Spartacus: Vengeance

Season 2 Episode 9

& Crixus: You learn quickly.
Naevia: I have advantage. Of being taught by a god.

& Nemetes: Are we to use wooden stick in battle as well? I need no instruction. I fucking know how to fight.
Oenemaus: I instruct you not how to fight, but how to win. So you do not find yourself again enslaved by the Romans. First position!

& Ilithyia: The child is yours.
Ω It’s complicated.

& Spartacus: I am not Glaber. Able to strike a woman down for his crimes absent misgivings.
Gannicus: And what of the women crucified in the streets of Capua? Tortured to death because they dare whisper your name, eyes bright with thoughts of freedom and rebellion? Take the her life and end this now. Or see countless more fall in the name of your cause.

& Mira: He is a good man. I will not let him be destroyed by this. I will not let him kill you.
    Ilithyia: You will help me?
Mira: Yes. I will help you... From this fucking world.

& Glaber: I fear you are right. You are not like me. Your wife was the heart that beats within your breast. You would have given all to see her live. While I would do the same... to see you dead.

& Spartacus: Do you know what it is? To love? To be filled with light and hope? To see that blessing returned in kind, in the eyes of the only one that could ever know the true depth of your heart?

& Ilithyia: You let me live?
Spartacus: Do not think it a kindness.

Derek 1×4

& Dougie: I can’t move. You can’t keep doing this, Derek.
    Derek: What?
Dougie: This. This was never part of the job description for me.

& Derek: I loves wrestling. I’m strong and grabby. I don’t like real fighting. In real fighting, you fights people what you don’t like, so you can hurt ’em. But in wrestling, I wrestles people what I do like. It’s like strong cuddling, really
Dougie: Strong cuddling? Is that what he calls it? Honestly, there’s times when I wish he didn’t like me as much. His affection’s going to kill me one day.

& Derek: Could you give AIDS cancer? If a dog had got rabies, attacked a man with AIDS and the man bit him and the dog bit the man, would the dog get AIDS?

& Rebecca: I wondered why you weren’t on Facebook.
Hannah: ’When am I going to go on Facebook? What would I put on there? "Changed a bedpan“?’

& Hannah: Joan used to say, “You make a living from what you get. You make a life from what you give.”

& Dougie: What are you doing?
    Kev: Writing on crabs.
    Dougie: What’s all that about?
    Derek: He’s writing on crabs.
Dougie: What? What the motherfuck are you writing on crabs for?
Kev: Weird question. Why aren’t you writing on crabs, mate? That’s a better question.
Dougie: It’s not. Why are you writing on crabs?
Kev: Flat shiny surface, mate. Marker pen. You do the math.

& Kev: Just written TWAT on this one. If I could find a bigger one I’d write CARPET MUNCHER.
Dougie: What other words are you writing?
    Kev: QUIM, TAMPON...
Derek: There’s MUFF here. There’s COCK over there.

& Dougie: I’ve never heard of anyone going to the seaside and doing this as a little activity. Using crabs as fucking post-it notes.
Kev: Who are you, crab police?

& Dougie: What’s BOLL?
Kev: BOLL and OCKS. The only make sense together.

& Kev: Go on, boys. Go and annoy the world.
    Derek: Can you find TITS?

& Hannah: ’She’ll get over it, back at her five-bedroom house...’ She ain’t got room for her mum, though. Five bedrooms. I’ve got 23 bedrooms. And I’ve got a six-figure salary if you count the two after the decimal point.

Game of Thrones 3×10

Season III Finale

& Sansa: What are you doing?
    Tyrion: I have a list.
Sansa: A list of people you mean to kill? For laughing at me?
Tyrion: Do I look like Joffrey to you? No, death seems a bit extreme. Fear of death, on the other hand...

& Joffrey: I am the king! I will punish you.
Tywin: Any man who must say, “I am the king” is no true king... I’ll make sure you understand that when I’ve won your war for you.
Joffrey: My father won the real war! He killed Prince Rhaegar! He took the crown while you hid under Casterly Rock!
Tywin: ............... The king is tired. See him to his chambers.

& Tywin: Not you.

