House of Cards 5×11

Chapter 63

& MSNBC Host: If Underwood is impeached, then.... Tom, where would impeachment leave Vice President Claire Underwood?
Hammerschmidt: In the Oval, as president. What their arrangement would be, in that case, is anybody’s guess...

& Claire: The people want to forgive you. Let them.

& Eric: Your legacy won’t die. It’ll be solidified. You’ll be infamous.
Underwood: Legacy and infamy are not the same thing.
Eric: You’ll be remembered. Who cares why?

& Claire: Just to be clear, it’s not that I haven’t always known you were there. It’s that I have mixed feelings about you. I question your intentions... and I’m ambivalent about attention. But don’t take it personally... It’s how I feel about most everybody.

& Romero: Well, as of this morning, I’m officially an independent. ... Four years from now, I think an outsider’s what the voter will be looking for.
Usher: Yeah, third-party candidate is the future, and always will be.

& Underwood: You know people. You know them for years. And then... suddenly they’re like strangers in your kitchen... Familiar can turn foreign on a dime.

& Claire: You have to go... You need to leave... There’s just no place for you here anymore.

& Underwood: Were the men before us any more moral? Any more worthy of the power and position that they had found themselves in? Any more capable of doing a single goddamn thing for the public? Well, yes and no. History has a way of looking better than it was. Or perhaps Shakespeare was right... We’re all just madmen leading the blind.

& Doug: I understand if you think I’m a monster. But I’d do it again. To save the president, I’d do anything.

& Laura: I’m not fucking you because I like you. I’m fucking you because I hate you.

& Doug: Who was he to you?

& Underwood: Maybe he’s just happy...
Claire: Happiness isn’t my concern. Not now, not ever.

& Seth: That won’t play. She’ll look uninformed, and the people know she isn’t.
Usher: Oh, the distance will help her look innocent.
Claire: Innocent, guilty, capable, incompetent, whatever it is... the public is going to think the opposite. So, really there is no winning.

The Legend of Tarzan

& John Clayton: Well, I’ve already seen Africa. And it’s hot.

& Leon Rom: I need you to scream for me.
    Jane: Like a damsel?
Leon Rom: ... No matter. He’s Tarzan, you’re Jane. He’ll come for you.

& Williams: How are we suppose to catch a train going 40 miles an hour?
    Tarzan: Gravity.

& Leon Rom: ...It can also serve as a necklace.

& Williams: Why is it people don’t ride zebras?
Tarzan: The horses kick to escape. Zebras continue until you are dead.

& Williams: Zeebra. Zehbra. Tomayto. Tomahto.

& Tarzan: Get on your knees and bow... Right now! Expose your most vulnerable parts.
Williams: .... You want me to lick his nuts too?
Tarzan: If you want to live... George.
    Williams: I wasn’t gonna!
Tarzan: Oh, you looked like you would.

& Leon Rom: What was that?
    Tarzan: Mating Call.

The Pot

Grace and Frankie 3×6

& Nwabudike: What’s wrong?
    Frankie: I’m bleeding!
    Nwabudike: What?!
    Frankie: Emotionally.
Nwabudike: Ahh, Mom, we talked about the difference between physical and emotional bleeding.

& Nwabudike: How are you?
Frankie: Oh! My roommate has a gun!
Nwabudike: Like a real gun or like an emotional kind of...

& Nwabudike: According to my mother, your mother has a gun. Is this true?
    Brianna: Wait, Frankie found Louise?
Nwabudike: Your mother’s gun is named Louise?
Brianna: Your brother’s name is Coyote?

& Grace: It’s still not working. No, I told you the pot doesn’t work on me... My mouth is dry.
Brianna: Marijuana’s finally met its match: Grace Hanson. There’s not enough weed in this world to relax that woman.

& Mallory: We could smoke all of Frankie’s pot...
Grace: I promised her if I ever smoked the pot I would do it with her.
    Brianna: Or... it’s a double «fuck you.»

Twin Peaks 3×9

& Tammy: Try to keep your voice down.
    Director Cole: What?!

& Director Cole: Hello?! Colonel?! What have you got?!.. I don’t appreciate your language one bit, Colonel!... Oh, a place. Buckhorn!.. Buckhorn, South Dakota!.. West South Dakota!

& Albert: I know. I know. «Fuck you, Albert.»

