You Mean All This Time We Could Have Been Friends?

Feud 1×8

& Dentist: ...And by my count, you’re missing six molars?
    Joan Crawford: Extractions.
Dentist: What kind of medieval dental practice extracts six teeth without putting in implants?
Joan Crawford: I did it when I was 23. It’s called «the buckle.» When you remove the back teeth, your cheeks curve in at a more elegant angle.

& Dentist: Why the heck would you do that?
Joan Crawford: My agent told me if I wanted to work past 25, I should invest in a set of cheekbones. You can’t catch their eye if you can’t catch the light, so I did the buckle. It was not uncommon.

& Joan Crawford: Well, you know what they say about stars. They’re like Christmas trees. Once the lights are off, you sit there and watch the needles drop.

& Joan Crawford: A denture... No. I’ll do the surgery if I have to, but no dentures. I’d rather spit blood into a sink than look like Martha Raye.

& Dentist: Miss Crawford, at your age, you need to worry more about staying healthy than staying photogenic.
Joan Crawford: I’ll stop worrying about how I look when they dip me in formaldehyde.

& Stan: ...And if the book is a hit, potentially, it’s a huge branding opportunity. Joan Crawford luggage, Joan Crawford dinnerware, Joan Crawford plastic furniture covers...
Joan Crawford: I would love that.

& Joan Crawford: Trog? What is Trog?
Freddie Francis: Oh, as in troglodyte. Trog... it’s the title of the movie.
Joan Crawford: I thought the picture was entitled The Missing Link.
Freddie Francis: We changed it to pop out on the posters. Picture it: Trog!...
Joan Crawford: And what is that?
Freddie Francis: Oh, uh, your co-star. Trog.

&’This is Joan Crawford. Let’s begin with my point of view. I always say, treasure yourself.
I do a certain amount of self-pampering. I surround myself with happy colors.
I sit on hard chairs. Soft ones spread the hips.
People ask me if I turn up at board meetings wearing tailored costumes and muted colors. Oh, no. I wear shocking pink and lovely hats. No man ever did a poor job because he had an attractive woman to look at...
I mistrust people who don’t like animals...
There are no hard and fast rules for fending off an outright pass, especially if it comes from the boss. Every intelligent woman has her own method of turning it down without wounding a sensitive male ego. An even cleverer woman knows how to prevent the pass in the first place.
If you can’t control your cleavage, your perfume, your walk and your eyelashes, you’d better stay out of the business...
Here are a few items no dieter should ever have in the house: peas, lima beans, avocadoes, olives, dried beans, corn, butter, most cheese. Creamed chicken with mash potatoes makes too much mush. Always serve something crisp with something soft...
All the beauty products in the world can’t disguise a disagreeable expression. Have you ever noticed that when you say, «no,» you resemble a prune-faced schoolmarm?...
I feel as if clothes are people. When I buy a dress, that’s a new friend. I have a tremendous respect for fabrics...
I love people. I’ve been asked if I ever go around in disguise. Never! I want to be recognized. When I hear people say, «There’s Joan Crawford,» I turn around and say, «Hi. How are you?»‘

& Joan Crawford: Is that really how I look?.. Well, if that’s how they see me, they’ll never see me again.

& Pauline: You know, in Japan, when you turn 60, you put on this bright red hat, and you celebrate kanreki. It’s your second childhood. Life isn’t over. It’s just beginning.

& Victor Buono: Nothing good can come from comparing yourself.

& Victor Buono: You and she have so much in common. You’re both Aries. You’re both single mothers to angry children. You’ve each been married four times. In many ways, I hate to say this, but... she may be the only person in the entire world who knows how you really feel right now.

& Joan Crawford: I spent my whole life being Joan Crawford. A woman I created for others. I don’t know who-who I am when I’m by myself.

& Jack Warner: Now, Joanie, look, look, if I... if I really had known how hard I-I’d really made it for you, I... I wouldn’t have done a fucking thing different...

& Jack Warner: It all works out in the end, Joanie. You know, we showbiz folks, you know, all that anger that we feel from not being loved... which is the reason we’re in this business in the first place... all the tears and the screaming and the-the rage, it all disappears. And the public, what they remember, for the most part, is the good stuff. The work. And all the joy that we brought them. Trust me, all the suffering will have been worth it.
    Joan Crawford: Will it, really?

& Jan Tomlinson, AP Wire Service: Joan Crawford died this morning. Do you have a comment?
Bette Davis: My mother always said don’t say anything bad about the dead. Only say good... Joan Crawford is dead. Good.