& Tyrion: I’m all for cheating. This is war. But to slaughter them at a wedding...
Tywin: Explain to me why it is more noble to kill 10,000 men in battle than a dozen at dinner.
Tyrion: So that’s why you did it? To save lives?
Tywin: To end the war. To protect the family.

& Tywin: Shall I explain to you in one easy lesson how the world works?
Tyrion: Use small words. I’m not as bright as you.
Tywin: The house that puts family first will always defeat the house that puts the whims and wishes of its sons and daughters first. A good man does everything in his power to better his family’s position regardless of his own selfish desires... Does that amuse you?
Tyrion: No, it’s a very good lesson. Only it’s easy for you to preach utter devotion to family when you’re making all the decisions.
Tywin: Easy for me, is it?
Tyrion: When have you ever done something that wasn’t in your interest but solely for the benefit of the family?
Tywin: The day that you were born....... I wanted to carry you into the sea and let the waves wash you away. Instead, I let you live. And I brought you up as my son. Because you’re a Lannister.

& Meera: If the gods turned every killer into a giant white rat...
Bran: It wasn’t for murder the gods cursed the Rat Cook or for serving the king’s son in a pie. He killed a guest beneath his roof. That’s something the gods can’t forgive.

& Lord Bolton: Ramsay well... Ramsay has his own way of doing things.

& Ramsay: Well, the girls weren’t lying. You had a good-sized cock... What?.. No! Pork sausage. You think I’m some sort of savage?

& Ramsay: I’ve always wondered... do eunuchs have a phantom cock?

& Ramsay: Sorry. I shouldn’t make jokes. My mother taught me not to throw stones at cripples... But my father taught me to aim for their head.

& Ramsay: You don’t look like a Theon Greyjoy anymore. That’s a name for a lord. But you’re not a lord, are you? You’re just... meat. Stinking meat. You reek. Reek! That’s a good name for you. What’s your name?
    Theon: Theon Greyjoy.
    Ramsay: ... What’s your name?
    Theon: Th... Theon Greyjoy. Please.
Ramsay: ... What... is... your... name?!
Theon: Reek. My name is... Reek.

& Gilly: Come with us. There’s nothing north but death.
Sam: If Jon is alive, then Castle Black’s where he’ll be. It’s the safest place for you.
Jojen: There’s nowhere safe any longer. You know that.
Sam: What I know is what I saw. And if you saw it, too, you’d run the other way.
Jojen: You saw the white walkers and the army of the dead.
Sam: How do you know all that?
Jojen: The Night’s Watch can’t stop them. The kings of Westeros and all their armies can’t stop them.
Sam: ... But you’re going to stop them?

& Jojen: What are they for?
    Sam: Killing white walkers.
Meera: How do you know that?
Gilly: The walker came for my baby. And Sam...
Meera: But no one’s killed a white walker in thousands of years!
Sam: Well, I suppose someone had to be the first.

& Gendry: I should have known. Every time a highborn asks my name, it’s trouble. We’re not really people to you, are we? Just a million different ways to get what you want.

& Davos: I did it for my son. I didn’t want him to step over a river of shit every time he stepped through his front door. I wanted him to have a better life.
    Gendry: Does he?
    Davos: He’s dead...
    Gendry: How’d he die?
    Davos: ... Following me.

& Varys: We break bread with them, but that doesn’t make us family. We’ve learned their language, but we’ll never be their countrymen. If you let yourself believe that a foreign girl with no name could spend her life with the son of Tywin Lannister...
    Shae: I have a name!
Varys: You have one name. As do I. Here only the family name matters.

& Shae: Why do you want me to leave?
Varys: Tyrion Lannister is one of the few people alive who could make this country a better place. He has the mind for it, he has the will, he has the right last name. And you... you are a complication.

& Tyrion: It’s not easy being drunk all the time. Everyone would do it if it were easy.

& Cersei: You want to make things better for Sansa? Give her a child.
Tyrion: So you can tell Father it was you who finally talked me into it?
Cersei: So she can have some happiness in her life.
Tyrion: You have children. How happy would you say you are?
Cersei: Not very... But if it weren’t for my children, I’d have thrown myself from the highest window in the Red Keep.

& Tyrion: How long does it go on?
Cersei: Until we’ve dealt with all our enemies.
Tyrion: Every time we deal with an enemy, we create two more.
Cersei: Then I suppose it will go on for quite a long time.