& Macklay: William Hastings was having an affair with the local librarian, Ruth Davenport. Now, Davenport’s head was found atop the headless body of your Major Briggs. Once we took Hastings into custody, his wife was murdered in their house, apparently by their lawyer, a man named George Bouncer, who is now also in custody. And the next day, Hastings’ secretary died in a car explosion.
Albert: What happens in season two?
Director Cole: Apologies in advance for Albert!

& Director Cole: Albert!... Let’s think out loud!!

& Sheriff Truman: Hey, Lucy.
Lucy: Sheriff Truman, I’m not here. I’m on my lunch break.

& Sheriff Truman: «Two hundred fifty-three yards east of Jack Rabbit’s Palace. Before leaving Jack Rabbit’s Palace, put some soil from that area in your pocket.» And two dates. And a time. Same time. 2:53. That’s two days from now, and the day after... Jack Rabbit’s Palace?.. I never heard of such a place.

& Sheriff Truman: Wait a minute. There’s something else... «COOPER/COOPER.»
    Deputy Hawk: Two Coopers.

& Albert: Fruitcake, anyone?

& Ella: What’s the big fucking deal? I mean, I did the fucking work. Like, how can you fuck up serving burgers, you know what I mean?

Chapter 62

& Usher: She’s testifying ’cause she doesn’t want to go to jail. Which is the only reason anyone testifies.

& Romero: No, I always walk the final 50 yards. Never know when you might get a chance to press some flesh... Hi, I’m Alex Romero. I represent the Seventh District of Arizona. I want to know what keeps you up at night so I can work all day to address it. The future belongs to all of us. I hope I can count on your support. What do you think, Mark? Huh? I mean, you’re the expert.

& Underwood: I go on being presidential. That’s the only way that I can deal with this. It’s my first 100 days, for God’s sake!

& Underwood: There aren’t enough Ahmadis in the world. Not for all we’ve done.

& Davis: I’m in the Hoover Building. It’s the ugliest building in... in the city. I close my eyes as I walk in. Stop by any time. Especially if you’re in the mood to talk. We could use someone who says as little as you do.

& Davis: ...as I explained, Syria is like a different country one day to the next.
Underwood: Yes, well, you can thank Viktor Petrov for that.
    Davis: Oh, I do.

& Davis: I just want peace...
Underwood: Yes, there’s nothing that makes profits like peace.
Davis: And nothing makes peace like profits.

& Davis: Mr. President, may I be blunt?... There’s going to be a gas attack happening in the city of Homs. If you were to, let us say, draw a line in the sand... and if this tragic attack were to happen... the US government would have to send in an additional 30,000 or so soldiers. To protect the oil lines, to keep Petrov from getting into Damascus. And, of course, to protect the people.

& Davis: ... But once he’s done with you... it’s as if a switch gets turned off.

& Usher: ... But she is merciless. Single-minded as a single mind can be.

& Claire: Sarin gas. Mostly against civilians in suburban areas of Homs.
Underwood: We’re dealing with animals here.
    Claire: It’s horrifying.

& Durant: But if we know this is going to happen, well, then why aren’t we stopping it before it does?
Claire: .... Francis held on to your resignation letter. And he wants to tear it up...

& Usher: Did you have a good time?
Davis: I never do at those things anymore.
    Usher: Necessary evils.
Davis: It’s not like the old days, when you used to meet surprising people.
Usher: Uh... did people get less surprising or are we less easily surprised?
    Davis: Well, exactly.

& Usher: He could be a great president...
Davis: But does he want to be? And what is great? And then there’s her...
Usher: What about her? What about her?

& Davis: I can help you get what you want. If you tell me what it is. I enjoy helping others...
Claire: I think you know what I want.
Davis: Yes... But do you want it now or in four years?

& Underwood: «Beware entangling alliances,» Mr. President. You know, that quote is often attributed to Washington, but it was actually Jefferson who said it.

& Claire: There has to be a way out, Francis.
Underwood: Does there? Is there? Or is this my presidency? Forever with a target on my back...

Кристофер Прист — Гламур

цитаты | Гламур | Кристофер Прист | London | sci-fi | amnesia | invisible

The Fate of the Furious

& Dom: You make a deal, you gotta live up to it.
Raldo: You make a deal, you gonna live up to it.
Dom: «Gonna» live up to it? Oh, so you’re one of those types...

& Dom: He knows it doesn’t matter what’s under a hood. The only thing that matters is who’s behind the wheel.

