Firefly × 9

& River: I don’t want it.
Simon: River, you have to eat. It’s good. It tastes like... It’s good.
    Jayne: It smells like crotch.

& Wash: So how long are you gonna be planetside?
Inara: Shouldn’t be more than a day or two.
Wash: Big stop just to renew your license to Companion... Can I use “companion” as a verb?

& Simon: River?!
River: He looks better in red.

& Malcolm: Patients were cynical, and not responding, and we couldn’t bring ’em back.
    Simon: They were cyanotic...
    Malcolm: They were cyanotic...
    Simon: And not responsive...
    Zoë: ...responsive.
Malcolm: And we were unable to...
    Simon: Resuscitate them.
    Zoë: Yes!
    Malcolm: Resuscitate!
    Zoë: Resuscitate them.

& Simon: If I didn’t know better, I’d say you’re ready to save some lives.
Malcolm: All we need are a couple of patients.
Simon: Corpses, actually. For this to work, River and I will have to be dead.
Jayne: I’m starting to like this plan.

& River: Copper for a kiss.

& Inara: What’s going on here?
Kaylee: Well, let’s see. We killed Simon and River, stole a bunch of medicine... and now the Captain and Zoe are off springing the others that got snatched by the feds.

& Malcolm: The next time you decide to stab me in the back... have the guts to do it to my face.
Jayne: ...... Can I come in?

& River: Is it time to go to sleep again?

& Kelly: We’re gonna finish that.
    Mac: We will finish that.
Kelly: FYI, we’re gonna do it in every room.
Mac: And this time, I’m going to ejaculate.

& Kelly: Just because we have a house and a baby doesn’t mean that we’re old people.
Mac: No. Fuck old people. Old people don’t fuck like we just did.
    Kelly: Baby, I nearly came.

& Mac: What’s nice about the house is that it looks like every penny we have is inside of it. So, at least it looks like it.
    Kelly: It’s legitimate, right?

& Kelly: So, how did you meet Teddy?
Brooke: I saw him. He saw me.
Kelly: .... Yeah. It’s a really romantic story.

& Mac: What do you got there, sweetie?.. Is that a balloon?.. Did you find a balloon?.... Oh, shit! That’s not a balloon!

& Mac: Their dicks bought a hot tub? My dick couldn’t buy a hot tub.
Kelly: Hey. Your dick could buy more than a hot tub. Your dick bought me.
    Mac: Thank you very much.
    Kelly: I’m not a sizeist!

& Mac: Let’s do something crazy.
Kelly: Why don’t I stick something up your ass?
Mac: No, not tonight... Not tonight. Can I stick something up your ass?
Kelly: No, I’m not that drunk.

& Kelly: Oh, my boobs. Oh, God. I gotta feed Stella. I’m more milk than woman.

& Mac: Oh, they’re hulking out! They’re gonna blow.
Kelly: What is happening to me?
Mac: Oh, gross! They look like my grandma’s legs. Okay, let me call my mom. She’ll tell us what to do right now.
Kelly: Do not call your mother! Jesus! You Jews and your fucking mothers!

& Mac: What do I do?
    Kelly: Milk me.

& Kelly: Be a man and milk me!

& Pete: So, are we cool with what happened last night?
    Teddy: Bros before hos. Right?
    Pete: Yeah... Yeah, man.
    Teddy: Junk before trunk.
Pete: All right, balls before dolls.
Teddy: Compadres before I sleep with tu madres.
Pete: Brad Pitt before grab clit.
Teddy: Deez nuts before skinny sluts.
Pete: Masturbate before I ask her to date.
Teddy: Beef stew before watching the view.
Pete: Male erection before one direction.
Teddy: Mario and Luigi before Thelma & Louise-ee.
Pete: Bert and Ernie before squirtin’ spermy.
Teddy: Man purses before regular purses.
Pete: Makes sense. Okay. Sports before genital warts... No, fuckin’. That’s bad.
Teddy: That was a little weird.
Pete: I’m fading a little bit.
    Teddy: John Madden before...
    Pete: Jasmine from Aladdin!
    Teddy: Jasmine from Aladdin!