& Clegane: Is that the first man you’ve killed?
    Arya: The first man.

& Davos: “To His Grace King Stannis Baratheon. Invaded... inv... invit... invited to the name day celebration for Rylene Florent on the first nigit...”
    Shireen: Night.
Davos: “First night of the full moon.” Why is there a G in night?
Shireen: I don’t know. There just is.

& Stannis: My enemies have made my kingdom bleed. I will not forget that. I will not forgive that. I will punish them with any arms at my disposal.
Davos: You do not need to burn the boy. If what you say is true, a drop of his blood killed Robb Stark...
Melisandre: And our king is still no closer to the Iron Throne. A great gift requires a great sacrifice.
Davos: .... His name is Gendry.

& Davos: He’s a good lad. A poor lad from Flea Bottom who happens to be your nephew.
Stannis: What is the life of one bastard boy against a kingdom?
    Davos: Everything.
    Stannis: The boy must die.

& Davos: The other way. You ever been in a boat before?
    Gendry: No.
Davos: You know how to swim?
    Gendry: No.
    Davos: Then don’t fall out.

& Gendry: Why are you doing this?
Davos: Because it’s right. And because I’m a slow learner.

& Melisandre: Your mercy saved the boy’s life. You feel good about that?
    Davos: Aye, I do.
Melisandre: You saved one innocent. How many tens of thousands have you doomed?

& Melisandre: This War of Five Kings means nothing. The true war lies to the north, my king. Death marches on the Wall. Only you can stop him.

& Daenerys: Perhaps they didn’t want to be conquered.
Ser Jorah: You didn’t conquer them. You liberated them.
Daenerys: People learn to love their chains.

& — Mhysa! Mhysa! Mhysa!
    Daenerys: What does it mean?
Missandei: It is old Ghiscari, khaleesi. It means “mother.”

Dexter 1×4

& Harry: Dexter, what’s your problem?
Dexter: I hate the beach. it’s sandy and gross and nasty, and I want to go home.
Harry: Too bad. You’re part of a family. And being part of a family means smiling for photos.
Dexter: Why should i pretend I’m happy?
Harry: Because it’ll make your mom happy, and because it’s how you fit in. {...} This is how you do it. When somebody takes your picture, you smile. It doesn’t matter if you’re happy or not. You just do it to fit in.

& Dexter: I love Halloween — the one time of year when everyone wears a mask... Not just me. People think it’s fun to pretend you’re a monster. Me, I spend my life pretending I’m not. Brother, friend, boyfriend — all part of my costume collection. Some people might call me a fraud.

& Harry: You can’t be a bully, Dexter. First of all, it’s wrong. Secondly, people remember bullies. People like me — cops. A bully is a felony waiting to happen. So...
    Dexter: Blend in.

& Dexter: That was... unexpected.
    Rita: Yeah. For me, too.
Dexter: Mmm. I have no problem with... unexpected.

& Dexter: Everyone hides who they are at least some of the time. Sometimes you bury that part of yourself so deeply that you have to be reminded it’s there at all. ... And sometimes you just want to forget who you are altogether. And what about me?

& Dexter: I’m neither man nor beast. I’m something new entirely, with my own set of rules. I’m Dexter.

Popping Cherry

Dexter 1×3

& Dexter: How’d it feel... to kill a guy?
Harry: Not so great, Dex. When you take a man’s life, you’re not just killing them. You’re snuffing out all the things he’ll ever become... As a cop, I only fire my weapon to save a life. That’s a code I live by. Killing must serve a purpose. Otherwise, it’s just plain murder.

& Dexter: Harry taught me that death isn’t the end. It’s the beginning of a chain reaction that will catch you if you’re not careful. He taught me that none of us are who we appear to be on the outside... but we must maintain appearances to survive... But there was something Harry didn’t teach me, something he didn’t know, couldn’t possibly know. The willful taking of life represents the ultimate disconnect from humanity. It leaves you an outsider, forever looking in, searching for company to keep.

& King Charles VIII: We do not choose our calling, Your Holiness. It is chosen for us. When called to serve, as King of France, and, I am sure, as Pope of Rome, we can only have one response: serviam.
Borgia: I will serve. However imperfect my service, however human my failings, when called to serve...

& Cesare: Father.