& Cipher: This is fate.
Dom: I choose to make my own fate.
Cipher: Not today. .... You see, that’s the funny thing about fate. It’s cunning. It can bring you beautiful things, and it can also bring you moments like this... Oh, you’re gonna want to work for me. You’re gonna betray your brothers, abandon your code, and shatter your family. You see, your team is about to go up against the only thing they can’t handle.
    Dom: What’s that?
    Cipher: You.

& Hobbs: Let me tell you something. The only thing that I love more than saving lives is my daughter. So, if you don’t shut up with this government bullshit right now, and start showing some team spirit and respect for the Red Dragons, I’m gonna have all 20 of them line up and kick you right in the tay-tay.
    DS Allan: Go Dragons.
    Hobbs: Say it again.
    DS Allan: Go Dragons!
    Hobbs: Attaboy. Go Dragons.

& Tej: And, Roman, whatever you do, don’t think.

& Hobbs: Saw that look in his eye, and I’ve seen that look before... Dominic Toretto just went rogue.

& Mr. Nobody: Rule number one... Know your audience. I gave you your shot. You shit the bed. Now I’m gonna show you how to get this done.

& Cipher: Let me ask you something, Dom. What’s the best thing in your life?
    Dom: Family.
Cipher: No, it’s not. Not if you’re being honest. It’s the 10 seconds between start and finish, when you’re not thinking about anything. No family, no obligations. Just you. Being free.

& Cipher: It’s bullshit. It’s not you. Be who you are. Why live only a quarter mile at a time when you can live your whole life that way?

& Hobbs: Ah, my day just got a whole hell of a lot better... Mr. Nobody, you wanna tell me why you just put me in a room with this tea-and-crumpets eating, criminal sumbitch?

& Cipher: Nothing is necessary. Everything is a choice.

& Cipher: Have you heard of Choice Theory, Dom?.. There is a bunch of axioms, but only two you really need to concern yourself with. One, the only person’s behavior we can control is our own. And, two, the only thing we can truly give another person is information. So, let me give you some.

& Magdalene: Do you know who I am?
    Dom: It’s why I’m here.
Magdalene: Do you know what I’m capable of?
    Dom: It’s why I’m here.
Magdalene: I’ll give you until I finish me cuppa. And I’m fucking thirsty.

& Deckard: Shame I’m gonna have to bounce your head off the fender when this is all over.
Hobbs: Ah, well, with all due respect, Captain, when this whole thing is over, ... and I’m gonna knock your teeth so far down your throat, you’re gonna stick a toothbrush right up your ass to brush them.

& Mr. Nobody: You guys are gonna get along just great. Which proves rule number two, you never lose everything.

& Cipher: I want every chip with a zero-day exploit in a two-mile radius around that motorcade now.
Zombie Car Tech: ...There’s over a thousand of them.
Cipher: Hack ’em all. It’s zombie time... I’d buckle up if I were you.

& Cipher: Everything you’re feeling right now, this rage, a sense of loss, it’s not real. It’s a survival instinct wired deep into our brains to ensure continuation of the species.
When early man would visit a watering hole, if they didn’t watch their child, and it got snatched by a crocodile, our brains would create a painful but instructional memory, so it would never happen again.
This idea of «family» that is so core with you, that rules your world, it’s a biological lie. You don’t have to accept it. I don’t.

& Cipher: ...The codes will get me the nukes and the nukes will get me what I want today, tomorrow, and every day after that.
    Dom: And what’s that?
Cipher: Accountability. The second I fire off one of those nukes, I put the superpowers of this world on notice that, when they cross the line, I’m gonna be there to hold them responsible. Because the truth is, Dom, to the world out there, I am the crocodile at the watering hole.

& Little Nobody: You know, I think I figured it out.
    Mr. Nobody: What’s that?
    Little Nobody: Rule number three.
    Mr. Nobody: Which is?
Little Nobody: There are no rules.

& Roman: I’m freezing, man.
Tej: This ain’t for me. I come from a different kind of lifestyle, brah. Ladies know me. They know where I’m at with it. I tried to take a piss, I didn’t even recognize myself.

& Tej: Why are they shootin’ at me?
Roman: Maybe ’cause you’re in an orange Lamborghini, I don’t know.

& Deckard: Okay, let’s go, Scarface. These assholes ain’t gonna kill themselves.

