Prisoners of War

Homeland 8×12

Saul: Tell him the chess he's playing is about to get three dimensional.
David: How so?
Saul: Russia's gonna jump in.

Charlotte: Red is reactant, clear is catalyst. Red goes in first, clear second. The resulting compound, Kolokol-1 behaves a lot like ketamine.
Carrie: The same K-1 used by your security forces during the Moscow theater hostage crisis?
Charlotte: That was aerosolized. This is in its gel form, meant to be absorbed through the skin.

Zabel: I always heard you were a man of principle. Now I'm starting to think you're just making shit up.

Saul: Fell on deaf ears. Zabel hears what he wants to hear, sees what he wants to see.

Carrie: I came back to try and stop a war.
Saul: Stop a war? How do you plan to do that, stop a war?
Carrie: Any way I can.

Carrie: A flying fuck of a difference that's gonna make.
Saul: It might.
Carrie: It won't.
Saul: Then we try something else.
Carrie: Or it's too late.
Saul: Sometimes, that's the cost of doing business.

Saul: I'm not exaggerating. She's the only significant live source we have left there. The rest were sent to the wall by Allison Carr.
Carrie: So we rebuild the network.
Saul: It would take a decade or more, and in the meantime we're blind to a mortal enemy who's slowly but surely strangling our democracy.

Carrie: Please, just see reason. No one person is worth the lives of tens of thousands. Hundreds of thousands.
Saul: She is.

Saul: Come here... Go fuck yourself.

Dorit: You're just like him. Always an ulterior motive.

Saul: ... in the end, who we trust in this life is all that matters.

Yevgeny: I did what I had to do. Cost of doing business.

Carrie: I don't know what it's like on your side, but it must be very... very lonely.

Yevgeny: Ramallah?
Carrie: Ramallah.
Yevgeny: I have people there who can smuggle you into Syria.

Carrie: Stay tuned.

The English Teacher

Homeland 8×11

Saul: You may not like it, but there are principles involved.
Zabel: What principles?
Saul: Proportionality—
Zabel: They killed our president. They killed our operatives.
Saul: And necessity.
Zabel: Here's the real question— what calamity has to occur before you finally admit it's time to do something?
Saul: Something, yes, not this, not a full-scale invasion of a nuclear power that has said they will not tolerate our crossing their border! How in the fucking world do you think that'll end?!

Saul: The thinking here has reached levels of crazy I couldn't have even imagined a year ago. Which improbable as it seems, leaves you and me on the same side, least I think we are.

Saul: Just give us a target, any target. Plausible coordinates, that's all I'm asking... You hear what I'm saying?

Saul: I'm not exactly sure what she did do or didn't do or what mistakes she made. There's always some. But everything she does, everything... is because she never loses sight of what's important. And honestly, she's the only person I've ever known I can say that of... So we're all here fiddling while Rome burns.

Saul: When you're dealing with Carrie, you have to do what she does. You have to decide for yourself what matters. You have to decide what kind of person you are.

Judge: ... Count five, accessory to murder of Ralph Warner, President of the United States. Count six, accessory to murder, Special Operator Number One, employed by the Central Intelligence Agency. Count seven, accessory to murder, Special Operator Number Two, employed by the Central Intelligence Agency. .... Count nine...

Jenna: I've tried to see it like you, but I just can't. I got into this thinking I would make things better. But I don't actually believe that anymore. All I see is damage.

Mike: Pakistan has convened a security council working group. They're demanding a vote against the US for last night's raid. China and Iran are backing Pakistan. Brits and Poles are backing us.
Saul: What are the Russians doing?
Mike: Usual, thinking of ways to fuck us up.

Andrei Kuznetsov: She was not in the class. She was a teacher in English.

Andrei Kuznetsov: This was our signal to meet. A book moved from the right to the left side of the bookstore window. A Tauchnitz edition in red leather. Very Saul, he liked the old ways, things hidden in plain sight.

Yevgeny: Kill Saul.

Designated Driver

Homeland 8×10

Carrie: Why didn't they call in, tell everyone what was happening?
Worley: It's aviate, navigate, communicate. They never got past step one.

Saul: Right now you're somewhere between a rogue agent and a national security threat. ... It's time to turn yourself in.