Borgia: We think they should present themselves in sackcloth and ashes at the next convention.
    Johannes: Sackcloth and ashes?

Crixus: You seek to part head from shoulders. There are blows that kill with less effort.

& Seppia: Will they be enough?

Ω Exactly! No difference between both of you.

& Neville: General... There’s been a change in management.

Before Sunset

& Journalist: Do you consider the book to be autobiographical?
Jesse: Well, I mean... isn’t everything autobiographical? I mean, we all see the world through our own tiny keyhole, right?

& Jesse: Thomas Wolfe ... says that we are the sum of all the moments of our lives... and anybody who sits down to write will use the clay of their own life... that you can’t avoid that. So when I look at my own life, I have to admit, right, that I... I’ve never been around a bunch of guns or violence, you know, not really. No political intrigue or a helicopter crash, right? But my life, from my own point of view, has been full of drama, right? And so I thought, if I could write a book... that could capture what it’s like to really meet somebody... One of the most exciting things that’s happened to me... is to meet somebody, make that connection. And if I could make that valuable, you know, to capture that... that would be the attempt, or...

& A reader: Do you think they get back together in six months... like they promise each other?
Jesse: Like they promised? I think how you answer that, you know, is... It’s a good test, right, if you’re a romantic or a cynic. Right? I mean, you think they get back together, right?.. You don’t, for sure... And you hope they do, but you’re not sure. That’s why you’re asking the question. ... Look, in the words of my grandfather, okay: “To answer that would take the piss out of the whole thing.”

& Celine: Your book is a bestseller in the U.S.
    Jesse: It’s a tiny bestseller.
    Celine: Oh, come on.
Jesse: All right. Officially, yes. Most people haven’t read Moby Dick. Why should they read my book?

& Celine: Reading something, knowing the character is based on you... it’s both flattering and disturbing at the same time.
    Jesse: How is it disturbing?
Celine: I don’t know. Just being part of someone else’s memory. Seeing myself through your eyes...

& Jesse: Maybe what I’m saying is... the world might be evolving the way a person evolves. Like, I mean, me, for example. Am I getting worse? Am I improving? I don’t know. When I was younger, I was healthier... but I was wracked with insecurity, you know? Now I’m older and my problems are deeper... but I’m more equipped to handle them.

& Celine: Memory is a wonderful thing if you don’t have to deal with the past.
Jesse: “Memory is wonderful if you don’t have to deal with the past...” Can I put that on a bumper sticker? If you wrote a book about our night, that’s a good title.

& Celine: Little things. I think it’s the same with people. I see in them little details, so specific to each of them... that move me and that I miss and will always miss. You can never replace anyone... because everyone is made of such beautiful, specific details.

& Celine: You know, it’s so weird. People think they are the only one going through tough times.

& Jesse: I’m sure you’d make... Be a great mom someday.
    Celine: Really? You think so?
Jesse: Yeah... a few antidepressants, you know, you’ll do great.

& Celine: Oh, I love my kitty. I love my kitty.
    Jesse: What’s his name?
    Celine: Che.
    Jesse: Che?
    Celine: What?
    Jesse: Commie.
Celine: No, “che” in Argentina means “hey.”

& Celine: Is chamomile okay?
    Jesse: Yeah. Great. Merci.
Celine: Messy? You think my apartment is messy?
Jesse: No, no. Merci... Merci beaucoup.
    Celine: Ah, merci.

& Celine: I have three songs in English. One’s about my cat... one’s about my ex-boyfriend... Well, ex-ex-boyfriend... and there’s one about... Well, it’s just a little waltz.
Jesse: A waltz? Play the waltz.

& Celine: Baby, you are gonna miss that plane.
    Jesse: I know.

Mira: Did he miss the part where we pulled the arena down on his head?
Gannicus: Rome is propped up by more than a few wooden beams. If your cause is to see your lives cut short, then you march towards certain victory.
Spartacus: Why did you choose to aid us, if you believe such?
Gannicus: You mistake choice for repayment of a debt. One owed to Oenomaus. Absent it... we would not be breaking words.

& Lucretia: You forget your place!
    Ashur: No. I secure it.