& Magdalene: Toretto knows where he is. He’s got this thing. It can see everything. It’s like... It’s called the Devil’s Bum Hole or something.
Deckard: It’s called the God’s Eye.
    Magdalene: Yeah, well, whatever.

& Dom: Everyone, meet Brian.

& Underwood: Acknowledging defeat is never easy. Doing it in public is a living hell.

& Claire: Victory.
Underwood: With a whiff of defeat.
Claire: It’s taken a long time to get here, but we’re here. Cheers, Francis. Everything gets easier from now on.

& Usher: Listen, you lost. But more than half the country still considers you their president... This is what’s required. Go down there, give your speech... Concede.

& Underwood: I would like to make my first 100 days as the duly elected president as productive as possible. Of course, there are many challenges..... But the biggest challenge that we face, and the one that I’m going to need all of your help on, is reuniting a country that has never been more divided than it is today...

& Underwood: We have a full term ahead of us. There’s gonna be a great deal that we’re gonna be able to accomplish, the three of us.

& Usher: Look... I’m just here to make sure your four years turn into eight, but... it’s up to you, of course. But we’re talking about two seats... one line...
&Underwood: Give him what he wants.

& Underwood: The office of Pres...
Yes, here we go again. Secretary of State. That’s what I wanted. That’s all I wanted. That’s what I was promised. And now, here I am, President of these United States.
You made this bed, America. You voted for me. Are you confused? Are you afraid? Because what you thought you wanted is now here. And there you are, staring back, slack-jawed, bewildered, wondering if this is what you actually asked for.
        This democracy,
your democracy, elected me. And if you think it was hard getting here, you’re beginning to understand what I’m willing to do to stay.
I look across at this crowd gathered today and I know that these are not my supporters. I’m looking at people who are waiting, with a smile on their face, for their turn. And the most vicious among them are the ones who are smiling and clapping the hardest.

Power is a lot like real estate. Remember?
    Judge: So help me God.
    Underwood: So help me God.

& Usher: Is he worth the fight?
Underwood: There is no neutrality. I expect total loyalty or you are an enemy.
    Usher: Understood, Mr. President.

& Claire: I have a soft spot for that patriotic stuff.

& Surkova: Please spread your arms and legs.
    Kate: Excuse me?!
Surkova: Otherwise, there is no interview.

& Claire: You look very beautiful. Presidential.
Underwood: You look beautiful. Vice Presidential.

& Underwood: You know, they say the most vulnerable part of the human body... is the throat... and that you never really know how you feel about somebody... until they have their hands around your throat. So tell me... How do you feel now?

& Claire: I thought we killed that committee.
Underwood: Nothing ever really dies in the House. It just plays in front of a smaller and smaller audience.

& Underwood: Tom... don’t cheat on my wife.

& Doug: Like I said, they’ll call you if they need you.

& Claire: It’s hard to know who to trust these days...
    Underwood: Isn’t it?

Kong: Skull Island

& Senator Willis: I don’t believe I’m saying this, but that almost made sense.

& Conrad: An uncharted island? Let me list all the ways you’re gonna die. Rain, heat, mud, disease carrying flies and mosquitoes. Sure, you could load up on the atabrine for the malaria, but what about the other bacteria? We haven’t even started on the things that want to eat you alive.

& Jack Chapman: Is that a monkey?

& Bill Randa: This planet doesn’t belong to us. Ancient species owned this earth long before mankind. And if we keep our heads buried in the sand, they will take it back.

& Hank Marlow: You are more beautiful than a hot dog and a beer at Wrigley Field on opening day. But you’re real... Right?

& Hank Marlow: The Iwis won’t speak their name. But I call them Skull-crawlers.
    Conrad: Why?
Hank Marlow: ’Cause it sounds neat.
    Conrad: Okay.
Hank Marlow: Look, I just made that name up. I’m trying to scare you.

& Hank Marlow: Who’s winning the war?
    Conrad: Which one?
Hank Marlow: ...That makes sense, I guess.

& Cole: Sometimes, an enemy doesn’t exist till you go looking for one.
Bill Randa: What happens when they show up on your doorstep?
Cole: I’ll still have this gun.

& Hank Marlow: Hold the phone there, Churchill. Russia was our ally. Now, you’re saying we’re at war with them?
Conrad: It’s more of a cold war.
Hank Marlow: Cold war like they take the summers off?