& Mac: Why would they just break in and steal the airbags?
Kelly: I don’t know. We should file a police report...
Mac: What the fuck? ... Oh, shit! ... Found the airbags! There’s three left! ... Fuck! ... Two left!
Ω That’s it!

& Mac: We made a baby. Things have changed. Everything has changed.
Kelly: Part of our life is just totally over.
    Mac: Yeah.
    Kelly: Just gone.
    Mac: Yeah.
    Kelly: It’s never coming back.
    Mac: No.
Kelly: We’ll never not be responsible for someone until we’re so, so old.
Mac: I think I like old people shit better than young people shit now.
    Kelly: I love brunch.
    Mac: Oh, yes!
Kelly: And I get really excited when I smell freshly ground coffee.
Mac: Me, too, because it’s awesome.
    Kelly: Like, way too excited.
Mac: I want a tomato garden. How’s that?
Kelly: I love going to the container store and buying containers.
    Mac: Me, too.....

& Mac: Do you think we’ll be good parents?
Kelly: I think we’ll be good at it and bad at it.

& Kelly: This is gonna be the best calendar yet...
Mac: All right. Let’s do it. Who’s my little Heisenberg? You are! She’s a little meth head.
Kelly: No, she just makes it.
    Mac: Oh...

& Kelly: I feel completely comfortable missing that party.

The Paring Knife

The Honourable Woman 1×8

& Hugh: ... So they had to take him out before the Israelis could get to him and find out what it was she’d agreed to.
Julia: The murder of Nessa Stein?
Hugh: Maybe, but I don’t think so. Come on, this is realpolitik. Whatever it is, it has to make the US look good.

& Hugh: Huh! There was me thinking she’s gunning for my job, when, all along, she just wants yours.
    Julia: Ouch.

& The Secretary of State: ’I am not a businesswoman, I am a politician. And a politician recognises that a state without a cohesive identity is a state that cannot function — a state that will fail — and a failed state is a danger to the world. A balance needs to be brought to bear and not only one that is economic, to which Nessa Stein’s life must surely attest, but one that is also political... to which cause this administration has decided to take a bold and certain stance. Should the Palestinian Authority resubmit its application to the UN for full state recognition, it is the intent of this administration not to exercise its veto. We, the American people, will not stand in the way of Palestine’s quest for statehood. Thank you.’
Ω Brrrr.

& Julia: Today’s a different world.
    Monica: A better one.

& Monica: It’s all over... So say goodbye to the view, Hugh.

& Muraji: We think this is an Israeli ploy to discredit the brave stand America has taken against them. Nessa Stein is dead. A martyr to our cause.

& Daniel: ...and remember, the airspace above the Palestinian territories, it is Israeli.
Julia: Hm. When you hear that, it makes you think, doesn’t it?

& Julia: There is no way that I’m suggesting UK boots on Palestinian soil.

& Hugh: I understand.
    Atika: What do you understand?
Hugh: You believe in a cause. Actually, I rather admire it. One you can give your whole life to... kill for... and die.

& Hugh: Anything for the cause. And what is that? Palestinian statehood? And here we are, this close to your goal. Nothing must stop it from happening. Nothing.

& Atika: Cables? We need a nation.

& Atika: Have you seen the hills? What they’re building? Every day and every day? What you try don’t change anything for my people. We need so much more...
Nessa: What else can I do?

& Nessa: Do you need me to die?
Atika: Me? Oh, no. No. But if it’s the price... for a nation... I’m sorry to tell you, yes.

& Zahid al Zahid: My son raped you. On my orders. Mine. One of my soldiers, also... he killed your father. On my orders. What I have ordered goes beyond all imagining. So I must ask you... if there was a knife on the table between us here... what would you do?

& Zahid al Zahid: The hatred you feel for me right now... only matches what I have felt for your people... all my life.

& Zahid al Zahid: I know you won’t take it... because you think you are better than me. More cultured, more sophisticated. More human. And I hate you all the more... because you have never stopped to think why that is.

& Nessa: I know the answer. And I’ve known it since I first asked... and after every dreadful thing that’s happened since... and the answer’s always the same. I deserve it. All of it. No matter what I do.

& Atika: Get off my land.