Carrie: All right, then you know what, you do something. Go to the Russians. Ask what they want to give it back.
Saul: Okay.
Carrie: Okay, what?
Saul: I'll talk to the Russians.

Carrie: I've dug this gigantic hole, and I-I can't-- I can't quite see a way out.

Saul: You have to ask Moscow.
Viktor: I did. At the very highest levels. You are, what do they say, uh, barking up the wrong tree.
Saul: Victor, I apologize. I need you to help me read between the lines here.

Saul: So either Yevgeny still has it--
Viktor: He doesn't.
Saul: Then your government does.
Viktor: Not true.
Saul: Either way, there must be a price. There must be.

Saul: This cannot be your answer. What did they say?
Viktor: Saul, I've done what I can.
Saul: In Moscow, what were their exact words?
Viktor: .... We have what we want.

Yevgeny: The identity of that agent is the only thing worth more to my country than watching the United States self-destruct on the Pakistan border.

Carrie: Please, I can do anything else. I can't betray Saul.
Yevgeny: From what I've seen, you can do just about anything.

Carrie: I found it, Saul. The truth.
Saul: I know. But the truth isn't much good if no one will listen.

Jenna: What is she doing?
Mike: Getting arrested.

Saul: I spoke to Ambassador Makarov.
David: Yeah, and what did he say?
Saul: Officially, they don't have it. Unofficially, they're not giving it back.

Saul: Whatever shit she's in is because of me. I am not turning my back on her.

In Full Flight

Homeland 8×9

Mike: With respect, you'll have to take that up with the White House.
Saul: Oh, you can fucking count on it.

Yevgeny: You don't think Jalal Haqqani shot down that helicopter, do you?
Carrie: No.
Yevgeny: Who then?
Carrie: What if nobody did?

Saul: With respect, sir. Afghanistan is the opposite of simple.

Saul: It's madness.
David: Welcome to my world.
Saul: It's worse than madness. A week ago, we were on the verge of a comprehensive peace deal.
Ω You say.

Jalal: No.
Tasneem: No?
Jalal: You think you control us. But you have that backwards.

Jalal: Spare me your empty threats, and I will spare you an army of martyrs on your streets.

Yevgeny: Relax... Everything's taken care of.
Carrie: Easy for you to say. You're not the one selling out your own people.
Yevgeny: Nobody's selling out anybody. You're just buying some time, and you're doing it for all the right reasons.

Yevgeny: Fucking helicopters.

Yevgeny: Why would I do that?
Carrie: I don't know. Maybe because you're a good guy after all.
Yevgeny: Am I?
Carrie: You definitely have a good side.

Carrie: I'm not saying I'll betray my country, I won't, but in between the black and white, there is a lot of gray. A lot.

Carrie: Aren't you sick of it? The bad bosses, the even worse leaders, both our countries in the toilet. I don't know, maybe— maybe it is too late, maybe we're too brainwashed by our own sides, but... don't we know better? Couldn't-couldn't we do better?.. What?
Yevgeny: Our own private network, huh? Wouldn't that be nice?
Carrie: Is it so far-fetched? We're halfway there already.

Carrie: Not here. Islamabad first.

Threnody(s)

Homeland 8×8

President Hayes: What are the odds?.... You must have thought about that already. What are the odds?
Scott Ryan: Candidly, sir, at best 50/50.
President Hayes: .... Fifty-fifty?!
John Zabel: It's not terrible...
President Hayes: The United States versus a dozen punks, yeah, it is. Bin Laden himself was 80 percent!

John Zabel: Sir, I wonder if we're looking at this all wrong. ... I mean, a return to first principles. The United States does not negotiate with terrorists. Period.

John Zabel: Frankly, sir, who is this Max Piotrowski anyway?

John Zabel: A failed rescue can sink a presidency.
President Hayes: Yeah, Jimmy Carter.
John Zabel: Exactly. And as for upside, I'm sorry but... some guy named Max is not the same as Osama Bin Laden.

Carrie: Well, Max would do anything for me. Absolutely anything. Wherever I'd go, he'd... he'd end up there by my side. And .... I took him for granted. I... used him... all these years and... and now he's dead... I'm so sorry, Max. I'm so sorry...

David Wellington: You are pushing us into a war we don't want and can't win.
John Zabel: You know what your problem is, David? You don't believe America can win any war.