& Conrad: I suppose no man comes home from war. Not really.

& Hank Marlow: That’s the big one.

The Phone Message

Seinfeld 2×4

& Jerry: The bad thing about television... is that everybody you see on television is doing something better... than what you’re doing.

& George: For me to ask a woman out, I gotta get into a mental state like karate guys before they break bricks.

& Jerry: You’re still thinking about this?!
George: She invites me up at 1 2:00 at night for coffee. And I don’t go up. «No, thank you. I don’t want coffee. It keeps me up. Too late for me to drink coffee.» I said this to her. People this stupid shouldn’t be allowed to live.

& George: She invited me up! Coffee’s not coffee. Coffee is sex.
    Elaine: Maybe coffee was coffee...
George: Coffee’s coffee in the morning, not at 12:00 at night!

& George: ... Yesterday, I’m a volcano. I try one more call. The machine comes on, and I let fly like Mussolini from the balcony. «Where the hell do you get the nerve? You invite me up for coffee, and then you don’t call me back for four days? I don’t like coffee. I don’t have to come up! I’d like to get one more shot at the coffee so I can spit it in your face!»
    Jerry: You said that?
    George: I lost it...

& Jerry: I love my phone machine. I wish I was a phone machine. If I saw somebody on the street I didn’t want to talk to, I could go: «Excuse me. I’m not in right now. If you could just leave a message, I could walk away.»

Chapter 60

& Underwood: ...So, welcome to Elysian Fields.

& Usher: There’s no talking politics or business while we’re here, gentlemen.
Underwood: Yes, we don’t want to poison all this nature with words.
    Usher: You know the motto.
Underwood: Yes, «Buzzing bees, sting not here.» It’s hard to miss.

& Usher: Fuck Ohio. This is the campaign.

& Underwood: The general is a traitor, you know that.
Usher: The general is trying to be a politician. You would have done the same.
    Underwood: .... Yeah, but better.

& Durant: We’re the only country in position to rescue. So, 20 minutes ago, we offered.
    Claire: They declined?
Durant: And denied. Petrov does not want us to see what’s on board.

& Viktor Petrov: A rescue at sea and a chance to embarrass us? Just before your second Election Day? Sounds like I would be helping you, hmm?
Claire: The boat sinks, your crew dies. How is that going to look at home?
Viktor Petrov: I tell my people how things look, and that’s how they look.

& Viktor Petrov: Ah, I don’t like to quantify human worth... but Macallan’s is higher. Social media is a powerful tool.

& Usher: Oppenheimer was a member. That tree right over there, right under that tree, Manhattan Project was born.
Underwood: And right under this one, I’m relieving myself. I hope you’re not equating me to the atom bomb.

& Tusk: Are you hungry? I have, uh, eggs, and orange juice, mountain oysters...
Underwood: You mean bull’s testicles, don’t you? I prefer to call things what they are.

& Tusk: How do you like your eggs?
    Underwood: In the afternoon.

& Underwood: No. History is earned. You win the day, and then you win the day after, and you do the same thing every day until you’re dead. And you’re remembered not for the winning, but because you never lost!

& Underwood: A little restraint... would be unexpected.

& Underwood: ...you can’t just sit back and admire the view. I’ve learned you’ve got to grab the present by the balls. That’s where the American people live.
Brockhart: You sound more like a salesman than a president, Mr. President.
Underwood: Well, if we’re Americans, then we are salesmen, right? That’s our birthright. Cars and phones and a gallon of gas.

& Brockhart: That’s not how I see America. I’m a patriot. I serve.
Underwood: Well, then, we salute you, General. But you serve to what purpose?.. So the rest of America can sell.

& Brockhart: People want a president they can trust.
Underwood: No, they don’t. They want a president they know. And I know them. I’m selling a tomorrow that you can see and touch and feel. Now, you take that away, and I don’t know what this country has left. Except a group of grown men standing around in a circle, all staring at a small screen. Looking in instead of looking out.

& Underwood: You know why I didn’t hire you back then?.. Because when you went to pick up the check, you told me I didn’t have to pay you. That you would work for free. I don’t trust that. Because no one works for free.

& Claire: Let’s get back to where we left off. What will it take to get Aidan Macallan back on American soil?
Viktor Petrov: ... He likes it here.

& Underwood: They’ve never wanted me, not from the beginning, no matter what I do!
    Claire: Fuck ’em.
    Underwood: I intend to.