& Gannicus: I chose not to kill you in the arena. And now my rudis, my freedom, is forever buried beneath its rubble.
Spartacus: Freedom is not a stick of wood, to be presented as a bone to obedient dog. It is a thing all men deserve.

& Spartacus: It was Glaber who condemned us to slavery. And I will not rest while he yet draws breath.

& Jesse: Do you have any idea what they were arguing about?

& Celine: Have you heard that as couples age... they lose their ability to hear each other?
    Jesse: No.
Celine: Supposedly, men lose their ability to hear high-pitched sounds... and women eventually lose hearing in the low end. I guess so they nullify each other.
Jesse: I guess. Nature’s way of allowing couples to grow old together... without killing each other.

& Jesse: You know what? Not service oriented. Just an observation about Europe.

& Jesse: Think of it like this. Jump ahead 10, 20 years, okay? And you’re married. Only your marriage doesn’t have that same energy it used to have. You start to blame your husband. You think about all those guys you’ve met in your life... and what might’ve happened if you’d picked up with one of them. I’m one of those guys. That’s me. So think of this as time travel... from then to now to find out what you’re missing out on. What this could be is a gigantic favor... to you and your husband to find out you’re not missing anything. I’m just as big a loser as he is. Unmotivated. Boring. You made the right choice. You’re happy.

& Celine: You know, I’ve been wondering lately... do you know anyone who’s in a happy relationship?
Jesse: Yeah, sure. You know, I know happy couples. But I think they lie to each other.
Celine: Yeah. People can live their whole life as a lie. My grandmother was married... and I thought she had an uncomplicated love life. But she just confessed to me that she spent her whole life... dreaming about another man she was in love with. She just accepted her fate. It’s so sad. In the same time, I love that she had these emotions... and feelings I never thought she had.
Jesse: I guarantee you it was better that way. If she’d known him, he’d have disappointed her eventually.
    Celine: How do you know?
Jesse: I know. I know. People put romantic projections on everything. It’s not based in any kind of reality.

& Palm Reader: You’re both stars. Don’t forget. When the stars exploded billions of years ago... they formed everything that is this world. Everything we know is stardust. So don’t forget, you are stardust.

& Jesse: You know what drives me crazy? People talking about... how great technology is, how it saves all this time. But what good is saved time if nobody uses it? If it just turns into more busy work. I never hear anybody say, “With the time I’ve saved using my word processor... I’m gonna go to a Zen monastery and hang out.” You don’t hear that.
Celine: Time is so abstract anyway.

& Jesse: I kind of see love... as this escape for two people who don’t know how to be alone. It’s funny. People always talk about how... love is this totally unselfish, giving thing. But if you think about it, there’s nothing more selfish.

& Jesse: You know what’s the worst thing about somebody breaking up with you? It’s when you remember how little you thought about... the people you broke up with, and you realize... that that is how little they’re thinking about you. You’d like to think you’re both in pain... but really, they’re just, “Hey, I’m glad you’re gone.”

& Celine: I always feel this pressure of being... a strong and independent icon of womanhood... and not making it look like... my whole life is revolving around some guy. But loving someone... and being loved means so much to me. I always make fun of it and stuff... but isn’t everything we do in life... a way to be loved a little more?
Jesse: I don’t know. Sometimes I dream... about being a good father and a good husband. And sometimes it feels really close. But then other times... it seems silly... like it would... ruin my whole life. And it’s not just a fear of commitment... or that I’m incapable of caring or loving because... I can. It’s just that, if I’m totally honest with myself... I think I’d rather die knowing... that I was really good at something. That I had excelled in some way... than that I’d just been in... a nice, caring relationship.

& Celine: I believe if there’s any kind of God... it wouldn’t be in any of us... not you or me... but just this little space in between. If there’s any kind of magic in this world... it must be in the attempt of understanding someone sharing something. I know, it’s almost impossible to succeed... but who cares really? The answer must be in the attempt.

& Jesse: Everything is so finite. But don’t you think that’s what... makes our time and specific moments so important?