& Joan Blondell: That’s it? Christ. 50 years in show business, and they give her two seconds.
Bette Davis: That’s all any of us will get. To Joan.

& Joan Crawford: Bette? Here’s what I really hope from this picture when all is said and done: I hope I’ve made a new friend...
    Bette Davis: ...Me, too.

& Maeby: ...And if you do my Spanish, I’ll teach you how to French.

& Maeby: So first my parents don’t notice that I drowned, and now my cousin doesn’t care that I’m at the height of my sexuality.

& Narrator: ...where she found out why her mother wasn’t at the graduation that Maeby also wasn’t not at.

& Michael: Actually, have you told her about your software?.. He’s got this privacy software. Keeps people from stealing your stuff— tell her, pal.
Maeby: So it’s privacy software that’s also antipiracy? Do you have a way of doing this?
George Michael: Well, it’s just a Boolean-driven aggregation, really, of what programmers call «hacker-traps...»

& Michael: I don’t understand a word of it, but it works. You should see his Facebook page. Doesn’t have a friend on it.

& Maeby: You know what? I think I will do better once I get a little Mexican in me.

& Maeby: I’m actually getting the lifetime achievement Opie tonight.
Mort Meyers: I’m very sorry. No, they only give that award away to somebody after they die or, even worse, after your career is dead.

& Maeby: I just got a lifetime achievement award. I’m finished.

& Rebel: So what is this? Is this another one of these social networking things? Because I am so over those. I tried to deactivate my Facebook profile. It’s easier to get out of Scientology.

& Maeby: Is that still happening? I got to tell you, I think movies are dead. Maybe it’s a TV show...

& Maeby: He’s a bully, so I want you to «bad cop» him for me a little, okay?

& Maeby: Oh, God. I’m gonna have to live in Sudden Valley.

With or Without You

Billions 2×10

& Axelrod: You. Of all people, you know precisely what response you’re eliciting. If you do it, you mean to do it.

& Minchak: I’ve done, uh, first couple levels, the dirty stuff those pop-up ads promised to find on your high-school sweetheart.
    Chuck: Those websites actually work?
    Minchak: More than they should.

& Minchak: Tomorrow starts the deep dive, your receipts, browser history, interviewing those who have known you intimately since school days.
    Chuck: Jesus.
    Minchak: It’s a shit show.

& Minchak: I’m gonna run through a list of areas. You’ll let me know... if we have an issue.

& Minchak: Aborted pregnancies?.. Uh, unwanted sexual advances in the workplace?.. Fiscal malfeasance?.. Hiring of undocumented workers?.. Cheating?.. Same-sex exploration... Membership of racially-exclusive clubs?.. Okay. Let’s get personal.

& Taylor: I like nightmares. When I wake up, they leave me deeply valuing my reality.

& Axelrod: She left me a note. «You lied to me.»
Wags: Fuck. How you gonna figure out what she’s referring to?
Axelrod: I already know ’cause it was the only one.
Wags: You truly are a black swan.

& Bryan: Taylor Mason took my card. Cautiously optimistic, that she’s gonna... I’m not used to this gender pronoun thing yet... that they’ll reach out.

& Axelrod: And then I flipped totally to the other extreme. To Paris. That rainy night. We wouldn’t get out of bed even though the iPod was playing «With or Without You» on repeat, and so we ended up listening to it all night....

& Chuck: More prominent than I?
Mistress: Should come as no surprise to you the lifestyle attracts brilliant people. Intricate temperaments. Intricate tastes.

& Axelrod: I’m limited to waiting now, and you know the problem with that?
    Wendy: You fucking hate waiting.

& Axelrod: Just say the word, and I’ll erase Wendy Rhoades from our world forever.

& Axelrod: I know how my employees think. You’re saying I don’t anymore?
Taylor: You don’t anymore. Companies get bigger, modes of governance and delegation need to change to keep pace, or... you get this.

& Axelrod: Congratulations. All the analysts now answer to you.

& Bryan: I’m just gonna come out and ask. Is there anything you see at Axe Capital that offends your sense of fairness, of right and wrong?
Taylor: What are you asking about? Fairness or right and wrong?

& Taylor: A stock is like a living organism, a sparrow, say. And we are able to create an emergent-based abstraction of that sparrow, which closely approximates the sparrow itself, accounting for migration patterns, wind, weather, and other variables. We can create a similar abstraction of a stock, combining the information from the specific ETFs which represent its underlying dependencies. And if we apply this to the stock, we can predict its delta, following the path of its abstracted self because nature follows abstraction.
Bryan: I’m sorry. You lost me. Let’s start again. You sure you don’t want a cookie?