& Underwood: ...what’s going to go unsaid in this conversation is that Claire and I... are willing... to do anything. And we know... that you are no different.

& Underwood: Common woe, be done.

& Underwood: Who do you think you are?
Claire: I think I am a temporary president trying to get you back in office.
Underwood: And if you don’t think that we’re at a critical juncture in the road, you are pathetically mistaken. Wake up, Claire! Wake up!

& LeAnn: Is the former president meeting us in the Rose Garden?

TURN 4×4

& Arnold: I’m asking that you unleash me, sir. With fear and terror at my side, I will bring the hammer of war down on Washington’s head like the god Ares himself.

& Anna: To hear her tell it, they kissed only once.
Abraham: Well, if it’s done right... sometimes it’s all you need.

& Townsend: Is «monarch» spelled M-A-N?
Rivington: Argh! We’ve printed 638 copies, so tonight it is.

& Townsend: «Rebels Rampage. Massacre at Lyme.» Have you no shame?
    Rivington: None whatsoever.
Townsend: The rhetoric, the barrage, it’s all just to sell more copy?
Rivington: What else would it be for?
Townsend: I believe it is a newsman’s obligation to report every event as fairly and objectively as he can.
Rivington: Hmm, open and uninfluenced?.. With work rendered as generally useful and amusing as possible without personal satire or censures acrimonious to any society or class of men...
    Townsend: Wise words.
Rivington: From a naive young man...
    Townsend: You?!
    Rivington: «The Royal Gazette» was once «The New York Gazetteer,» ’73 to ’75.

& Townsend: What happened?
Rivington: The Sons of Liberty happened. I ran opinions on both sides of an issue, but they thought that any word that did not actively indict the Crown was a sin to be punished. And punish they did...

& Townsend: You’ve let them beat you...
Rivington: I’ve let them... teach me. One cannot speak truth to power if power has no use for truth. For all their talk of liberty and virtue, the Patriots are as zealous and intolerant as the enemy they seek to defeat.

& Caleb: He is a man. Not a god and not the devil. He loses men every day... Fathers, brothers, sons. And like any other man...
    Abraham: He wants revenge.
Caleb: ... I was gonna say he feels each loss.

& Simcoe: Your whole future, your name depends upon the outcome of this war. Suffer defeat and you’ll face infamy as America’s Judas. Achieve victory, and they’ll build monuments to you... You’ll never quit. You’ll do whatever it takes to win. I waited for the right man.

& Arnold: As a parent, you realize that your name is not inherited from your father. It is rather a loan from your children. It is a treasure that must be protected.

& Abraham: My quarry is Simcoe. That’s all I care about.

& Paula: Apparently he’s a bit of a handful, a real bad egg. I mean, if you look at his file, you’ll see that for yourself. We’re talking disobedience, stealing, spitting, running away, throwing rocks, kicking stuff, defacing stuff, burning stuff, loitering and graffiti. And that’s just the stuff we know about.

& Paula: Who’s that Crocodile Dundee guy over there?

& Hec: You ever worked on a farm before or you just... ornamental?

& Ricky: Is there anything you want me to do?
    Hec: Yeah... leave me alone.

& Bella: What are you gonna call him?
Ricky: Um, still thinking. Something fierce to reflect its true nature. Either Psycho, Megatron... or Tupac.

& Minister: You know, sometimes in life, it seems like there’s no way out... like a sheep trapped in a maze designed by wolves. And you know that if you’re ever in that situation, there are always two doors to choose from. And through the first door... Oh, it’s easy to get through that door and on the other side waiting for you are all the nummiest treats you can imagine. Fanta, Doritos, L&P, Burger Rings, Coke Zero... But you know what? There’s also another door, not the Burger Ring door, not the Fanta door; another door that’s harder to get through. Guess what’s on the other side?.. Anyone want to take a guess?...
    Ricky: Vegetables?

& Minister: N-No, not vegeta... No. You would think Jesus. I thought Jesus the first time I-I-I-I came across that door. It’s not Jesus. It’s another door. And guess what’s on the other side of that door?...
    — Jesus?
Minister: Jesus. Yeah, Jesus. He’s tricky like that, Jesus. So let us pray, to Jesus, please, and make it a bit easier to get through those doors, uh, to find you and your bounty of delicious confectionary.