Carrie: I can't stay out here forever.
Yevgeny Gromov: Why not?

F**ker Shot Me

Homeland 8×7

Haqqani: So I get my wish... To travel the streets of Kabul one more time without hiding.

G'ulom: What has changed? Not the Taliban. Not America. Still not understanding anything about us even after all these years.

Yevgeny Gromov: You want to use my contacts, right? Where do you think they come from, huh? It's places like this. Every time America comes in and bombs a bunch of civilians, it's an opportunity for us. We come in, we rebuild the mosque, we help people get their lives back together. We make friends. That's how it works.

Saul: When those helicopters went down, two things changed in my country. An inexperienced president came to power. The American people were wounded, demanding action. We know what happens next. We've been here before... How does a weak president show he's strong? He goes to war.

President Hayes: We've been giving them war for 18 years.
President G'ulom: Bullshit. You didn't fight for 18 years. You fought for eight weeks. You invaded Afghanistan with 12 men and airpower, bombed the Taliban to shit, and in days they were lining up to surrender. They were making deals, shaving their beards. You'd won. Then you gave up and left for Iraq...

Haqqani: Forty years of war, no one is innocent.

Two Minutes

Homeland 8×6

President Hayes: In the words of Lyndon Baines Johnson, "All I have I would have given gladly not to be standing here today..."

President Hayes: I just pledged the hand of justice, Old Testament style, to the whole damn country. Now, somebody in there better come up with something for me to do and quickly.

Saul: People change, they evolve.
G'ulom: Do they?

G'ulom: Do you know the sound a woman makes when her hand is removed from her arm with a hacksaw?.. It can be heard even over the cheers of 5,000 Taliban.

G'ulom: You'll see yourselves out.

Mike Dunne: It was Carrie's idea for the President to come here. She pitched the visit.

G'ulom: To this enemy, appeasement is a sign of weakness, and it is met with aggression. They murdered the leader of the free world. It is the victory of a lifetime... Can you imagine the consequences if our answer is due process?... We must respond in a language they understand.

David Wellington: Scott, the war crime's not the half of it. We just lost control of the whole policy. Hayes reversed course based on the counsel of Abdul fucking G'ulom.

Chalk Two Down

Homeland 8×5

Hayes: Graveyard of empires... Thugs with third-grade educations and automatic weapons... we try and make peace with them. How shocked can we be when they kill our president?

Carrie: The peace deal was your baby, Saul. Whatever you say now, expect to get your head cut off.

Saul: We've been through this before after 9/11. We did everything wrong.

Charlie Echo Four: Nothing. No pulse. The President's dead.

Saul: It's important we coordinate our response. Division will look like weakness.
G'ulom: Right...

Saul: I believe you. No one else will.

David Wellington: You need. To make. A decision.

President Hayes: General. Calling to confirm.
General Owens: Confirm what, sir?
President Hayes: Do it.
General Owens: I need you to be specific, sir.
President Hayes: Bomb it. Bomb the damn site.

President Hayes: Wha... you want me to watch? What's that gonna look like?
David Wellington: Like you can make a tough decision and see it through.

Saul: What happened is that no one is listening to me.

G'ulom: This is my country and now my presidency. I'll say what I want.

G'ulom: The first duty of any President is the safety of his citizens...

Chalk One Up

Homeland 8×4

Tasneem Qureshi: They've reached an agreement, haven't they... the Americans? Without input from you or me, but they expect us to stand here and applaud the result.

Tasneem Qureshi: My prime minister got a call last night from the president of the United States, no less, threatening economic and travel sanctions if Pakistan doesn't get on board.
Abdul Qadir G'ulom: On board with what, exactly?

Carrie: I don't know what to say.
President Warner: You don't have to say anything. I'm just glad you're here to witness this thing that you helped set in motion, this ending of a war, the longest in our history. Kind of amazing.

President Warner: Before I left Washington, I had a phone call, a long phone call with Taliban leader Haissam Haqqani, and we spoke about how we can bring peace to this beautiful country. We have our differences still, but we agreed on two fundamental things: no terrorist group will ever find refuge in this country again, and the people of Afghanistan will be free to live the lives they all wanna live... man, woman, and child.

