A Young Doctor's Notebook and Other Stories 2×4

& Anna: Just like a sister to me.
Feldsher: Oh. More like a daughter.

& Bomgard Young: If there is a crumb of solace to be taken from this tragedy, it is the knowledge that there is nothing any of us, any of us, could have done.

& Feldsher: Bolsheviks, no more than 15 versts from here.
    Colonel: What are they doing?
Feldsher: Well, they want common ownership of the land and industry and end to the class system.
    Colonel: Not now.

& Bomgard Young: Stay here, you can have Pelageya’s papers, she’s dead. Pretend to be a midwife, or pretend to be my wife, or be my wife.

& Bomgard Young: Women, eh?
    Feldsher: I’m no expert.

& Feldsher: Doctor, a friend of mine is in mortal danger, a very dear friend of mine. He’s the only man I’ve ever... known to appreciate nuances of a good atlas. Or a perfectly delivered anecdote. A man who appreciates a pickled sprat and a walk in the glade. Although, obviously not at the same time.

& Feldsher: Come on doctor, only 40 versts to go.

& Bomgard Young: I’m an addict, I’m a hopeless addict. There’s nothing I can do. None of this is my fault. I can’t be the man you want me to be. I don’t want love, I don’t want forgiveness, I just want morphine.

& Bomgard Old: Sorry, I’m late.

& Companion in a car: You tried to touch my balls.
Bomgard Old: No, no. I had an idea for my opera, an aria. I could sing it for you, if you like.
Companion: I’d rather you touch my balls.

& Bomgard Young: I haven’t thought about morphine in three weeks and a day.
Bomgard Old: Hang on, are you counting the 14 days we lost since we joined the Gregorian calendar?
Bomgard Young: Well, yes! Who’s counting?

& Bomgard Young: You know, it’s just occur to me, that I have been a terrible host. Would you do me the honor of sleeping in my bed tonight?

& Bomgard Young: I won’t be in the room. I have patients to see. I just meant this is a comfortable bed. And the most important thing for me, is that you’re comfortable. Would you like me to leave while you undress?
Natasha: That would help, make me more comfortable.

& Bomgard Old: There are pages missing.
Companion in a car: I ate a lot of borsch.
    Bomgard Old: October, November...
    Companion: Bad borsch.
Bomgard Old: You wipe your ass with Christmas?

& Bomgard Young: What is the point of having your own hospital if all you can find is cocaine.

& Bomgard Old: It would be impolite to call on a spinster at this late hour. Specially with a giant cocaine erection.

& Feldsher: Ah yes, the flag. A humble piece of fabric, yet one that crystallizes an ideology. In this case, the deep red of the blood spilled in the fight for freedom. Captures everything the Bolshevik stand for... I must say, doctor, it shows tremendous courage to display this symbol with the White Guard moments from the door... Courage, but tempered with cunning.

& Anna: Yes, we have a door bell. Not animals.

& Anna: I’m sorry, and you are?
Natasha: Please, you can call me Natasha.
Anna: Of course you are. I’ll try to remember it.

& Natasha: Once again, thank you for your kindness. I haven’t felt such warmth, since... since I sit and watched the Bolsheviks burned down my childhood home.

& Anna: Of course, you are all most welcome here. But when you’re going?
Colonel: Oh, soon. Sooner we can get out of this fetid cesspit the better.
Anna: Well, if that’s your attitude you can take your poached chicken and you jelly...
Natasha: He means Russia, not this hospital.
    Colonel: Oh, yeah.

& Colonel: Excuse me, I...
Feldsher: Yes, that was a... unexpected discharge.

& Natasha: If I hadn’t suggested you join the White Guard, this would never have happened.
Bomgard Young: No, I have no regrets. I wanted to aid your cause.
Natasha: Then perhaps you should join the Bolsheviks.
Bomgard Young: How would that help? ... Right.

& Companion: Shut up.
Bomgard Old: But I have began my opera.
Companion: An opera... No wonder you hate yourself.

& Bomgard Young: Oh God, what on earth’s that smell? It’s worse than the dead!
Pelageya: I got it in Grabilovka.
Bomgard Young: Oh. I see... um... I didn’t realise they had a parfumerie.
Pelageya: They don’t. But the blacksmith there sells most of the ingredients.
Bomgard Young: Yes, I thought I detected... a subtle hint of... Was that peat?

& Bomgard Young: Are you alright?
Bomgard Old: No, I’m not. I’m better. Better than ’alright’. I’m amazing.
    Bomgard Young: Opium?
Bomgard Old: Air! It never runs out, and you never come down... Oh. That’s not air.

& Bomgard Young: Are you going to read me a bedtime story?
Bomgard Old: A man cannot run from his past...
Bomgard Young: That’s a boring story.

& Bomgard Old: I forgive you.

& Pelageya: I’d love to go to Moscow. Or anywhere. Even Omsk.
Bomgard Young: What for? We have everything we need right here. Even the Bolshoi.

& Bomgard Young: Alright, Feldsher, tell me what’s going on.
Feldsher: Oh, well... Since the fall of the Tsar, Mother Russia has been at war. With herself.
Bomgard Young: Yes, yes. I am aware of this stupid revolution, Feldsher.
    Bolshevik: Comrade... Doctor.
Bomgard Young: Stupid that it took so long for Russia to embrace the noble Bolshevik cause! We need to sort out the most seriously wounded.