& Ricky: Maybe you could... write a haiku to express your feelings.
    Hec: A what?
    Ricky: Lost in the forest.
                A sore ankle, poor uncle.
                Oh well, never mind.

& Ricky: What if we just keep living here, and if they try to take the farm, we’ll just have a shootout, like Scarface... Except we don’t have any cocaine.

& Ricky: Yeah, but how? With what?
Hec: Oh, I don’t know. The knack.
Ricky: Oh yeah, the knack. What’s that? How do you get it?
Hec: It’s not a thing. It’s just... You just get it. It’s a... Oh, it’s a way of, um... it’s a way of figuring things out without having to think too hard or... or talk, more importantly.

& Hec: You know, most people who die in the bush... they’re found naked.
    Ricky: Ew.
Hec: Yeah, they panic, and they think their clothes are slowing them down. They throw them away, and then the cold gets to them. But the trick is... this is the knack... you stay calm, you look for water, you follow it to high ground until you can see what’s going on.

& Hec: Yeah. Shit just got real!

& Hec: Have fun. Don’t go wandering just stick to the tracks. If you get desperate... eat your dog.
    Ricky: What?!
Hec: You’ll be right, mate. Just bloody well come back, OK?

& Ricky: What would Uncle do? What would Uncle do?... Oh yes. Yes! Find water, and then go to higher ground. And don’t get naked.

& Ricky: Do you think we’ve walked a thousand miles yet? Like the wildebeest?
Hec: Well, it feels like it, eh?
Ricky: Yeah. Always on the move, always on the lookout for hunters, just like the wildebeest, except humans. We’re... Wilderpeople.
    Hec: Yeah, that’s us.

& Hec: ..... What?!
Ricky: I was trying to tell you it was like The Lord of the Rings.

& Psycho Sam: Bastards! That’s the typical government. Always trying to step on the little guy just for living his life. It never stops either. That’s why I can’t go back. Not going to be part of the machine. Form fillers.
    Ricky: Form fillers?
Psycho Sam: That’s how they get you. Anything you want to do in life, you got to fill out a form. And they’ve got forms for everything. You fill it out, it goes upstairs, and then they make you fill out a new form, just to confirm it was you that filled out the first form. And if ever you want to stop filling out forms, well, there’s about five different forms for that.

& Psycho Sam: Don’t even get me started on the national rugby team. They’re not human.

& Ricky: I didn’t choose the skux life; the skux life chose me.

What the Health

& Kip: The World Health Organization classifies processed meat as a Group One carcinogen, the same group as cigarettes, asbestos and plutonium, and classifies red meat as a Group Two carcinogen. Was this like I had essentially been smoking my entire childhood?

& Kip: Government and media almost exclusively blame lack of exercise and sugary foods as a cause of diabetes. .... What role does sugar play in causing diabetes?
Dr. Neal Barnard: Driving me crazy. Diabetes is not and never was caused be eating a high carbohydrate diet, and it’s not caused by eating sugar. The cause of diabetes is a diet that builds up the amount of fat into the blood. I’m talking about a typical meat-based, animal-based diet.

& Kip: Is chicken better?
    — It’s a question of whether you wanna be shot or, hung. The flesh food that I would eliminate from the American diet would be poultry, would be turkey and chicken.<
Kip: A brilliant advertising campaign has convinced people that oh, it’s white meat, it’s healthier.
    — The leading source of Sodium, in the American diet for adults is chicken.

& Kip: So, this old notion that somehow milk is gonna build strong bones or protect your bones later in life, it’s a myth.
    — People that drink milk have higher rates of hip fractures, have more cancer and live shorter lives.

& Breast cancer can be prevented with a healthy diet and lifestyle, but, we’re not. We’re talking about pink ribbons and putting all the money into research for the cure.

& The strategy is not on making their products any safer. The strategy is to just try to confuse the public, to introduce doubt.
There’s a famous tobacco industry memo. It’s called doubt is our product. That’s all they had to do. They didn’t have to convince Americans that smoking was healthy. They just had to introduce doubt. Then they would win.
If there’s just enough controversy, people kind of throw up their hands, «I don’t know what to eat.»
    Confusion is their game.

& Kip: Most people in the world are lactose intolerant... Why would your body create this enzyme, just lactose after weaning, after infancy, it doesn’t make any sense. 73% of African Americans are lactose intolerant. 95% of Asians, roughly 70% of Native Americans, and about 53% of Hispanic Americans are lactose intolerant.

