A Kiss Before Dying

& Bud Corliss: It’s not right.
    Dorothy Kingship: What?
Bud Corliss: For anyone to love somebody as much as I love you.
Dorothy Kingship: That makes us even.
Bud Corliss: Then we haven’t got anything to worry about.

& Dorothy Kingship: It’s exciting, isn’t it?

& Dorothy Kingship: You don’t want to get out of it, do you?
Bud Corliss: Silly. Who wants out?

& Dorothy Kingship: It’s no way to start a marriage, with deceit.

& Bud Corliss: Don’t look down. You might get dizzy.

& Ellen Kingship: Don’t you even begin to see?
Gordon Grant: I guess we’ll just have to face it. You’re talking to a pretty stupid man.
Ellen Kingship: Brand-new gloves, a borrowed belt... a blue handkerchief, an old blouse...
Gordon Grant: «Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.»
Ellen Kingship: Where’s the Marriage License Bureau?

& Bud Corliss: I’m a man with a shameful, sinister secret. You know what it is?... I’ve never really been in love before.

& Ellen Kingship: I’m not worried about the caviar. Just be sure there’s enough champagne.

    Pete: It’s Polish.

& Det. Divinci: I’m not in Hawaii. I’m here, right? I don’t want to be here. I want to be in Hawaii. But I can’t be in Hawaii. Therefore, I think about it so as not to get depressed about being here... But I’m here.
    Det. Rodriguez: Right.

& Det. Divinci: Stop being an idiot. All right? We’re the cops on this case. This is our case. We’re gonna find the fucking killer.
Det. Rodriguez: We are the fucking killers!
Det. Divinci: Since when does that matter?

& Det. Divinci: Whatever evidence there is, it’s got to go through us. We lay down a trail, we make it nice and logical. We’re the teachers and two and two can add up to five if it’s our classroom.

& Det. Divinci: You better have a good alibi, James, or it’s good Ali-bye-bye.

& Det. Divinci: Maybe I got plans...
Cynthia Webb: Yeah, I don’t want to hear them. Plans just make you think that something’s gonna get better. I’m fine. I don’t need to get screwed up waiting for something good to happen.

& Joe Doe: I killed a man. I should be punished.
Elliot Goff: I’m a little surprised.
    Joe Doe: Why?
Elliot Goff: Nobody ever wants to be punished for what they’ve done. That is a totally new concept for me, believe me.

& Det. Rodriguez: He’s not a fucking doctor. You picked a saint to pin a murder on! God!

& Det. Divinci: We can make it look gang related...

& Divinci: You’re asking me what I want?! Are you gonna grant me three wishes? Let’s see... I don’t know what to ask for... Money would be nice. Love would be better. But a little fucking loyalty... you can never get enough of that... We’ll start with money.

& Divinci: Let me tell you something. The only difference between a witness and a liar... is just one of them knows what he’s doing.

& Divinci: You know, that’s the thing about life. You can never, ever lose your sense of humor. Without it, you got nothing.

Colonel Weber: Gavisti. He says it means «an argument.» What do you say it means?
Dr. Louise Banks: «A desire for more cows.»

& Dr. Louise Banks: Kangaroo. In 1770, Captain James Cook’s ship ran aground off the coast of Australia, and he led a party into the country and they met the Aboriginal people. One of the sailors pointed at the animals that hop around and put their babies in their pouch, and he asked what they were, and the Aborigines said, «Kanguru.»

Notes on a Scandal

& Barbara Covett: People trust me with their secrets. But who do I trust with mine?..

& Barbara Covett: The first day of a new term. Here come the local pubescent proles, the future plumbers and shop assistants and doubtless the odd terrorist, too.

& Barbara Covett: In the old days, we confiscated cigarettes and wank mags. Now it’s knives and crack cocaine. And they call it progress.

& Sandy Pabblem: «The history department functions as one would expect for a school of this intake. Examination results have been consistent for 30 years, below the national average but above the level of catastrophe. Recommendation, no change necessary.»...
Barbara Covett: It took me most of the summer to write it.

& Sheba Hart: When you started, didn’t you want to give them a real education to help them overcome the poverty of their backgrounds?
Barbara Covett: Oh, yes, of course. But one soon learns that teaching is crowd control... We’re a branch of the social services... Console yourself with the gems. That’s when it’s satisfying. You can make a real difference. The rest is just cattle-prod and pray.