& Berkoff: How come it all came down to you?
Julia: Well, I don’t know, Harlan. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that, in a room full of pussies... I’m the only one with a vagina.

& Hugh: See, I’d die for you.

& Hugh: If I end up in a wheelchair, will you come and push me?
    Angie: I’ll think about it.
Hugh: Then I’ll be breaking them both this evening.

& Angie: Ah, well. Democracy... Good luck with that!

& Matthews: You really think Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher?

& Dexter: You sound like Hannah.
Harry: Maybe she’s right. Maybe the dark passenger is just a feeling.
    Dexter: It can’t be.
    Harry: Why?
Dexter: Because if there’s no dark passenger... then I’m responsible for everything I’ve done.

& Debra: Hey. Where’s Dexter?
Masuka: I don’t know. But I’d like to point out the fact that I am here, doing my duty.
    Debra: What?
    Masuka: Nothing!

& Dexter: You’re the one who’s burning people alive. You can’t blame it on something that happened to you when you were a kid. You’re not a kid anymore. It’s time for you to take responsibility. ..... Fuck!

& Dexter: I realize this isn’t the best way to make a good impression on your girlfriend’s father...

Coherence

& Em: We’re just rattled because we’re addicted to cell phones and Internet.
Mike: We are. What did we do before cell phones?

& Laurie: Someone took a picture of you when you were looking at the box.
Beth: You were looking into the lens.
Em: But then it was already in the box.

& Hugh: These are Brian’s notes from his lesson plan for his class. «Decoherence and Schrödinger’s Cat.» He talked about this. Do you guys know what Schrödinger’s cat is?
    Amir: I’m allergic.

& Hugh: So, it’s a, um... It’s a thought experiment. There’s a... There’s a cat in a box... that has, like, a 50/50 chance of living... because there’s a vial of poison... that’s also in the box. So, regular physics would say that it’s one or the other. That the cat is either alive or dead. But Brian would argue that quantum physics says... that both realities exist simultaneously. It’s only when you open the box that they collapse... into a single event. Right? So, listen to this. This is what he’s written.
«There is another theory: that two states continue to exist... separate and decoherent from each other, each creating a new branch of reality... based on the two outcomes. Quantum decoherence ensures that the different outcomes... have no interaction with each other.»

& Mike: Well, how many Hugh and Amirs are walking around out there?

& Em: We are not from this house. We are visitors. Which means that this Lee is not your wife... Are you with me?

& Mike: Hugh, that is not my Lee. That is not your Beth, and I am not your Mike.

& Mike: You know, I’ve made some... some choices, that I’m stuck with. Um... I’m stuck here. I’m like the dead cat, right? This whole night we’ve been worrying... there’s some dark version of us out there somewhere. What if we’re the dark version?

& Louise: ’... For Mr. Bohannon has always worn his integrity like a millstone around his neck.’

& Louise: ’... Cullen Bohannon has come home, dear reader. And in our little world just west of civilization, we find ourselves once again at his mercy.’

& Durant: Excuses will not get my tunnel built. Now, do whatever you have to do.

& Durant: It’s the ghost of Cullen Bohannon. And... mormon, no less.

& Durant: And how many mormons did you have to put in the ground to effect your escape?
    Bohannon: Wasn’t like that.
Durant: It’s always like that with you, Bohannon. You start a gunfight in my town, nearly have us all killed, and for what? A girl you got pregnant.

& Mickey: What happened to you?
Bohannon: Got a mormon girl in the family way, and I need a job. Any more questions?

& Mickey: By the way, I’m the mayor now!
    Bohannon: Congratulations.

& Naomi: Is he a close friend of yours?
Bohannon: Hm... Killed his brother, and I helped to bury him... Suppose that makes us somethin’.

& Psalms: Never thought I’d see the day I’d be the boss of the boss.
Bohannon: Don’t get used to it, Psalms.
    Psalms: Mm-hmm.

& Psalms: Uh-oh. Here come your other woman problem.

& Campbell: One day when people arrive on your train, they’ll look up, see that flag flyin’ above my statehouse and know the value we place on law and order around here.
Durant: Law abiding people who admire the confiscation of private property, hmm? That’s railroad land.
Campbell: Technically, if it’s not in use by the railroad for railroad purposes, that land is available for acquisition by the state under eminent domain. That’s the law, Mr. Durant.

