Now Am Found

True Detective 3×8

Amelia: "What will become of you and me...
besides the photo and the memory?
This is the school in which we learn.
That time is the fire in which we burn.
What is the self amidst this blaze?
What am I now that I was then,
which I shall suffer and act again?
The children shouting are bright as they run.
This is the school in which they learn.
What am I now that I was then?
May memory restore again and again...
the smallest color of the smallest day.
Time is the school in which we learn.
Time is the fire in which we burn."

Edward Hoyt: Family. That's what it's... We only had the one.

Hays: Suppose somebody catches us?
West: We're old and confused.

Hays: It's always too late... whatever we do.

West: You don't wanna live with it... fuckin' don't.

West: Do you feel like any kinda closure?
Hays: I don't.
West: Me neither.

Amelia: What if there's another story? What if something went unbroken? All this life, all this loss, what if it was really one long story that just kept going and going until it healed itself? Wouldn't that be a story worth telling? Wouldn't that be a story worth hearing?...

Wayne: I'm sorry for what I said to you. I-I haven't been myself.

Amelia: Let's get you home. You can think about how you're gonna propose. I can think about if I'm gonna accept.

The Final Country

True Detective 3×7

Elisa: It's like 1980, isn't it? A sudden act of violence, a dead man, and the case is closed.

Roland: What do you aim to do?
Tom Purcell: Whatever it takes to stop feelin'. I mean, there's no point. Ain't nobody left to feel anything for.

Wayne: Fuck 'em. They don't wanna do it right, it's not a job worth havin'.

Amelia: Thought you were just gonna do your half...
Wayne: Me and my goddamn work ethic.

Elisa: In 2012, two former Louisiana state police stopped a serial killer associated with some kind of pedophile ring. Despite evidence of accomplices, the case never went wider.

Hays: Bein' police... there's no certainty. Lot of the time, there's no clarity at all. You just do your best, and... learn to live with ambiguity.

Hays: Watts. Don't forget, 'cause I will.

Lieutenant West: No. We can't.

Roland: You manipulative, egotistical, uppity fuckin'...
Wayne: What? Huh? What you gonna say?
Roland: Guess what word's runnin' through my mind right now.
Wayne: Say it, then. Say it, motherfucker.

Wayne: Helluva day when a gunfight's the second most excitin' thing that happens to you.

Wayne: One thing I learned, the war? Life happens now. Then later's now, y'know? It's never behind you.

Wayne: I'm not avoidin' the question, just... really don't spend time rememberin' stuff.
Amelia: That's like a superpower to me. I can't even understand that. How do you do it?
Wayne: Hmm. Just lucky, I guess.

Hays: You know... it's terrible what this work makes you ponder. Don't you think?

Hays: I wouldn't know, Miss. But what you just did is called speculation. That leads to projection, we call it. Twists what you see, obfuscates truth.

Elisa: Doesn't the simple body count point toward something bigger...

I'm gonna tell you, when I was his age, age he was in the room with us, I was in the fuckin' jungle... I made the kid skip college?... I think that whole generation's a bunch of pussies.

Amelia: Stop pretending that you're too dumb to know that you're full of shit.

Rebecca: Mom? Dad? What do "we do not"?
— ... We do not say goodnight without "I love you's." I love you.

Detective Hays: Oh, come on, man. It's too big for that political bullshit.
Lieutenant West: It ain't bullshit to the Man. You ever learned that, you wouldn't've been on a desk last ten years.

West: Them eggs are fierce, huh? You show a woman you got good kitchen skills... they know you ain't lookin' for a cook.

West: Well... you don't talk to somebody for 24 years, you're gonna miss some shit.

West: How you gonna talk to these people... we done what we done? You don't know what you might say. Or might remember.
Hays: If I remember what we done, I'll remember not to say.

Hays: Roland. I don't remember. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, but I just can't remember. I don't... I... I, uh, I can't... Can't remember my life, man. I can't remember my wife... I-I don't know. If you tell me I... I did something wrong, well, okay. I'm sorry.