& Barbara Covett: One must make an effort when one receives an invitation. The art of it is seeming not to.

& Barbara Covett: It’s a peculiar trait of the privileged, immediate incautious intimacy. But Sheba went well beyond the tendencies of her class. She was utterly candid, a novice confessing to the mother superior.

& Barbara Covett: It began to feel like our secret, and secrets can be seductive.

& Steven Connolly: You’re a nice person and you’ve been cool and it’s been great, OK? But it was supposed to be fun, and now it’s a serious thing.

& Barbara Covett: They always let you down in the end. Jennifer said I was too intense. Meaning what, exactly? That I am loyal in my friendships? That I will go to the ends of the earth for someone I admire?

& Barbara Covett: People like Sheba think they know what it is to be lonely, but of the drip, drip of long-haul, no-end-in-sight solitude, they know nothing.
What it’s like to construct an entire weekend around a visit to the launderette or to be so chronically untouched that the accidental brush of a bus conductor’s hand sends a jolt of longing straight to your groin.

Criminal

& Jericho Stewart: I don’t know what happens next, but this I do know. You hurt me, I hurt you worse.

& Warden: Truth is, I have no way to discipline him. You can’t punish someone who doesn’t know they did anything wrong. He does not understand society or how people are supposed to behave.

& Dr. Franks: Anything you’re allergic to?
    Jericho Stewart: Yeah, luck.

& Jericho Stewart: Cheers... Who the fuck says «cheers»?

& Jericho Stewart: I wish I could keep being him.

& Jericho Stewart: You’re the guy who killed me.

& Fleabag: Plaits. Either she’s got her period or some serious shit’s gone down.

& Claire: Where’s her head?
Fleabag: She’s got your boobs — she doesn’t need one.

& Godmother: I’m just very lucky. I will be touched until the day I die. And so will you, Claire. I mean, it’s really all that humans want — is to be loved... and to be touched.

& Taylor: No, no, Pete. Way harder to look inside someone else’s head than you think.

& Mr. Mukherjee: First lesson of poker: unless it’s a bluff, never make a bet that can only be called by hands that beat you.

& Winslow: The important thing is we’re on the same side.
Bagwell: Yeah? And what side is that?
    Winslow: Law enforcement?..
Bagwell: No, that’s where I’m gonna have to disagree with you... I know not here to enforce, brother. I’m here to empower.

& Vince: .....And Lonnie comes up to me, and he just whispers in my ear... «Okay, motherfucker. You broke it. You bought it.»

& Vince: Eddie, Eddie, Eddie. It’s best for you not to say anything right now.

& Vince: You broke it. You bought it.

& Pete: Do you remember what you said to me? Eddie, what did you say to me?
Eddie: I said I was scared.
Pete: And what did I tell you?
Eddie: Put my head on your chest. Close my eyes. That you would be scared for the both of us. Marius... I’m scared.

Over a Barrel

Elementary 5×13

& Holmes: Doesn’t matter what I think. Armed standoffs have a habit of ending unpredictably.

& Holmes: There were no trials in New York on February 12.
    Det. Bell: Why is that?
Holmes: Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. New York is one of seven states which observes it as a holiday, and all the courthouses are closed.

& Det. Bell: There a... reason you’ve got a totem pole in your bathroom?
Holmes: It’s too big for the closet.
    Det. Bell: Hmm.

& Holmes: It’s New York from above. This is a small fragment of the thousands of hours of covert surveillance footage recorded by the FBI and their fleet of drones. They do so over many major U.S. cities. All in the name of homeland security. Hmm.

& Det. Bell: Can’t exactly go walking into gang territory with a sign that says, «Looking for bad guys.» .... This is a bad idea.
Holmes: Don’t have time for good ideas.

& Jack Brunelle: Do you have any idea what it’s like to lose a child? If you ask any parent if they would die in place of a daughter or a son, I guarantee you the answer would be yes. And do you know why? It’s not because of honor, or duty, or parental responsibility. It’s because it’s easier. It’s easier to die than it is to be left behind.

& Holmes: Is it just me, Detective Bell, or do you hear that?
    Det. Bell: Hear... what?
Holmes: The sound of evidence being destroyed? It’s coming from inside that building. Thank heavens the Supreme Court 2011 ruling in Kentucky v. King grants us probable cause to search the premises in precisely this situation.