& Jesse: I know what you mean about wishing somebody wasn’t there. It’s just, usually, it’s myself... that I wish I could get away from. Seriously, think about this. I have never been anywhere... that I haven’t been. I’ve never had a kiss... when I wasn’t one of the kissers. You know, I’ve never... gone to the movies when I wasn’t there in the audience. I’ve never been out bowling if I wasn’t there... making some stupid joke. That’s why so many people hate themselves. Seriously. It’s just, they are sick to death... of being around themselves. Let’s say that you and I were together all the time. You’d start to hate a lot of my mannerisms. The way... the way every time that we would have people over... I’d be insecure, and I’d get a little too drunk. Or the way I tell the same stupid, pseudo-intellectual story... again and again. You see, I’ve heard all those stories... so of course I’m sick of myself. But being with you... it’s made me feel like I was somebody else. I mean, the only other way to lose yourself like that is... you know, dancing... or alcohol... or drugs, or stuff like that.
    Celine: Fucking.
Jesse: Fucking, yeah. That’s one way.

& Celine: Do you know what I want?
    Jesse: What?
    Celine: To be kissed.
Jesse: Well, I could do that.

& It’s like some male fantasy. Meet a French girl, fuck her and never see her again. And have this great story to tell.

& Celine: You don’t want to see me again?
Jesse: No, of course I do. If somebody gave me the choice right now... of to never see you again or to marry you... I would marry you. Maybe that’s a lot of romantic bullshit... but people have gotten married for a lot less.

& Celine: When you talked earlier about after a few years... how a couple would begin to hate each other... by anticipating their reactions... or getting tired of their mannerisms. I think it would be the opposite for me. I think I can really fall in love when I know everything about someone. The way he’s gonna part his hair... which shirt he’s gonna wear that day... knowing the exact story he’d tell in a given situation. I’m sure that’s when I know I’m really in love.

Empty Hands

Spartacus: Vengeance

Season 2 Episode 4

& Varinius: We are politicians, are we not? Let us come to middle ground and see everyone satisfied. Choose a single man, and let us make sport of him in memory of your cousin.

& Varinius: What mortal dares defy the gods?
Glaber: Only one who would draw their wrath.

& Varinius: First blood has been drawn! Who stands next?!.. Remember, do not cut too deep. I would not deprive everyone fair turn!

& Magistrate: Your wife does not shy from taking life...
Ilithyia: That is how you sate desire, for love... or vengeance. Without hesitation.

& Marcus: Call the remaining squad.
Ashur: It will not make a difference. Spartacus is possessed by the gods themselves-
Marcus: Spartacus is here! Bear arms!
Ashur: You will draw them to us!
Marcus: And we will fight until the last drop of Roman blood-
Ashur: I am not a Roman. And I will not fucking die this night.

& Glaber: Apologies for earlier doubt. This evening has proven most advantageous.
Ilithyia: Yes. I long to see what dawn shall bring...

& Spartacus: Take Nasir. I will hold them back for as long as I am able.
Mira: No. I stay by your side.

Derek 1×0

Pilot

& Derek: My favourite thing on here is YouTube. My favourite YouTube thing is animals. And my favouritest animal thing is hamster on a piano. Listen.

& Hannah: Do it subtly. Ask him his favourite films, and see if he’s gay or not. But be subtle. Just bring it up.
Derek: .... My, um, friend Hannah, um... she says you might be gay, right, but you mustn’t... and she wants to know, but to not tell her, but if you just tell me your favourite TV programmes and films, then she’ll know if you’re gay or not.
Tom: OK. Tell her I love Glee, I think it’s fab. Tell her The Wizard Of Oz is my favourite film cos of Judy Garland. And that I love her daughter, Eliza, as well. Tell her my absolute favourite is Audrey Hepburn, cos that girl had class. And if she likes all of them, you tell her from me, ’Hmm-mm, you go, girl!’ Can you do that?
    Derek: Yeah.
    Tom: Do it for me.
    Derek: ’Hmm-mm!’

& Dougie: Average age is about 85 up there. Some of them up there are knackered. I don’t know at what point you can say a life is ended, cos some of them don’t move. You know, their knees have gone, their backs have gone, their eyes have gone, their ears have gone. Jack, with his hearing aid, battery on the side of his head, battery runs out, I don’t see the point of putting a new battery in.
Derek: But what would you do, if you was Jack and somebody said, “It’s not worth it”, what would you say? “No, I need a battery, please.” What would you do if you was old, like a tortoise, and someone said, “Don’t bother with him, he’s 100...” I’d save you.