Hays: She still be out there. ..... And before I'm a... droolin' fuckin' squash plant, and with whatever brains I got left, I'm gonna finish this.

Hays: Come on. Stir some shit up with me.

West: How is it your son don't have you locked up?
Hays: He don't know how fucked up I am.

The Hour and the Day

True Detective 3×6

Detective West: I don't like him. Man signs up to go without fuckin' for life... Either he don't know himself for a liar, or he's some tight, limited edition psycho, you know?

Detective Hays: My feeling... it was all about the girl.

Detective Hays: Nothing 'bout his face besides the eye? Handsome, ugly?..
Patty Faber: Well, like I say, uh, he was black.

Wayne: You got some major cognitive dissonance.

Heather: I don't think bad of you. What I was saying... I didn't mean that.
Wayne: Me neither.

Detective West: And no, I could give a fuck what color he was.
Detective Hays: Sure about that?
Detective West: Fact these were black folks probably gave me more pause. Mob of white people surrounds me, smashes up my ride... be a lot less hesitation what I'd do.

Detective Hays: Can we say this was anonymous vandals?
Detective West: We're not goin' with "irate Negros"?

Hays: I'm not talkin' about the show. It's me. It's my life. Tell myself the story, I tell the case in steps, and I'm rememberin'. Rememberin' my life.

Detective West: God is love, brother... God is love.

Lieutenant West: He's not wrong. May not be right, but he's not wrong.

Elisa: Are you trying to work this?
Hays: I wanna know the whole story.

Elisa: Are you sure you're not trying to investigate this again?
Hays: That'd be a job for somebody who knows where he is most of the time...

Detective West: Would you folks be alright if we started going back through some of their things? We're afraid now... we might've overlooked something.
Lucy Purcell: What?
Detective West: We just don't know, ma'am.

Hays: Where the hell's the charcoal?.. Stores aren't supposed to be this big...

Heather: You tracked men in the war?
Hays: I did... Did you march?
Heather: I did.
Hays: Funny how the protests stopped once the draft ended...

Hays: He says you call the story "Time", but you can't say its name. Why's that?
Heather: I guess because... we're in time, and of time, but to name... You separate yourself from something when you name it. And I think he means, we can't be separated from time.

Heather: Oh, sweetheart... Did you think you could just go on, and never once have to look back?

Brett Woodard: So why? Why punch in? Why the suit? Why...
Detective Hays: I don't ask myself questions like that... Could be I'm too chickenshit, Mr. Woodard.

Brett Woodard: I miss when "Don't get killed" was the only thing on my to-do list.
Detective Hays: It's hard to unplug from that.

Detective West: You like kids, generally?
Brett Woodard: Do... What the fuck's the right answer to that?

Hays: I spent two years in the jungle, a lot of it I was alone. I hunt a lot now. Alone.
Amelia: I'm a vegetarian.

Jim Dobkins: Let's get through this first. Could you tell us about November 7th, 1980? Your timeline of events.
Detective Hays: Sure.

Detective West: It's more honest than most relationships. You never bought no Saigon trim while you was over there?
Detective Hays: Guess I'm a romantic...
Detective West: I'm a feminist. They want to sell me a piece of ass, they got the right... Shit. You're gonna pay for it one way or another.

Jim Dobkins: Never occurred to you he might be lyin'?
Detective Hays: 'Course it did. General rule is, everybody's lyin'. Period.

Hays: I used to think back then... it was before 'Nam and after 'Nam. But more it's... before the Purcell case and after. And it keeps comin' back...

Amelia: I hear something now and then... They're all poor around here. That's the main thing.

Detective West: Think they're lyin'? I mean, they're lyin', but... think it's just regular teenage lyin', or somethin' else?