VP Ben Hayes: Jesus, I'm weeping all over my shoes. Look at him, grandpa in a flak jacket. It's all about winning a second term, isn't it?
David Wellington: It's about ending the war.

Abdul Qadir G'ulom: Our allies the Americans have treated us with their usual courtesy...

Abdul Qadir G'ulom: I thought you controlled Haqqani...
Tasneem Qureshi: I thought you controlled Kabul.

Saul: Holy fuck. Two presidents...

Carrie: Return to base immediately.

False Friends

Homeland 8×3

Tasneem Qureshi: Your time will come, Jalal. Until then, you need to be your father's son...

Max: How many times do I have to tell you? I'm not your fucking Buddha!

Carrie: Don't assume.

Carrie: For all I know... he's staging this whole event just to throw more shade on me and do what he does best... spread rumor and innuendo, divide us against ourselves.
Jenna: Why even agree to meet with him, then?
Carrie: 'Cause I could be wrong. He could just as easily be the genuine article.
Jenna: How you gonna know which it is?
Carrie: That's the thing... you never really do. Not a 100%, anyway.

Haqqani: There are many who would take my place.
Saul: None who have the power or influence to end the war.
Haqqani: You overstate my standing.
Saul: Is that why they call you "the Arrow of God"?
Haqqani: I'm... just a man.
Saul: Then you are a man like Faisal was to the Saudis, Kemal to the Turks.

Jalal: We will outlast them, Father! We will outlast them.
Haqqani: No. No. We are just strong enough never to lose and just weak enough never to win.

Yevgeny Gromov: I saved your life... for one thing.

Abdul Qadir G'ulom: The Carrie Mathison I knew... would never come in here... making demands... not without a gift or a gun to the head... What happened to you?

Saul: ...because you and I know that it's only the men with guns who can make peace.

Samira Noori: You know how you could help me? You know how you could help us, you Americans?.. Go. Get out of our country. Stop helping. Leave us alone!

Tasneem Qureshi: ...what happened between you?
Aba Qureshi: 9/11 happened, then America's crusade against the Muslim world.

Aba Qureshi: The Americans despise our god. They despise our prophet. They despise... us for the very attempt that we are trying to put this country on a self-reliant, independent path... Go as far as you must.

Carrie: So here's the deal. The United States will give you two hours...

Abdul Qadir G'ulom: This peace of yours... Do you really think the Taliban will keep any agreement? They wait till you draw down your forces while they gather theirs in the villages and in the mountains, and then it will be Saigon all over again... your embassy under siege, helicopters taking off from the roof, every fool who ever worked for you massacred in the street.

Deception Indicated

Homeland 8×1

Jim Turrow: You were detained in Russia for 213 days?

Jim Turrow: Did they tell you you failed your polygraph? Deception indicated.

Jim Turrow: Have you ever conspired with a foreign intelligence officer or service?
Carrie: Wh... so... so what does that mean? Are... are you accusing me of something? Could mean a lot of things: giving up sources and methods, working for the enemy...
Jim Turrow: You tell me.

Jim Turrow: Ms. Mathison, how can you be so sure if there's 180 days of your life you don't remember?

Carrie: You need an alpha to deal with an alpha.

Jenna Bragg: Foreign workers are definitely a target, but isn't this exactly what I was trained for?
Carrie: .... Insist, then.
Jenna Bragg: Excuse me?
Carrie: You're in a hard place, trying to do hard things. Don't whine and don't take no for an answer.

Agha Jan: Don't lecture me about peace in the region. You abandoned the region after the Soviets were sent packing. Then 9/11 happened and you're back. We've all seen this movie. We know how it ends... in chaos and civil war on our border.
Saul: That's exactly what we're trying to avoid.
Agha Jan: How? By announcing timetables and benchmarks? By unilaterally drawing down your combat troop levels to zero? The Afghan state you've built is a house of cards, its army a joke.

Agha Jan: You want real resolution, then show some real resolve. At least make the Taliban think you aren't running for the exits.
Saul: Policy's the policy. No way that is changing now.
Agha Jan: Then peace isn't what you want. You just want out.