& Durant: My engineers are drawing up plans even as we speak.
Campbell: If there is no structure on that hill within 24 hours, Mr. Durant, my office will file form 0939, condemning that property for state use... As set forth by the United States railroad act.

Ω Eva, Eva, Eva. Uhh!
& Eva: I just want to know how you cheated me.
Cheater: You cheated yourself, woman, by sittin’ down at a table with the likes of me. Now, you are either desperate, greedy, or stupid.
Eva: I’m just desperate. And stupid. And I need to know how you did it.

& Campbell: Allow me to engage a room for you at the hotel. Hot bath, warm bed... You could be there tonight, Mrs. Bohannon.
Bohannon: Work for a carpetbagger?.. Not a chance in a hell.

& Louise: I’m interested in your story, Mr. Bohannon. My readers will be as well.
Bohannon: Ain’t a story, miss Ellison. Just a life. It’s mine to live, nobody’s to read about.

River: “Day” is a vestigial mode... of time measurement based on solar cycles. It’s not applicable. I didn’t get you anything.

& Kaylee: Couldn’t get ahold of no flour, so it’s mostly protein. In fact, it’s pretty much what we just had for dinner. But I tried to get... the frosting as chocolatey tasting as possible, so...

Ben: Um, I like it. I mean, uh, it’s slower. But, uh, that’s good, you know, it gives you kind of more time to think.

Season Finale

& Mum at airport: It’s just, you know... the environment.
Terrence: Yes, we should all think of that.
Mum: I don’t want to sound like a twat, but I just... You know, I do think that we’ve all got a responsibility. I just do.
Terrence: No, you’re right, we do. We all do. Why did you have him, then?
    Mum: Sorry?
Terrence: Nothing uses carbon like a first-world human. Yet you created one.
    Mum: Er...
Terrence: Why? Why would you do that? He will produce 515 tonnes of carbon in his lifetime. That’s 40 trucks’ worth. Having him was the equivalent of nearly 6,500 flights to Paris. You could have flown 90 times a year, there and back, nearly every week of your life, and still not had the same impact on the planet as his birth had.
Mum: Yeah, but I don’t think...
Terrence: Not to mention the pesticides, detergents, the huge quantity of plastics, the nuclear fuels used to keep him warm. His birth was a selfish act. It was brutal. You have condemned others to suffering.

& Terrence: In fact, if you really cared... what you’d do is cut his throat open right now.
    Mum: Excuse me?
Terrence: Or I could do it for you. I could take out my knife, make an incision in his neck, walk away. I’d get my coach over there and you would have done more than your bit for the future of humanity. I could do it now...

& Terrence: I hope he gets over that flu. But maybe he just shouldn’t.

& Wilson: Jessica? How’s she?
Becky: Not good. She hasn’t said a word. She meets her dad for the first time, and he tries to kill her brother. God. Families, eh?

& Becky: Oh, and don’t start calling them «the three», OK? It’s not Lord of the fucking Rings and you’re not a hobbit or a fucking space goblin, right?

& Ian: Nothing.
    Wilson: Piss on his bed.

Wilson: It needs to look like a burglary. Piss on his bed.

& Becky: It’s top secret. I even thought to reconstruct it myself, but, er... molecular chemistry’s a tricky fucker.

& Wilson: How could you do that? How could you shoot at people you love?
Philip: The world’s full of love. Billions of people loving billions of others. All that love will turn to dust when our resources die. I’ve seen what people are capable of when they feel they’re losing everything. Look around. Do you really think we’re so far from that?

& Jessica: He’s going to release the virus now?
Leah: It would appear so, dear.
Jessica: Call me «dear» again, and I’ll cut your face off.

& Wilson: She was wrong, Michael. You don’t need a pandemic for people to take the vaccine. You just need the fear of a pandemic...

& Wilson: I promise you, I’ll be better than her.

& Michael: Wilson, Wilson. Wilson. Don’t... don’t do this. Please. This is not you.
Wilson: No. I don’t think I am me. Not any more.

Catherine: No, you want to be with Wilfred.