& Derek: She’d tap me on the head... She’d go, “It’s all right,” and it’d make me feel better straightaway. Like magic. And she said, “Kindness is magic, Derek.” She said it’s more important to be kind than clever or good-looking. I’m not clever or good-looking, but I’m kind.

Crocodile

Dexter 1×2

& Debra: Why is it we never talk brother-sister stuff?
Dexter: Our dad was a cop. You’re a cop. I work for the cops. For us, this is brother-sister stuff.

& Dexter: I like puzzles. But there’s nothing more frustrating than putting a puzzle together and finding then it still doesn’t make sense.

& Prosecutor: How long have you been doing blood-spatter analysis?
    Dexter: Almost twelve years.
Prosecutor: You’ve been involved in quite a few cases, then.
    Dexter: 2,103.
    Prosecutor: Give or take.
    Dexter: No, 2,103.
Prosecutor: Then it’s safe to say blood is your life.
    Dexter: ... Safe to say.

& Dexter: I see their pain. On some level, I even understand their pain. I just can’t feel their pain.

& Rita: Tell me about your day.
Dexter: I had court... You know, the blood thing. And then a crime scene and more blood.
Rita: I don’t know how you do it.
Dexter: Well, blood is... my life... my job.

& Dexter: In slaughterhouses, they stun the animals before butchering them. It’s the humane thing to do. Those animals, they’re the lucky ones.

& Dexter: The worst thing about finally putting together a puzzle is finding there are missing pieces.

& Dexter: There are no secrets in life, just hidden truths that lie beneath the surface.

The Art of War

The Borgias 1×8

& Cesare: You know me, brother. I disapprove of lechery, debauchery, drunkenness.
Juan: Which is why our father made you the cardinal.
Cesare: Why, then, did he make you a duke?
Juan: Because lechery and debauchery are the very marks of nobility.

& General: We have pikes for 2,000 footmen, lances for 1,000 horse, bows for 1,500 bowmen... if we can find the soldiers to wield them.
    Borgia: What about cannon?
General: Nobody worthy in the art of war ever uses cannons.
Borgia: I have heard it rumored that the French do.
General: And I have heard that they are vulgarians, my lord.
Borgia: Their cannon was vulgar, indeed, when they brought Lucca to its knees.

& Juan: I have a stratagem, Holy Father, to outwit their cannon.

& Cesare: Will the good Lord see the justice in our cause, Micheletto?
Micheletto: Where warfare is concerned, Your Eminence, our good Lord will take a holiday.

& Juan: My God.
General: So our stratagem was, Gonfaloniere, a feint to their left.
Juan: But I can see no left...
    General: Or right...
Juan: Their army fills the whole horizon.

& King Charles VIII: The pikes of our infantry are 12 feet long. Can you see them there, my dear?
Lucrezia: Why are the blades hooked so, my lord?
King Charles VIII: So they can tear out the guts of their opponents. But we begin battle with the cannon.
    Lucrezia: The cannon?
King Charles VIII: Yes. Never risk a man until you’ve used your artillery. Learned that against the English.

& Lucrezia: Would you survive this day, dear Juan?
Juan: We have a battle to fight!
Lucrezia: Believe me, you have lost it already.
    Juan: It has hardly begun.
Lucrezia: I have heard one roar of cannon. A hundred more and your whole army will be dead and bleeding. And you have yet to see their pikes.
Juan: I will not accept defeat!
Lucrezia: Then do not call it that. Call it common sense.

& Lucrezia: It was my brother, Your Highness!
    King Charles VIII: Your brother?
Lucrezia: The Gonfaloniere of the papal armies. He thought you meant to sack Rome. Like the Goths and Vandal hordes. I told him you were a gentleman. You had no such idea. You had no such idea, had you?
King Charles VIII: No such idea.
    Lucrezia: Your goal is Naples.
King Charles VIII: Naples... Of course.
Lucrezia: So, my brother, the Duke of Gandia, the Gonfaloniere of the papal armies, bids you welcome to Rome.

& Cardinal Sforza: You could ride with us, Holy Father, to the safety of Ostia.
Borgia: Our place is here. As is yours, Cardinal Sforza.
Cardinal Sforza: You should leave, Holy Father.
Borgia: We will stay here. And we shall be here when you return. IF you return.