Carrie: About Russian cooperation with the Taliban... How real is it?
Mike Dunne: Real enough.
Carrie: What does that look like, exactly? Military aid, advisors?
Mike Dunne: Both.
Carrie: What about intelligence? Are they sharing intelligence?
Mike Dunne: You bet, anything to piss us off. It's what the Kremlin lives for.

Carrie: You know you're not going in there with me, right? I'm sure you're smart enough to realize the Vice President's not opening up with some female in the room he's never met before.

Paean to the People

Homeland 7×12

Carrie: I agreed with Saul. If things go wrong, this is the plan.
Anson: What, to allow them to fucking catch you?
Carrie: No, to buy time for what really matters, which is not me, it's Simone.

Simone: Carrie Mathison. Your favorite. What's happening with her?
Saul: Don't worry about it.

President Warner: And you, Senator... you can get the fuck out of my White House.

Sen. Eames: Ms. Martin, what was your most recent operation?
Simone: I was part of a team sent here to disrupt the American political system.
Sen. Eames: How?
Simone: By any means necessary.

Carrie: People will know the statement was coerced. No one will believe it.
Gromov: They don't have to. As long as the seed of doubt is planted, that's all I need-- something to water and let grow.

Gromov: It will be months, Carrie... Maybe longer.

President Keane: Is it the same oath I swore a hundred days ago?
Chief Justice: Yes, ma'am.
President Keane: Then I'm pretty sure I got it down... I do solemnly swear that I shall faithfully execute the office of the President of the United States and will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.

VP Warner: In this town, it's never a bad time to try a new way of doing things. Otherwise, it's just Democrats and Republicans, Republicans and Democrats, whipsawing the country to death.

David: Sooner or later, someone's gonna have to stop this vicious cycle of partisan advantage and start exercising some restraint when in power.
President Keane: Does it have to be me?

Aleksandr: Dinner. Cauliflower and carrot stroganoff. It is not horrible.

President Keane: Trust me, David. I got this.

President Keane: Look around. We're in trouble. Our democracy is. And it is not Russia's fault. It is ours. We are the ones killing it. When we think of democracies dying, we think of revolutions, of military coup d'etats, of armed men in the street. But that's less and less how it happens anymore. Turkey, Poland, Hungary, Nicaragua, the Philippines... democracies now die when we're not looking, when we're not paying attention. And the end rarely comes in an instant, but arrives slowly, like twilight. And at first, our eyes don't notice...

President Keane: ...I don't pretend to have all the answers, but I do know I have become part of the problem. I open my mouth, and half of you hear only lies...

President Keane: No single leader can save a democracy, but without a leader you can trust, no democracy can be saved.

Saul: Not yet. Wanna see her first with my own eyes.

All In

Homeland 7×11

Dar Adal: Carrie and three of her buddies from the Middle East? It's not a diplomatic mission. It's a covert operation.

Dar Adal: He went to Russia. Look for Russian experts. You'll find there aren't that many.

Jim: What's the old Soviet saying? "We pretend to work, you pretend to pay us"?

Senator Paley: Fucking Keane and her fucking Russians... Worst part is, she told me. She told me not only that it was Russians, but that they were using me to get to her.

Senator Paley: You want me to rat out our own guys?
Janet: No, I want you to finish what we started and remove a President so despised, her own Cabinet lined up to get rid of her. Were we wrong about some facts? Apparently. But we were not wrong about her.

Gromov: Fake.
Saul: We respectfully disagree.
Gromov: Everything you think you know is fake, built on fallacy.

Carrie: We're not here to talk about the last 30 years.
Gromov: I am.

VP Warner: Madam President, I am here to relieve you of your command.

Sandy: This SVR guy, Yakushin. He's the one you can get to. He's old school. He wants America to be stable. It's where he hides all the money he steals. Drives him crazy, Yevgeny going around stirring up trouble.

Saul: Give me Simone Martin, you get your money back. Or swear to God, this is only the start.

Max: What do you think?
Carrie: 30 men loaded for bear less than an hour after Saul squeezed Yakushin's balls?...

Clarity

Homeland 7×10

VP Warner: Must gall her... that the survival of her Presidency could come down to me.

Saul: It's always a love story with you.

Sandy: Simone's thesis advisor at the time has a vivid memory of her boyfriend-- tall, dark, and Russian.