& Kip: I had been a hardcore cheese-aholic virtually my entire life, despite the risks. But, like so many others, I seem to have been addicted to it.
    — It turns out that the casein protein, that’s the main protein in dairy products, and particularly in cheese, it breaks apart in the human digestion to create what are called casopmorphins.
Casein-derived, morphine-like compounds that go to the brain and they attach to the very same receptor that heroin attaches to. Don’t get me wrong, they’re not as strong as that, but, they are strong enough to make you come back again and again and again despite the fact that you’re gaining weight, you’re more unhealthy than you’ve ever been, but, that cheese just calls out to people.

& Kip: In internal documents uncovered by Dr. Greger, the USDA admitted that eggs cannot legally be called nutritious, low fat, part of a balanced diet, low calorie, healthful, healthy, can’t say it’s good for you or, even safe. Yet they still promote these products to the American people through federal checkoff programs.

& Kip: So, McDonald’s, for instance, has six people staffed full-time, according to records we found, whose salaries are paid for by this government program but, funded by the producers who are regulated by it. And these six people sit there at McDonald’s headquarters and just come up with ideas.
    — Triple cheese decker McCheese muffin stuffed bacon cheese slider?..
    — ... With extra cheese? ....
    — The Wendy’s Bacon Double Cheeseburger!
    Kip: Government program.
    — The steak fajita at Dunkin’ Donuts!
    Kip: Government program.

& Kip: In the US, treating chronic disease, such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes is a $1.5 trillion industry. That’s the GDP equivalent of the 10th richest country in the world.

& — First of all, all protein is made by plants. I’ll state that again for the record. All protein is initially made by plants, all of it. And it is not necessary to eat animal tissue in order to get protein. Only plants have the ability to actually take nitrogen from the air, break those molecules apart and incorporate that nitrogen into amino acids and then make protein. Any protein you get from an animal is simply recycled plant protein.

& — 2,000 calories of brown rice and broccoli is gonna be about 80 grams of protein a day, including the essential amino acids that you need in order to maintain optimum health.

& — And you hear this a lot in body builders who are like, «Well, I need chicken, or, I need fish to be strong, to build muscle tissue.» That is utter nonsense. The largest, strongest terrestrial animals on the planet are all herbivores. The biggest, strongest animals are all herbivores.

& — Gorillas, rhinos and elephants, they all get their muscles and strength from eating plants. That’s what I do.

House of Cards 5×6

Chapter 58

& Claire: I, Claire Hale Underwood, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States...
Underwood: I’m proud of her. She deserves this. Even if it only lasts for a couple of weeks.
Claire: ...And will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, so help me God.
    Underwood: Congratulations, Madam Acting President.

& Underwood: You have to now carry this with you at all times.
    Claire: The codes?
    Underwood: Mmm-hmm. It’s the law.

& Claire: You are in violation of the Antarctic Treaty System...
President Petrov: A treaty the USSR signed in 1959. We’re a new country.

& Underwood: American democracy is stronger than your sad attempt to take advantage of a bump in the road.
President Petrov: Oh, Francis, my eyes are on a landscape that is so much bigger than any one of your roads...

& Yates: I’m not talking about him. I’m talking about you.
Claire: What difference does it make whether I’m enjoying myself or not?
Yates: Isn’t that what this is all about? Can’t you just... live in it for a second?

& Yates: You could wake up tomorrow... and... I don’t know, feed the children... start a war...

& Conway: I’m not gonna beg.
    Usher: No, you’re gonna smile.

& Underwood: Bob, there’s no precedent here. There’s no playbook. We can look to the Constitution for inspiration, but not for instruction.

& Underwood: Look. Look at them... That is the look of contemplating loss. Loss... the only constituent that anyone in this room really listens to.

& Claire: Isn’t that right, Mr. President?
    Underwood: Absolutely, Madam President.

& President Petrov: There are no Russian troops in Antarctica.

& Durant: How long do you expect the world to believe those aren’t your soldiers?
President Petrov: Do you like working for the Underwoods? How loyal are you?

& President Petrov: You will allow me to exploit whatever oil I find in Antarctica. And I’ll tell you why. I have something. Or rather, someone you need...

& Claire: I thought you saw what I saw.
Underwood: I did. I do. We’re perfectly in sync, Claire.