Wilfred: Yeah, ’cause you thought all that stuff about me being a god was a crock of shit. Now do you believe?
    Ryan: You really are Mataman?!
Wilfred: Well, I’m not Jesus Christ, and as far as I know, he was the only other dude who managed to pull off a resurrection.

& Ryan: So, you’re a ghost?
Wilfred: Not exactly. I’m between host bodies. I need to move on to my next Chosen One. His name is Nazeem, which should be, you know, interesting.

& Ryan: Who is that guy?
Charles: That’s Richard. He always played the good god, Mataman. A real prick. Nobody liked him. Very preachy, always telling other people how to live their lives.

& Ryan: You don’t seem crazy.
Charles: Son... I’m all kinds of nuts. The only thing that keeps me from bouncing off padded walls is... I’ve discovered the one, true god. And I take half a dozen pharmaceuticals. These days the craziest thing I do is talk to my dog.
Ryan: Does he ever talk back?

& Ryan: I’m okay. I mean, I’m not unhappy. I’m just... normal.
Kristen: That’s not good enough, Ryan. Everybody deserves happiness. What would make you happy?

& Ryan: I miss you, Wilfred. Without you, my life is so ordinary and flat and dull. I need to know that you’re still here. Please, just give me a sign to let me know that... Oh, God! Wilfred.
Wilfred: That’d be right, blame the dog.
    Ryan: Oh, thank God.

& Ryan: Wilfred, I want you to stay, but... we can’t go back to the way things were.
Wilfred: You mean, I tell you the right thing to do, you ignore me, so I make your life a living hell until you have no choice but to do the thing I told you to do in the first place?
    Ryan: Basically, yeah.
Wilfred: Maybe you could pay attention to the wisdom your best mate has to offer.

Wilfred: If I just agree with you can we just talk about something else? Anything else.
Ryan: I mean, there are things that make you happy, but it’s not a sustainable feeling. Parades don’t last forever. Fireworks burn out. Colors fade.
Wilfred: It’s not about parades and fireworks. It’s about that pair of tits there, that’s happiness. A scratch behind the ear. The sun in your face. A decaying seagull carcass. Happiness is in the quieter moments, mate.

& Wilfred: It’s time for me to move on to the next pathetic loser. I-I mean, «chosen one.»

Meet the New Boss

Tyrant 1×8

& Tucker: So, you want to have a coup, oust your own brother?.. The U.S. is not in the business of regime change.
Ω Really?
Bassam: Say that again with a straight face.
Ω Exactly!

& Tucker: And who do you think is going to replace your brother?
Bassam: I have spent many years running away from it, but... I am an Al Fayeed.
Tucker: You’re a goddamn pediatrician. And you’re drunk. Go home, sleep it off.
Ω So what?

& Ihab: Ah, the election. It’s two years from now. Mmm, global warming, MERS, earthquakes. The world may not even be here in two years...

& Lea Exley: On the Hare psychopathy checklist, Jamal scored a click below Jeffrey Dahmer.

& Exley: So, where are we on the M&M’s?
    Tucker: Yussef’s working his angle.
    Barry: What’s M&M’s?
Tucker: Executing a coup requires three things... Military, media and money. You don’t have ’em, it can’t be done.
Yussef: But this M&M’s... It’s also a candy, yes?

& Exley: A coup’s got about a week between inception and execution. That’s about as long as people can keep a secret.

& Gen. Tariq: Many countries have elections. Syria, Iran...

& Gen. Tariq: Walid, serve your country. In the name of democracy.
Walid: Me? Sir, I have no political aspirations.
Gen. Tariq: Don’t worry. You won’t win. But you will help us present to the world our commitment to this bullshit.

& Tucker: Our fingerprints aren’t on it, it’s homegrown. It’s a good plan.
Exley: Mike Tyson used to say, «everybody’s got a plan until they get hit in the face.»

& Barry: Molly, I’m taking his place.

Chemistry

Dexter 7×7

& Dexter: ’Chemistry... I’ve heard some people have it. An attraction that can’t be quantified or explained. Is that the reason behind this... Loss of control?’

& Hannah: So you think I’m bad.
Dexter: You— you fit the general description.