& Kate: How’d that go?
    Bryan: I’m no Ed Harris.

& Axelrod: Come on, they can wait five minutes. Quick catch up.
Bruno: You’re my business partner. So you get the slice and a Coke on the arm. But that don’t buy you a conversation with me.

& Axelrod: You think I can’t control this, or you? That you’re teaching me some, some fucking lesson? I teach the fucking lessons, and you are about to get one!

& Boyd: Bobby. How are you?
Axelrod: Frankly, I’ve had better days. But given your circumstances... I’ve got no business complaining.

& Richard: It’s... It’s iodine. I’ve been... biting my nails, so I put this on there to stop me from doing it. Looks like Cheetos, tastes like asshole.

& Richard: Yes. This is the amazing new company PiperChat.

& VC: You need funding? Hit a million daily active users while sustaining the same kind of growth, then everybody in town will be trying to kidnap you. Problem solved.

& VC: I’m sorry. Is it hard to become a billionaire? Welcome to the Valley, assholes.

& Richard: The reason why we stayed up for two days was to maximize our ability to get a million users, and I just did that. Because who doesn’t want 10 percent better image quality?
Dinesh: Who doesn’t want it? Everyone. Everyone doesn’t want it!
Gilfoyle: We already have the best video chat. People are using this on their cellphones. They’re not gonna be able to tell the fucking difference.

& Dinesh: You built the video chat, I’ll give you that. Okay. You did, but you did it using my algorithm.
Richard: Right, like when Picasso painted a masterpiece, the guy who made the brushes and the paint deserved all the credit, right?

& Gavin: Here to you, Jack, and to your Hooli/Endframe box becoming the most successful American data storage appliance to ever be manufactured in China.

& Gavin: Watch your back, Jeff Bezos, here comes Hooli.

& Richard: As I said, the tech is great and all the guys are really behind it.
Ross: But you’re not behind it, Richard. I can tell, and as much as you want to be, you’re not. It’s like this. You’re trying to date a woman, but deep down in your heart you know you’re gay.

& Ross: All right. Let’s do an exercise. You’ve got unlimited time and resources, you can build anything in the world you want with your compression, anything at all, what’s it gonna be? Three, two, one, go. Go, go, go.
Richard: You said I have unlimited time?

& Richard: Okay. I own a telescope...
    Ross: Of course you do.
Richard: ...and I brought it out one night to look at the full moon.
    Ross: Of course you did.
Richard: And I got to thinking... «Wow, we put a man on the moon using the computing power of a handheld calculator.» And then I thought, «Okay... there’s literally millions of times more computing power in my phone and that’s just sitting in my pocket doing nothing.» Right?....

& Ross: You wanna build a new Internet?

& Dinesh: Gilfoyle... can I please be CEO of Pied Piper?
Gilfoyle: Spoken like a true leader.

& Richard: Think you can do that?
Jared: I’ve always been very adept at taking the shape of whatever shoe was pressed down upon me, so I can try to make it work.

Genius

& Max Perkins: Please tell me it’s double-spaced.
    Assistant: No such luck.

& Assistant: Every other publisher in town has already turned it down.
Max Perkins: Is it any good?
Assistant: Good? No. But it’s unique.

& Zippy Perkins: That’s a very long paragraph.
Max Perkins: It started four pages ago.

& Max Perkins: You’re too young to be in love.
Zippy Perkins: How old do you have to be?
    Max Perkins: Forty.

& Thomas Wolfe: So I’m looking at that man now. Well, congratulations. On finding one genius. Two, if you count Hemingway. As for this one, he’ll persevere.

& Thomas Wolfe: We are not those characters we want to be. We’re those characters we are. I’m Caliban. That island creature, monstrous and deformed. Caliban. So ugly. So alien. Hurt and shunned into poetry.

& Thomas Wolfe: It’s about America. All of it.
I’m trying to capture everything. Every city and village and stone and leaf and man and child. And every farm and flower, every river. It’s about the one acetylene torch, white, bright truth that burns in the heart of every man in this country.
And that is the search for a true father. I don’t mean biological father. I’m not talking about sperm. I mean, I search for the need of a father of our spirit. It’s about every single thing that makes this country great.
    It’s mammoth!

& Thomas Wolfe: Max says the only ideas worth writing about are the big ideas.
Max Perkins: Big ideas, fewer words.
Thomas Wolfe: You see, I’m lost without him.