& Bomgard Old: That portly individual out there is dying.
Bomgard Young: Yes, but he is a Bolshevik soldier.
Bomgard Old: What do you care about politics?
Bomgard Young: I don’t, but they do have a lot of guns.

& Bomgard Young: Is this going to take much longer? I mean... should I go and come by?
Pelageya: I can see the crown.
Bomgard Young: All right, let’s hurry thing along, shall we? ..... Was it... Was it supposed to look like that?
Pelageya: No... but then you’re not supposed to put forceps in the baby’s eye.

& Bomgard Young: Not now, feldsher.
Feldsher: But he took the quinine powder... that you prescribed.
    Bomgard Young: And?
Feldsher: All ten sachets of it.
Pelageya: I’ll get the stomach pump.
Feldsher: He thought he’d heal faster, you see? If he took all the medicine at once.

& Bomgard Young: She’s right. It was foolish of me, I don’t need to have a bath.
Feldsher: No, no. A bath was requested, a bath you shall have.

& Feldsher: Certainly is a big bath. It’s big enough for two men. Actually, doctor... you wouldn’t mind if I... went back to my room and left you to it?

& Young doctor: I’ve really just graduated. High school’s thirteen fives.
Bomgard Young: Stop saying that. It means nothing, out of there. And I got fifteen.
    Young doctor: Gosh.

& Young doctor: Can’t we do anything for her? ... I suppose not. Is she...
Bomgard Young: Not yet. She is... now.
Young doctor: Oh God, I feel...
    Bomgard Young: Releaved.
    Young doctor: ...sick.

& Bomgard Young: What is it? What do we stop for? Have we lost the road?
Yegorych: Road? What road? We’ve gone across fields for hours! Now we lost fields!

& Bomgard Young: It’s better?
Pelageya: It is worse. ... Doctor, let’s finish this in the morning.

A Young Doctor's Notebook 1×3

& Bomgard Young: Come on, it’s not that ridiculous, isn’t it, for a man to travel to Grachevka?
Pelageya: For a man, no. But you will freeze to death.

& Pelageya: You want to go to the shop?
Bomgard Young: Yes, but don’t tell me that’s ridiculous too to go to a shop.
Pelageya: Yes. The shop is closed.
Bomgard Young: What time does it open?
    Pelageya: August.

& Bomgard Young: I’m just... can’t quite decide what’s the best course of action to take. Gargle or... the drops.
Patient: Would the gargle work on my elbow?
Bomgard Young: You’re right. Good point. Drops it is.

& Pelageya: Is that the stomach pains, again?
Bomgard Young: No, no... I just... finished.
Pelageya: I see. I’m sure, if you do it again, this will be better.

& Bomgard Young: Her throat is blocked. How long she’s been like this?
    Lidka’s Mother: Five days.
Bomgard Young: Five days? Do you realize you almost certainly killed her? What you’ve been doing for five days? There’s nothing to do around here, for one day.

& Bomgard: They’ll strip you your medical degree, if you’ll let too many patients die on the operating table.
Bomgard Young: Really?.. No, I can’t do that... How many is too many?

& Bomgard Young: I’m in so much pain!
Bomgard: Then suffer! Because this, is far worse. It will take you... to a lush meadow with the high summer where you lie in the soft grass, and bask in the sun. And feel nothing but bliss. And you will never want to return to this frozen pisshole in the snow.
Bomgard Young: I have to get out of here!
Bomgard: It will never this good again.

& Bomgard Young: Come on, you have to see this to believe! It is truly remarkable.
Feldsher: My God, doctor... She is ugly.

& Bomgard Young: I thought the beard would help...
Pelageya: Yes. A beard would help.

& Bomgard: You’re in the middle of nowhere. No, you took a train in the middle of nowhere, and it took you another day to get here.

& Bomgard: You need to focus. You’re strong. But what did you have for breakfast?
    Bomgard Young: I don’t remember.
Bomgard: Well, we’ll soon find out!

& Pelageya: Mind the... lamp.

& Anna: In time... you will be the equal of a... young and inexperienced... Leopold Leopoldovich... and his is the name I do not mention lightly.

& NKVD Agent Kirill: The names... on the prescriptions, doctor. Leopold Leopoldovic, Demyan Lukich... Pelageya Ivanovnova. What do they have in common?
Bomgard: You obviously know the answer.
NKVD Agent Kirill: They are all deceased... And have been since before the dates on these prescriptions. Would you care to explain them?.. I know morphine is a powerful drug, but... surely cannot raise the dead.

A Young Doctor's Notebook 1×1

Based on The Short Stories by Mikhail Bulgakov!

& Bomgard: They say happiness is like good health. You don’t notice it until it’s gone.

& Bomgard: Yeah... I saw a lot of horror and tragedy in here. Happy days.

& Anna: This magnificent and extensive library...
Bomgard Young: It’s very impressive. I am certainly not going to be bored of an evening.
Feldsher: Oh, yes, we do have a lot of fun here. Only last month I heard a very amusing anecdote.

& Feldsher: Is it me... or does she have the most unusually shaped vagina?

& Bomgard Young: ’I kept the poor man’s tooth and jaw bone as a reminder of the day naive but promising young medical student became a doctor.’ Too boring. Too sentimental. Just stick to the facts.

Σ A pleasant one. Bulgakov plus Hamm plus Radcliffe. Yummy.