& Det. Bell: The question is, what does that have to do with this?
Holmes: Well, I tasted some of the Shoreline 99s’ maple syrup before I left their building. It has a woody, vanilla essence, with a hint of crushed leaves. If I can identify a batch of syrup from one of the... city’s many pancake dispensaries...

& Holmes: I began exploring the notion when I recalled the writings of 19th century Russian occultist Helena Blavatsky. To paraphrase: no myth is wholesale fable. Even the most fanciful legends begin as a small grain of truth.

& Watson: Here’s what I don’t get. I mean, you could shave your own head, so why do I have to do it?
Holmes: Mm... partners in everything, I suppose, Watson.

Snowden

& Drill Sergeant: Snowden! Where the fuck is Snowden?

& Corbin O’Brian: Any other influences?
Edward Snowden: I’d say Joseph Campbell, Star Wars, Thoreau, Ayn Rand...
Corbin O’Brian: One man can stop the motor of the world. Atlas Shrugged.
Edward Snowden: Yes, sir. I believe that.
Corbin O’Brian: Let’s try again. Why do you want to join the CIA?

& Edward Snowden: You won’t have that problem with me. I don’t drink or do drugs.
Hank Forrester: What is your sin of choice?
    Edward Snowden: Uh, computers.
Hank Forrester: Well, then, Snowden, you’ve come to the right little whorehouse.

& Hank Forrester: You would think intelligence would count for something in the intelligence business... You wanna know what it really is? What really sets the agenda? Military industrial happiness management.

& Corbin O’Brian: In 20 years, Iraq will be a hellhole nobody cares about. Terrorism’s a short-term threat. The real threats will come from China, Russia, Iran, and they’ll come as SQL injections and malware. Without minds like yours, this country will be torn apart in cyberspace. I don’t want to risk losing you for some horseshit war over sand and oil.

& Edward Snowden: How is this all possible?
Gabriel Sol: Um, keyword selectors. «Attack,» «take out Bush.» So think of it as a Google search, except instead of searching only what people make public, we’re also looking at everything they don’t. So... Emails, chats, SMS, whatever.
Edward Snowden: Yeah, but which people?
Gabriel Sol: The whole kingdom, Snow White.

& Edward Snowden: Is there some kind of trick to it?
CIA Agent Geneva: It’s all about finding the pressure point. Everything else is just pushing on it.

& Corbin O’Brian: If you want to play with all the new toys and be safe, you pay the price of admission.
Edward Snowden: Yeah, except people, they don’t even know they’ve made that bargain.

& Corbin O’Brian: Where’s the modern battlefield, soldier?
    Edward Snowden: Everywhere.
Corbin O’Brian: What’s the first rule of battle?
Edward Snowden: Never reveal your position.
Corbin O’Brian: And if one unauthorized person knew? If Congress knew?
Edward Snowden: So would the enemy.
Corbin O’Brian: That, Mr. Snowden, is the state of the world. Secrecy is security, and security is victory.

& Edward Snowden: I feel like I’m made to do this. And if I don’t do it, then I don’t know anybody else that can. It’s like I’m on a trajectory that I can’t turn back from.

& Trevor James: You make it sound criminal, man. It’s war. It’s a job.
Catfish: Oh, I don’t know, man. You saying jobs can’t be criminal?
Trevor James: Not if you’re working for the government.
Edward Snowden: You ever hear about the Nuremberg trials, Trev? They weren’t that long ago.
Trevor James: Yeah. And we hung the Nazi big shots, right?
Edward Snowden: Yeah, well, the big shots were the first trial, but then the next trial were just the judges, and lawyers, and policemen, and guards, and ordinary people just doing their jobs, following orders. That’s where we got the Nuremberg principles, which then the UN made into international law, just in case ordinary jobs become criminal again... Just sayin’.

& Edward Snowden: What’s keeping you safe is that you don’t know anything.

Mr. Church

& Charlie: Henry Joseph Church could have been anything he wanted to be. He chose to cook. The key, he said, jazz.

& Marie: Next time, I want a story that’s not going to make me cry my eyes out.
Henry Church: Some writers ain’t happy till they made the reader cry. And some readers ain’t happy till they do.