& Max Perkins: Have you thought about another title?
    Thomas Wolfe: You’ll hate it.

& Louise Perkins: Have you read Tom’s book, Mrs. Bernstein?
Aline Bernstein: Yes, Mrs. Perkins, it’s dedicated to me.
Thomas Wolfe: I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my sweet jewess. She bought the paper and the pencils. And paid for the typist... She put a roof over my head and food in my prodigious belly.

& Thomas Wolfe: I have it.
    Max Perkins: You have it?
    Thomas Wolfe: The new book.
    Max Perkins: With you?
    Thomas Wolfe: Yes.
Max Perkins: Well, let’s have it.
Thomas Wolfe: Bring it in, guys.

& Max Perkins: Now, to begin, on page one.
Thomas Wolfe: Oh, lord. Page one?

& Max Perkins: Now, look here, you’ve given 80 pages to Eugene on the platform before the train arrives. That is, perhaps, gilding the Lily a bit as to suspense? I mean, I’ll only wait so long for a train.

& Thomas Wolfe: «Eugene saw a woman. Her eyes were blue. So quickly did he fall for her that no one in the room even heard the sound.» Period. End of chapter four.
Max Perkins: Only 98 more to go!

& Max Perkins: Tom, we discussed a transition line. One line to bridge the cut. You’ve given me 50 new pages on the doctor. You’ve given me his whole life story and his father’s whole life story.
Thomas Wolfe: I like the doctor.
Max Perkins: Well, so do I. I adore the doctor. But by god, 50 pages?

& Thomas Wolfe: Some books are supposed to be long, you know? Thank Christ Tolstoy never met you. We’d have that great novel War and Nothing.

& Max Perkins: It’s my job, it’s what I do.
Louise Perkins: Every minute of every day?
Max Perkins: And if it takes years, it takes years.
Louise Perkins: You’re never going to get this time back.
Max Perkins: It’s one damn vacation, for Christ’s sake! Louise, a writer like Tom, I get one in a lifetime.
Louise Perkins: You get your daughters for the same lifetime.

& Thomas Wolfe: Come on! There must be one song you like.
Max Perkins: Flow gently, sweet Afton... I’m partial to Flow gently, sweet Afton.

& Thomas Wolfe: The whole thing about jazz is that these fellas are artists. They interpret the song, letting the music pour on out, riff upon riff, just like I do with words. To hell with standard forms. To hell with Flaubert and Henry James. Be original. Hmm? Blaze new trails. That’s the whole ugly gorilla.
Max Perkins: Ugly gorilla. Of course.

& Max Perkins: Editors should be anonymous. More than that, there’s always the fear that I deformed your book. Who’s to say it wasn’t the way it was meant to be when you first brought it in? War and peace. Not just war.
That’s what we editors lose sleep over, you know? Are we really making books better? Or just making them different?

& Aline Bernstein: So, I don’t exist anymore. I’ve been edited.

& Aline Bernstein: I am very sorry for what’s going to happen to you... Enjoy the time with Tom while you have it because after him... there is a great hush.

& Max Perkins: I think back in the caveman days, our ancestors would huddle around the fire at night and wolves would be howling in the dark, just beyond the light. And one person would start talking. And he would tell a story, so we wouldn’t be so scared in the dark.

& Max Perkins: ... And then maybe all your words will be worth five of Scott’s.

& Thomas Wolfe: More and more, I trouble myself with that. «The legacy.» Will anyone care about Thomas Wolfe in 100 years? Ten years?
    F. Scott Fitzgerald: When I was young, I asked myself that question every day. Now, I ask myself, «can I write one good sentence?»

& Max Perkins: The surgeon said his brain was filled with tumors. A myriad of tumors. That’s the word he used, «myriad.» I think Tom would like that. .... The plural of «myriad» is «myriads», by the way.

& Phil: So, why birds and bees? Well, ’cause they’re famously known as the horniest of the flight animals. You following me so far? Okay, well, here’s where it gets a little funky and a little cool. So the bird takes his, uh, «mm» and, uh, uh, puts it in the bee’s «hmm.» Know what I’m saying? Yeah. And so anyway, they just keep them in there and they just move them around, uh, for what’s usually a very, very short period of time. Right? And, uh, that’s the birds and bees talk. Yeah. God, thought it’d be harder than that.

& Phil: Melissa, would you mind wandering around like a zombie somewhere else, please?

& Phil: Oh, you probably don’t even know what a zombie is. Well... you know when someone dies? Well, a zombie is a corpse that comes back to life. And they’re terrifying. I mean, they have an insatiable appetite for human flesh, and they just keep coming after you and after you, till they get you. And they’re so fast.