Jim: Is the President really that vulnerable?
Saul: Yeah, she is. If we don't produce some hard evidence that screams Russia, and soon, I don't see her making it to the end of the year, much less the end of her term.

Carrie: That's not about days or weeks, Saul. This is about the rest of my life.

David: Is this even legal?
Olivia: It's unprecedented, but the law's clear. The President can dismiss Cabinet members at any time for any reason.

David: The Russians! You are giving them the very Constitutional crisis they've been trying to instigate for months.

President Keane: I did not bust my ass to get elected! I did not survive an assassination attempt just to fold up my tent and go home. Send 'em.

Maggie: You were always so fearless, my God. I hated you for that. Why was I scared all the time?

Maggie: I am not... extraordinary like you, Carrie. I don't run CIA stations in Afghanistan or disrupt terrorist plots in Berlin. I don't advise the President of the United States. My job doesn't require me to risk my life. I'm not a hero. But as it turns out, safe has its advantages, too. A family... A stable home life...

Maggie: In six weeks, the ECT will wear off, and Saul will come knocking with some new crisis, and the whole crazy orchestra will start playing again.

Carrie: Quick. Before I change my mind.

President Keane: Well, if he's carrying an olive branch, tell him he's a day late and a dollar short.

VP Warner: Power without authority is tyranny. That's the line I'm trying to keep you from crossing.

VP Warner: Then you leave me no choice but to deliver to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House a document declaring you unfit for the Office of the Presidency.

VP Warner: It doesn't have to be such a snake pit, Elizabeth-- the world. It really doesn't.

Carrie: Is it too late?
Saul: For?
Carrie: Me to join? I think I could be useful.
Saul: Fucking kidding? Can you be ready in four hours?
Carrie: If I hustle.

Franny: Are you coming back?
Carrie: Of course I'm coming back. I'm going to work, and I always come back when my work's over, don't I?... I always come back.

Carrie: ...he told me there's a burn code for emergencies, delivered as a tweet. And when you get it, you don't just go to ground, you torch your entire part of the operation.

Saul: You think we can launch it?
Carrie: I don't know. You tell me. It means breaking into the Twitter server, which may or may not be feasible. Never mind the legal issues.
Saul: I'll look into that end...

President Keane: What's the catch?
Saul: It'll require some NSA intervention and an American media company. Probably best undertaken without their knowledge.
President Keane: Say what you mean, Saul.
Saul: Electronic breaking and entering on US citizens. If you consider us under attack, you're at liberty to authorize it.
President Keane: But?
Saul: But if it ever leaks, you look like you're playing fast and loose with the Constitution.
President Keane: You notice the longer this goes on, the more I become the leader my enemies say that I am...

Senator Paley: The Russians?
Saul: Yes, sir.
Senator Paley: Yeah, give me a fucking break.

Senator Paley: For Christ's sake. You gonna tell me Castro was in on this, too?

Saul: So far, he's confirmed a devastating account of Russian interference in our Democratic process, including feeding you and your committee a steady diet of manipulated information designed to bring down the President of the United States.

Senator Paley: What's "UI"? It says it next to my name.
Saul: Those are categories used by the GRU. "T" for target, "RA" for recruited asset, "UI" for...
Senator Paley: What?

President Keane: I don't want your resignation. He's counting on that, wearing us down so at some point, we'll do anything just to make it stop.

Wellington: I can't read between the lines on this, Elizabeth. You're gonna have to tell me yes or no.

President Keane: Tell them in terms they understand. No more.

Viktor: That woman on the video yelling at you, screaming up a storm. All of them are crazier than usual these days.

Viktor: You can't be serious!
Wellington: I understand, Viktor, that you have to say that. Nonetheless, please tell Moscow that if Simone Martin lies--

Viktor: We are not responsible for that woman. If you cannot handle her, I don't know what you expect me to do.
Wellington: Well, the Sixth Directorate will know... Pass the message to Moscow.

Carrie: The problem isn't that you don't love your country. It's that your country doesn't love you back.

Carrie: Okay. There is something going on--
Maggie: There's always something going on.
Carrie: No, I mean the country is under attack right now!

Carrie: I have an idea about what to do next.
Saul: Carrie, he asked for a lawyer.
Carrie: I know. Let's give him one.

Andante

Homeland 7×7

Saul: I really think you'll want to sit down.