& Charlie: It’s an awful feeling to love someone so much that you absolutely hate them for leaving you. Even before they’ve gone.

& Henry Church: Once upon a time...
Izzy: They always start that way.
Henry Church: Well, that’s how you know it’s a story, my dear.

& Charlie: Mr. Church once said a book is meant to be read from beginning to end, but is best understood from end to beginning.

& Charlie: People act strange around death. There are those who talk about everything but the person who died. Those who talk about only the person who died. Those who try to cheer you up. And those who can’t help but make you cry. And then there are those who say nothing at all. Because they don’t have to.

& Henry Church: "You gave me the most important thing life can offer. You gave me a family. And love.

The Covenant

Homeland 6×3

& Mina: Come on. There’s a killer view from the bedroom window.

& Saul: Don’t try to talk. You won’t be able to for a while. Probably a good thing, too. That way, we can skip all the formalities.

& Nafisi: I’m... I’m free to go?
Saul: You can go, but you’re not free.

& Nafisi: Something you should know... Iran doesn’t want a nuclear weapon. It never did.
    Saul: Nonsense.
Nafisi: It’s true. Three decades of sanctions were killing us. We had to find a way to get them lifted. So we started spinning centrifuges. That got some attention. So we spun some more. Even more attention. In the end, all we had to do was negotiate away a program we never wanted in the first place.

& Saul: Haven’t you driven enough people from their homes already? Bulldoze their villages, seized their property under laws they had no part in makin’?..

& Saul: Ah, yes. Promise. A covenant with God made thousands of years ago. Doesn’t that strike you as a form of insanity?

& Dorit: You don’t understand, Saul. You never have. I love the life that God has given me.
Saul: How can you love making enemies? How can you love knowing that your very presence here makes peace less possible?
Dorit: I have a family, a community, a life filled with faith and purpose. Saul... what do you have?

& Carrie: Really? He used that word, «conclusive»? .... Intelligence officers usually hedge their bets. It’s... It’s kind of an art form. We use phrases like «best judgment,» or, I don’t know, «degree of confidence.» That’s why when George Tenet said «slam dunk,» we all sat up in our chairs.

& Michelle: What’s the matter with me?!

& Michelle: My God. My God! And I was making that up.

& Michelle: First rule of business, pretend to negotiate and then take what you want.

& Michelle: Second rule of business is when a stanky, hummus-eating bitch and her yeti of a daughter gets in your face, you gotta regulate. Hannah, give me some space.

& Jack Reacher: Two things are gonna happen in the next 90 seconds...

& Sheriff: Who the hell are you?
Jack Reacher: The guy you didn’t count on.

& Colonel Morgan: Welcome back to the Army, Major. You’re under arrest.

& Jack Reacher: It’s the haircut. All you contractors go to the same barber?

& Cage Match Goon: So how do you want to do this?
Jack Reacher: How about one at a time? I get a baseball bat.

& Jack Reacher: Fellas?..

& Samantha: When things get hairy, I just pick out the alpha guy. ... Strong guys don’t hurt you. The weak guys do that. Strong guys always have little sisters. Or they want one. I don’t know why, that’s just how it is.

& Espin: What’s the drill, Major?
Turner: Drill is we enforce the law. Seatbelts, please.

& The Hunter: Is that fear I hear in your voice, Jack?
Jack Reacher: I’m gonna break your arms, I’m gonna break your legs. I’m gonna break your neck. What you hear is excitement.

& Jack Reacher: Look at me. You look at me.

& Samantha: So, Reacher, are you my father or not?

    Gracie: Obedience.
    Lindsey: Very good. Number two?
Gracie: Hard work. ... Reverence... Enlightenment.

& Devon: Every scar’s a story. The more you live, the more you get. Nothing to be embarrassed about.

& Carl: Blood will always rise to the occasion if you give it the chance. You just have to ask yourself what matters most to you: your problems or your pride?

& Will: I don’t know what’s waiting for me on the other side of that wall.
Devon: Are you kidding? The rest of your life.

& Katie: She doesn’t have all the answers. And neither do I. You know, you... you have to ask questions, and you have to trust your heart. No one can tell you what to believe. You get to decide that all by yourself. And look, you’re... you’re gonna make mistakes. That’s how you learn. We all do.
    Gracie: Even you?