& Carol: I just don’t understand not talking. Whenever I have the urge to not talk, I talk about it.

& Gail: Couldn’t find my gun, so I used the car.

Carol: And I’m Lady Liberty-Patrick-Cupid-Claus. And tonight’s your night, bro. Behold!

& Carol: Over the next four days...
    Gail: Four days?
Carol: We are going to overwhelm the pleasure centers of your brain, tantalizing you with one magical holiday after another, and pushing you to your celebratory brink.
    Gail: Four freakin’ days?

& Erica: Oh, Carol, you’re fine.

& Erica: Are they gonna go?

& Todd: Hey, Tandy, soup’s on. Huh? Tonight’s special: cream of your face.

The Nice Guys

& Jackson Healy: There’s something wrong with kids today. They know too much.

& Holland March: Love. Grand, isn’t it? I was in love once. Marriage is buying a house for someone you hate. Remember that.

& Jackson Healy: «Equanimity. The quality of being calm and even-tempered...» He accepted her betrayal with equanimity.

& Jackson Healy: You pissed me off. You made an enemy.

& Holland March: Let me tell you what two days of detective work looks like, okay? You drive around like an asshole. You’re gonna spend half the time interviewing the fucking Chets of the world. You spend the other half trying to translate fuckwit to English. And when it’s over, the only thing that’s changed is that the sun went down twice.
Jackson Healy: And nothing ever works out, is that what you’re trying to say?
    Holland March: Never.
Jackson Healy: But you get paid.
    Holland March: Sometimes.

& Holly March: Dad, there’s like whores here and stuff.
Holland March: Sweetheart, how many times have I told you? Don’t say «and stuff.» Just say, «Dad, there are whores here.»

Holland March: A guy without his balls. It’s a Munich.
Jackson Healy: Munich is a city in Germany. München. Munich.
    Holland March: You sure?
Jackson Healy: My dad was stationed there.
Holland March: Right... Hitler only had one ball.

& Holland March: I’m gonna need you to drive. I’m gonna pull over up here.
Jackson Healy: You don’t have to pull over. The car can drive itself.
    Holland March: What?
Jackson Healy: Just take your hands off the wheel, man.
Holland March: Hmm... I didn’t know it could do that.
Jackson Healy: Where you been, man? Every car can do this.

& Holland March: .... And that would be the cops.

& Gob: Well, it’d be sort of a, a father-son thing at a gay club. Well, technically gay night at a magic club.

& Gob: Who’s the dumbwaiter now?

& Tony Wonder: Did somebody say Wonder?

& Gob: Yeah, that makes sense. I use a mask myself, in my act. But you have to tell me how you do that bean bag trick.
Tony Wonder: Well, I guess, since you’re a magician, too. But not a word of this... I did use a mask.

& Gob: Wait a minute... you know of other people with similar needs?
Tobias: Oh, I have a list of men that could fill every opening you have.

& Tony Wonder’s Voicemail: ’It’s Tony. I’m not here right now, because I’m right behind you... Made you look. But how did I know you looked? Because I’m right behind you!... Made you look again.’

& Gob: Siri, where is the Little Ballroom?
    Siri: I have three matches.
Gob: I’m going to need the gayest.
Siri: Did you say the «grayest»?

& Michael: Mom told me you were bragging about seeing somebody in showbiz. Then I see a frozen dove in a freezer.
    Gob: That could be anything.
Michael: It said «Love each other» on the foot band.
Gob: Yeah, that does sound like one of mine.

& Michael: Are we done? I’m just surprisingly tired.
Gob: So tired... and so not hurt.

& Narrator: The hours melted away... and perhaps, pretending to be gay... allowed them the freedom to speak honestly.

& Tony: You know, I think I got into misdirection ’cause I just... maybe I was trying to hide my feelings or something.
Gob: I was just doing it to get out of gym.
    Tony: Who’s Jim?

& Tony: Why can’t I just be me and you wear the Gob mask?

Naomi: We took it out of a torpedo a while back. A good Belter never throws anything away.

& Amos: It was nice not having to worry about being on the right team.

& Naomi: Keep your eyes down.
Dr. Meng: This isn’t my first time in a space suit.
Naomi: It’s your first time in space, with no ground, no sky, and no horizon. Eyes down.

& Alex: Firing up the barbecue!

& Holden: How bad could it be?