Wellington: I've been involved with a Russian agent?
Saul: Almost certainly.

Clint: Who's that?
Saul: Max.
Clint: What-- what's-- what's his skill set?
Saul: Irritant.

Audrey: You know what really bugged him? The sheer unfairness of it all. 'Cause at the same time he's over there, trying to bring some sanity to the situation, there's this woman, this CIA station chief, who was completely off the rails. Right around the time he's sent home from Kabul, total pariah, this crazy lady drops a drone on a wedding party, killing 40 people. And you know what she gets? A promotion...

Clint: Her charity, the International Democracy Foundation? It's a Russian front.

Judge: Your problem? It's called politics, which is why it's such a goddamn mess. It's also why I have no intention of intervening, and nobody else in this building would either.

President Keane: They're trying to destroy me.
Saul: All respect, Ma'am, they're trying to destroy the country. Used to be from St. Petersburg and Moscow. Now it's from Pennsylvania Avenue, three blocks from the White House.

Species Jump

Homeland 7×6

Carrie: Anything?
Max: He's out of yogurt.

Sandy: And then something happened that blew our collective minds. October 4, 1957-- can anybody tell me what that was?... I'll give you a hint. America's strategic bomber force was suddenly deemed vulnerable, sitting ducks on the ground. Anybody?.....
Saul: Sputnik.

Sandy: No one's gonna understand how we fucked up terrorism if they don't understand that we fucked up the Cold War.

Sandy: Why should I?
Saul: Anybody else would be my second choice.

Saul: You understand the position this puts me in?
Carrie: Yes, I do! In a position to save the President and possibly the republic.

Carrie: A breath? Are you kidding?! Jesus Christ. ...the truth is ringing in my fucking ears!

Saul: I know how this goes. I'm CEO of that club. You have to calm down now, pretend we never had this conversation.

Saul: ... A Russian intelligence operation involving active measures against the President of the United States.

Saul: How does it get from tapas bar spat to national network news in an hour?
Clint: Well, that's the end of the journey. The species jump.

Clint: Really, we should start here.
Saul: What's that?
Clint: Well, that's a node, an identity.
Saul: What's it do?
Clint: Well, that's the tweet with the frame grab and the caption. I mean, that's-- that's the meme. All right, so these are the nodes that respond. They're actually mostly automated accounts. They light up red when they retweet messages, which they do sporadically over time so that it looks natural.
Saul: What about the green ones?
Clint: Yeah, no, those are real people, those are verified accounts. So, like, like a real person might send a meme to a friend or two or ten or maybe everyone they know. In epidemiology, that's called a replication rate. And every meme has one.
Saul: So that's the real people passing it on.
Clint: Mm-hmm. Each green node represents a thousand people... So that-- that's what it looks like on a national scale.

Active Measures

Homeland 7×5

Saul: I'm talking about information warfare.

Saul: The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking Russia. ... It's what they do, David-- exploit existing divisions wherever they find them.

President Keane: God knows I never thought my presidency would be about telling another woman to bite her tongue and turn the other cheek-- any woman, never mind... But here we are.

Saul: Talk to me about Slovyansk. 2014.
Ivan: What about it?
Saul: Russian state TV reports Ukrainian soldiers crucified a boy in the town square.

Saul: Fake death of one boy stirred up enough anti-Ukrainian sentiment in Russia to justify an invasion. Fake death of the other sparked a massacre that might topple the presidency.

Dante: Nobody grows up dreaming of taking down criminals inside their own government.

Ivan: Indians were trying to communicate with your explorers. Showed them the river, made like this with the hand... Your people thought it meant "snakes."
Saul: What'd it mean?
Ivan: Fish... Sometimes, a domestic crisis is just a domestic crisis.

Saul: As far as he's concerned, I still think he's the happy defector going about his happy life. Who knows? Maybe he is.

Carrie: All right, motherfuckers, we're back in business.

President Keane: I don't think the message has ever been clearer. We cannot allow what divides us as individuals to continue to undermine what unites us as a people, what brings us together as Americans.

Carrie: I don't know. I mean, two bugs crap out on one mission?
Dante: ... That kind of shit happens all the time.
Carrie: Not to me, it doesn't.

Carrie: What the fuck?!