& Dexter: ’Chemistry deals with the reactions between elementary forms of matter. Separate the elements, and you negate the reaction.’

& Dexter: It’s the code I live by.
Hannah: Code, huh? You know, sometimes life just has to be taken. There’s no need to dress it up.

& Dexter: She isn’t drawn to my darkness like Lila, or blind to it like Rita, and she doesn’t need it like Lumen. She accepts both sides of me. The whole Dexter. So why am I walking away from this? Because when some chemicals mix they combust, and explode.

& Sirko: In fact, I was so blinded by my desire for vengeance that you were able to lead me into a trap. A mistake I assure you won’t happen again.
Dexter: We have a cartoon in America about a coyote who chases after a roadrunner. He keeps thinking that. He keeps rocket-skating right off the cliff.

& Sirko: No. You didn’t kill Viktor out of vengeance. I have a feeling that you’re a different kind of animal. The question is... What kind are you, Dexter Morgan?

& Hannah: You know, my grandma has this saying. “Trust those who seek the truth, but doubt those who say that they have found it.” My grandma wasn’t ever wrong.

& Hannah: Sometimes life subtracts... Sometimes it adds.

& Dexter: ’Not only can’t I kill her, I can’t seem to stay away from her. Even when I’m not with Hannah, she’s there, in my head. When some elements come together, they create a reaction that can’t be reversed. They transcend chemistry. Is this what love feels like? Is this how it begins? Am I even capable of this?’

& Debra: There has to be some fucking justice. It’s you, Dex.
    Dexter: Me?
Debra: You know what I’m saying? She deserves it. I want you to make it right. Do what you do.

Palo Alto

& Fred: If I was going to kill myself, I’d kill a bunch of other people and take ’em down with me. I wouldn’t waste it.
April: Why would you do that? Why wouldn’t you do like a bunch of really crazy good things you know, like help people or save kids or something.
Fred: I think when you’re suicidal, though, you’re probably only thinking about yourself.

& Mr. B: The way to write a good history paper is to choose your event and then just explain why it happened. History is just explaining why things happened.
April: But what if I don’t think there’s a reason for something happening?
Mr. B: Well, then you need to think harder.
April: Yeah, but I do things all the time for no reason.
    Mr. B: Mmm-hmm. It’s because you’re young.

& April: I mean, if you wanted to, couldn’t you just say that the reason everything’s happened is because of one thing that happened at the very, very, very beginning of time.
Mr. B: Mmm-hmm. If you wanted to be a smart-ass.

& Mr. B: I’m older and I know that there aren’t a lot of good things around and I know that you are really good.

& Mr. Wilson: You know, I had a near death experience myself once. I was going down the tunnel in a convertible car, old convertible car. It’s not my car. It’s freezing cold. Ice, like brown melting ugly ice. I say to myself, “Bob, you’re going down the tunnel of death.” Then I say to myself, “My name is not Bob. I’m not Bob.” Then I said, “It’s not my car.” And this is not my tunnel.
    Fred: So, what happened?
Mr. Wilson: I made a uie and suddenly I’m going fast the other way and there’s a rainbow. It’s a rainbow... You’re going down the wrong way, Bob. Turn your art around.
    Fred: Dude, I’m not Bob.
Mr. Wilson: Yes, yes! That’s right!

Modern Family 1×20

& Mitchell: I am— whew! — Not cut out to be a stay-at-home dad. No. But I-it’s Cameron’s turn. It’s Cameron’s turn to be out in the world. Interacting with other grown-ups while I get to stay at home... and plot the death of Dora the Explorer. I’d like to fill her backpack with bricks and throw her into Candy-Cane river!

& Phil: Father-in-laws are tough. Because you can’t let them push you around. And you also have to show them respect. It’s like walking a tightrope. Which, by the way, I can do because I went to trapeze school.

& Cameron: You have a car turntable and you’re wearing rubber. You’re like Batman.

& Claire: I miss babies. They never tell you to go away.

& Claire: I don’t know about you, but I’m not gonna stand here and feel sorry for myself. You know what we should do?
    Gloria: Get pregnant!
Claire: I was gonna say go for ice cream.
Gloria: Okay, we’ll do yours first.