& Naomi: I don’t ever remember a time when Earth, Mars and the Belt weren’t fighting. The sides change sometimes. What we think we’re fighting for. Who we tell ourselves are the good people. But it just seems we can’t ever stop fighting war after war after war. It’s part of being human. An ugly part, but I don’t think it will ever change. Technology certainly hasn’t changed it. Guns. Railguns. Nuclear bombs. No weapon ever brings peace.

& Naomi: Protomolecule... It’s part of the equation now, and it will be from now on. We can’t change that. We can’t wish it away.

    Lou: Don’t say «potential!»
Will: Potential. You need to widen your horizons, Clark. You only get one life. It’s actually your duty to live it as fully as possible.

& Akela: Let me hear the Law.
The Pack: «This is the Law of the Jungle... as old and as true as the sky. The Wolf that keeps it will prosper... but the Wolf that breaks it will die. Like the creeper that girdles the tree trunk... the Law runneth over and back. For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf... and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.»

& Baloo: Kid, kid, kid. Try to understand this. I’m a bear. It means that I have to eat my weight... every day... for hibernation purposes. I know I’m asking for a lot... but I don’t climb and you do... Look, I really need your help. Winter’s coming.

& Fred: Just put some honey on those.

& Joan Crawford: I need to process your note, Bob... In my trailer.

& Victor Buono: Well, I remember seeing her in Humoresque. Shunned by John Garfield, marching into the ocean, every hair in place. Beauty, dignity and death, all in one exquisite pose. She marched into the sea to her death...
Bette Davis: ...and never got her hair wet.
Victor Buono: Well... It meant a lot to me.

& Bette Davis: I wanted to hear [Jack Warner’s] reaction. Did he see my talent, my humor, my intelligence, my brave attack on the scene? But he wasn’t interested in any of that. Guess what he said.
Robert Aldrich: What did he say?
Bette Davis: He said I had zero sex appeal. He said, «Who would want to fuck that?...» I was 22. And nobody ever had.
Robert Aldrich: You should go to bed.
Bette Davis: Guess who he said he wished I looked like?.. Joan Crawford.

& Bette Davis: Joan... How did it feel to be the most beautiful girl in the world?
Joan Crawford: It was wonderful. The most joyous thing you could ever imagine... And it was never enough.... Well, what about you? How did it feel to be the most talented girl in the world?
Bette Davis: Great... And it was never enough.

& Joan Crawford: Driver. I’m not going to Brentwood. Take me to Cedars-Sinai Hospital. I’m suddenly feeling very, very ill.

& Joan Crawford: And, really, her entrance into the picture? Oh, it’s all wrong. A taxi cab, Bob? No.
Robert Aldrich: Well, how about a flying carpet?

& Robert Aldrich: You know, Joan, the last time I let an actor call all the shots, I made 4 for Texas. I can’t afford another bomb. If Charlotte doesn’t work, I’m back making crap TV. So I suggest you put down your fucking script and pick up your fucking contract and give that a close fucking read. Tomorrow morning, 7:00 a.m., and not a minute later.

& Robert Aldrich: You know what, Bette? Being right doesn’t mean shit if you’re driving talent off the stage. You want to be a producer? Well, a producer gets results. You want to be a lion tamer? Great. Go tame the goddamn lion.

& B.D. Merrill: I just don’t see why we have to make such a big production out of the wedding.
Bette Davis: Well, I’ll tell you why. A wedding is a big, special party because everything after that is hard work and repetition. It’s work to keep a house. It’s work to fix him the same goddamn glass of scotch every night and feign interest while he rants about his boss. It’s work to tolerate his forgetting to ask you about your day, and your feelings, and your thoughts. And it’s work to feel like a staging ground for someone else’s ambitions.
B.D. Merrill: You just described my life with you.
Bette Davis: Well, then I’ve prepared you to be a good wife.

& Bette Davis: I want it to be perfect. Your first wedding is the one that you remember the most.
B.D. Merrill: My first wedding? Jeremy and I are forever!
Bette Davis: Of course, darling, I... Of course. And however long that forever lasts, I want you know that you will always have a place to come home to.

& Joan Blondell: Let me tell you something. At a certain point, a woman becomes invisible. You get fat or old... people don’t even see you anymore... Oh, come on, think of it this way: you’ve been eating in a restaurant your whole life. You’re a great customer. Good tipper. Staff loves you. You spend all your money there. And then one day, they won’t serve you. Won’t take your money. Won’t even let you see the menu. Well, who could blame you for wanting to stand up and rip the tablecloth off?