Detective West: He's got his own thing... Man was a LRRP in 'Nam. You know what that is? Long range reconnaissance. Drop 'em in the jungle alone, come out two or three weeks later with scalps... He's like a pathfinder. Tracks wild boar for fun.

Detective Hays: We have to find her.

& Joel Theriot: All my life, I wanted to be nearer to God. But the only nearness... silence.

& Rust: You should sign that... The newspapers are gonna be tough on you... and prison is very... very hard on people who hurt kids. If you get the opportunity, you should kill yourself.

& Rust: I am working. I have things to do. So type the report, man. That’s how we do. I get people to talk, you write the stats. It’s worked out well for you so far.
Marty: I’m the only one ever took up for you! Ever! You know what it’s likebeing your partner, huh? Fuck you.
Rust: No, buddy, without me... there is no you. So type the fuckin’ report, man.

& Maggie: You can’t live like this.
Rust: You know, people that give me advice, I reckon they’re talking to themselves.

& Rust: Buy you a beer?
    Marty: Sure. I’ll follow you.
Rust: .... Actually, why don’t you buy me a beer?

The Secret Fate of All Life

True Detective 1×5

& Dewall: I ain’t go no use for it or your money.
    Rust: What, money don’t spend?
Dewall: I can see your soul at the edges of your eyes. It’s corrosive, like acid. You got a demon, little man, and I don’t like your face. It makes me want to do things to it.

& Rust: Look. You want my help? Just show me the rest of the file.
Det. Papania: Why are you so hot to see the new discovery file, man?
Rust: Well, why are y’all... so hot to not give it to me? It’s supposed to be like a consultation, right?

& Ledoux: The black stars rise...

& Ledoux: I saw you in my dream. You’re in Carcosa now with me. He sees you. You’ll do this again. Time is a flat circle.
Rust: Listen, Nietzsche. Shut the fuck up.

& Rust: I can say that I walked away from the experience with a greater respect for the sanctity of human life.

& Rust: Why should I live in history, huh? Fuck, I don’t want to know anything anymore. This is a world where nothing is solved. Someone once told me, “Time is a flat circle.” Everything we’ve ever done or will do we’re gonna do over and over and over again... and that little boy and that little girl, they’re gonna be in that room again... and again... and again... forever.

& Rust: Look. Everybody knows there’s something wrong with them. They just don’t know what it is. Everybody wants confession. Everybody wants some cathartic narrative for it, the guilty especially... Oh, but everybody is guilty.

& Marty: You know the good years when you’re in them, or you just wait for them until you get ass cancer and realize that the good years came and went? Because there’s a feeling— you might notice it sometimes— this feeling like life has slipped through your fingers... like the future is behind you, like it’s always been behind you.

& Marty: Solution to my whole life was right under my nose— that woman, those kids— and I was watching everything else. See, infidelity is one kind of sin, but my true failure was inattention.

& Det. Gilbough: Tell us what you know about his girl... You know what happened there between them?
Marty: What always happens between men and women? Reality.

& Marty: ...in states of undress, you know... like fucking.

& Rust: You ever heard of something called the M-brane theory, detectives?.. It’s like in this universe, we process time linearly forward... but outside of our spacetime, from what would be a fourth-dimensional perspective, time wouldn’t exist, and from that vantage, could we attain it... we’d see... our spacetime would look flattened, like a single sculpture with matter in a superposition of every place it ever occupied, our sentience just cycling through our lives like carts on a track. See, everything outside our dimension... that’s eternity, eternity looking down on us. Now, to us, it’s a sphere, but to them... it’s a circle.

& Rust: In eternity, where there is no time, nothing can grow. Nothing can become. Nothing changes. So death created time to grow the things that it would kill... and you are reborn but into the same life that you’ve always been born into.
I mean, how many times have we had this conversation, detectives? Well, who knows? When you can’t remember your lives, you can’t change your lives, and that is the terrible and the secret fate of all life.
You’re trapped... by that nightmare you keep waking up into.
