Kon-Tiki

& Thor’s Mom: I don’t know what it is that drives you to do this.
Thor’s Dad: I hope you’ve learned a lesson... Can you promise that you never doing something so dangerous again? You promise? You promise?

& Liv Heyerdahl: You will make this island famous.
Thor Heyerdahl: It’s going to be just like with Darwin and the Galapagos. When people hear of Fatu Hiva they think of one thing: Thor Heyerdahl.

& Traveler books publisher: Rafts!.. Ha-ha. Now That would be an evidence. You and your theory to be accepted? You want to be right? Then go ahead, drift from Peru to Polynesia on a balsa wooden raft. Good luck.

& Thor: Gentlemen... Your magazine will accompany me on a raft at the mercy of the winds, all the way to Polynesia. It is further than from Chicago to Moscow. Here... to here. 5,000 miles.
Traveler magazine editor-1: You’ll have some engines on some case of emergency?
Thor: No. Absolutely not. We will surrender to the current and the wind. Like Tiki did.
Traveler magazine editor-2: And by undertaking this extraordinary voyage you’re proving...
Thor: That the oceans’re not barriers but roads. Not impediments, but pathways. I will prove that South Americans people sailed to Polynesia 1500 years ago.
Traveler magazine editor-3: Every schoolboy knows that Polynesia was settled from the east, not from South America!
Thor: And it is my job as a scientist to prove the schoolboys and those who quote them ’re wrong.

& Thor: Building in March, sailing in April, coming in August... And hope that hurricane season starts late.

Peter Freuchen: Frostbite, winter 1924... Taught me one thing: Do as the natives do, down to the smallest detail. Don’t use nails if they use ropes. Don’t use steel if they use bone. It took their ancestors 1000 years to learn. Go with them... And you just might hang on to your leg.

& Thor: Does it work? Shark repellent?
Navi quartermaster: That’s what we’re going to find out.

& Liv: Have a faith that things are going well, and everything will be okay.

& Thor: Believe that things are going well, and everything will be okay.
Erik Hesselberg: I have lots of faith. The problem is I also have a sextant!

& Erik: Why do you feed the sharks soup powder?
Bengt Danielsson: It is shark repellent.
    Erik: No, it’s tomato soup.
Knut Haugland: Where is the shark repellent?
Erik: I think we ate it.

& Thor: We have built a raft like Tiki did. And he came forward. And so do we. This is what we believe.
Herman Watzinger: Believe? This is not a religion, Thor. This is... frenzy*.
Thor: This is bigger than us.

& Thor: Tiki knew.
Herman: God, you understand nothing? There is no one else here except you who believes in Tiki!
Thor: No?.. Then what the hell are you doing here?!

& Thor: We have traveled over 5000 miles... Yet the greatest danger lies ahead.
    Herman: People?
Thor: No. Raroia reef. There is a wall around the whole island, with sharp coral.
Torstein Raaby: Why did not you say something earlier?
Thor: It was impossible to know exactly where we would end up.

& Herman: We could try to surf over.
    Knut: Surf?
Herman: Yes. Waves come in cycles of 13. Every 13th wave is substantially greater than the other. When we are close to the reef... we throw out an anchor, something heavy that can keep the raft in place.
    Knut: And so?
Herman: Then we count the waves. And just before the 13th wave... We cut the rope. Hopefully, surf over the reef... It can go.
    Thor: ..... I like it.

& Erik: Have you ever thought to bring jackets?