Louis C.K. 2017

& I don’t think it’s killing a baby. I don’t. I mean, it is, it’s a little bit... It’s a little bit killing a baby. It’s a little bit... It’s 100% killing a baby. It’s totally killing a whole baby. But I think that women should be allowed to kill babies. That’s what I think. They should be allowed to kill babies.

& You know, like, when people say, abortion should be legal, safe and rare. Why rare if it should be legal? If it should be legal, it’s... It’s shitting. If it should be rare, it’s murdering babies. But, again, women should be allowed because...

& Two reasons I think women should be allowed to kill babies.
Number one, I don’t think life is that important. It’s just not. It is not.

& Life is okay. I like life. I like it. I don’t need it. I’d be fine without it. I like life, though. I do. You know how much I like life? I have never killed myself. That’s how much I like it. ... I like it precisely enough to not kill myself.

& The second reason is because that’s their job. Women have to decide who lives and dies. That’s because they’re the female of the species. In the reproductive arena, that’s what the female does. They are the selectors. They have to decide this.

& «But when is it okay? When should they be allowed?»
When it’s in their pussy. That whole time.
It’s in her pussy. If there’s a dude in your pussy, you get to kill him. I think that’s pretty fundamental. You’re allowed to kill people if they’re in your house.
    So... that’s what I think.

& Jesus.
We are counting the days since Jesus.Together.Which makes sense if you’re Christian. But what the fuck are the rest of us doing?
«Jesus was here. Jesus was here. Jesus was here.» Everybody. Scientists, historians. «Jesus. Jesus.» «Jesus plus two, Jesus plus three, Jesus plus four.»
Jesus plus 2017 years, four months and three days is when your license expires. How is that not a win for the Christians? How is that not a complete win?

& Here’s the thing... stereotypes are harmful. That’s the truth. But the voices are funny. And I don’t know how to reconcile those two facts. I enjoy doing the voices.

& Please. Please, don’t. You’re not gonna like it. You’re not gonna like where it’s going. I don’t recommend clapping at any things. You’ll regret it at the end of the thing.

& It bothered me. ’Cause here’s what the story of Achilles teaches me, is that, if you’re a parent, it’s never enough what you do for these motherfuckers. It’s just never enough. It’s still gonna be your fault.

& I just think when people die, it means they did their jobs. And you should forget them. That’s what I think. ’Cause it’s unfair what we put on dead people.
    «Are you watching over me?» «Yes, I’m watching all of it.»

& Everybody’s in a shitty thing. That’s what it is to be with somebody. You’re either alone, or you’re in a shitty thing. That covers 100% of human beings.

& I can see there’s young couples here. You’re like, «No, we’re in a good one... It’s really good.»
«Yeah, fuck you. Who do you think you are? It just didn’t get shitty yet. So arrogant.»
    «Yeah, I think we figured it out.»
«No... Yeah, you’re the first ones.» Of course it’s going to get shitty. That’s part of it.

& It’s like going to a horror movie, and in the first minute, you’re like, «I think they’re all gonna be fine.» No, they’re all gonna die. And you’re gonna hate the person you love right now. That’s the way it works. Love plus time minus distance equals hate. That’s just the way it goes.

& Is there any more disgusting modern human behavior than reading your own already sent e-mails?

& I’ve never watched the whole movie. I’ve never seen Magic Mike in its entirety. Because I don’t wanna see it. I don’t wanna see the end of Magic Mike. I know what the end of Magic Mike is. I’m pretty sure that the end of Magic Mike is that I’m gay. I’m pretty sure that’s how it ends.

& I want to stay like this. You know why? ’Cause I’m 49 years old. I don’t want to enter the gay community now. This is not the version of me that’s gonna have an awesome time as the new gay guy. So, fuck that. And that’s my right, by the way. Because that’s about me. That is my life. I’d never discriminate against another person for being gay. I wouldn’t dream of it. But I have every right to oppress and discriminate against my own possible budding homosexuality. That’s mine to just violently push down.

Sic Transit Imperium

Billions 2×9

& Axelrod: Thanks, Wags, but... really? You got me VR goggles? What, am I turning 13?
Wags: If you were, Uncle Wagsy would be getting you laid by the most beautiful call girl in the state. But you’re a big man having a big birthday, so the gift matches...

& Axelrod: Sic Transit Imperium...
    Wags: «So passes the empire.»

& Axelrod: If I were standing where you are, I’d be even more strident in my approach. But I’m standing here, so I have to be the opposite... reflective, calm, considered. It’s just about who I am at this precise moment in time.
Dollar Bill: What business are we in, hmm? I thought it was a business of profit, of free men and women, beyond the apparatchiks and their pathetic rules.
Axelrod: Yeah, all of that and «Who is John Galt?»

& Jack Foley: Well, if you’re thinking of having a meal before you leave, try the Garbage Plate. It’s a local delicacy.
Chuck: That looks hard to resist.
Jack Foley: You’ll hardly be able... Eat the shit out of it.

& Wags: You know what I hate?
    Axelrod: Fish, fowl, or mammal?
Wags: Learning something about myself. When is that bullshit just gonna stop?

& Stephanie: I guess he just didn’t want a witness anymore. Referred to himself as a Terminator.
    Kate: What does that mean?
Stephanie: A cybernetic organism, programmed to kill. Living tissue over robotic endoskeleton...
Kate: I’ve seen the movie. I just meant...
Stephanie: He has some sort of programmed mission, and I was standing in the way.

& Axelrod: I’m setting a course that needs to be acknowledged in all future stories about wherever we go next. Ayles may be what he is, but he speaks the nasal language of culture and credibility.
Wags: And you just bought that.
Ayles: It’s what all the great philanthropists did, wrote their names on the ages and laundered their reputations in the process. I’m keen to get started.

& Lara: The Arque?
Axelrod: Luxury survival bunker. It’s a scam.
Lara: Why does everything need to be a scam?
Axelrod: When the Armageddon comes, the doors will be locked.

& Axelrod: Half my life now is ass-covering and optics, fucking optics of everything from parties to put options.

& Lara: You know, if we don’t mark the milestones, we’re just passing with the time.

& Chuck: ... Either it’ll feel right or it won’t. But... you gotta jump in and find out.

& Chuck: Terminator?
Kate: Cyberdyne Systems, series 800, Resistance Infiltrator—
    Chuck: Got it.

& Axelrod: The moral of the story is... you get one life, so do it all.

& Jack Foley: Did I make a mistake with you? Are you fighting for inches or yards?

& Jack Foley: I don’t handcuff. ... But play out those dominoes first, and not just for Axe...

& Chuck: Motherfucker! This is what they do... How the fuck do you compete with something that powerful, that swims around for days on end, just waiting for the faintest smell of blood so it can attack without warning, and with all the ferocity and half the conscience of a goddamn bull shark?.. You can’t. Unless you can somehow anticipate where it will strike and then match its strength when it does... which you can’t.

& Chuck: Well, if this is what it takes...

& Wendy: It was the only way I could work there. I couldn’t keep seeing him. It wasn’t like doctor-patient or even athlete-coach. It was more Hannibal-Clarice...

& Axelrod: I forgot... where I’m from. I forgot that I don’t give a fuck about any of this. It’s all sailcloth held up with poles lit by lighting designers and ripped to the ground tomorrow. I wanna be with you. I wanna take you somewhere that matters.

& Angela Zamparo: You’re focused on the Islamic guys. I get it. We all create a narrative based on what we think is important. We see what we want to see. But just because you’re not looking at something... doesn’t mean it’s not there.

& Nate Foster: .... You’re talking about the Jew tax?
    Johnny: What’s the Jew tax?
    Vince Sargent: Tell ’em, Nate.
Nate Foster: Start looking at the food you buy, you’ll see this little «U.» The Union of Orthodox Rabbis gets paid to perform a «blessing» on everything in the grocery store. For this «blessing,» they rake in billions of dollars in taxes.
Vince Sargent: We can’t control the ketchup, but we can control the streets. That’s how it went down in Germany.

& Gerry Conway: You know how you spell love, Nate? T-I-M-E. Ninety percent of the time you’ll ever spend with your kids comes before the age of 12.

& Gerry Conway: Rallies, the speeches, the politics... That’s not how change is gonna come. It’s gonna come from the unknown soldiers, from the leaderless resistance.

& Angela Zamparo: When it comes down to it, there really is only one essential ingredient to fascism. It’s victimhood.

Σ nostradamvs: ...

Book of the Dead

& Hank: All I know is after I faced my first beast...
Monroe: Whoa, Hank, we’re right here.
    Hank: Sorry. My first Wesen.
Monroe: Not that some Wesen aren’t more bestial than others. Don’t get me wrong.

& Rosalee: If it really is the Beati Paoli, the less we’re involved, the better.
Monroe: I guess so. But we were gods once...

& Nick: You want me to kill him.
Alexander: You’re a Grimm. That’s what you do.

& Hank: This is really kind of touching... Except for the part where we helped them steal a 3,000-year-old mummy and burn it.
