Hogfather (2/4)

* Susan: How many have you had, may I ask?
   Albert: Dunno. Haven't been counting.
Death: ONE MILLION, EIGHT HUNDRED THOUSAND, SEVEN HUNDRED AND SIX. AND SIXTY EIGHT THOUSAND, THREE HUNDRED AND NINETEEN PORK PIES. AND ONE TURNIP.
Albert: Well, It looked pork-pie shaped. Everything does, after a while.

* Archchancellor: Ah, verrucas, eh?
Verruca Gnome: Wish I knew why.
Archchancellor: Do you mean you don't know?
Verruca Gnome: No! Suddenly I wake up and I'm the Verruca Gnome!

* Teatime: Children of the world, prepare to think as you are told.

* Archchancellor: So, Mr. Stibbons, this thing's a great big artificial brain, then, eh?
Stibbons: You could think of it like that. Of course, Hex doesn't actually think, not as such. It just appears to be thinking.
Archchancellor: Amazing! You mean it gives the impression of thinking, but it's just a show?
   Stibbons: Er, yes.
Archchancellor: Just like everyone else, then, eh?

* Death: IT'S THE EXPRESSION ON THEIR LITTLE FACES I LIKE.
Albert: Yeah, a sort of cross between fear and awe. They don't know whether to laugh, cry or wet their pants.
Death: YES. NOW, THAT IS WHAT I CALL TRUE BELIEF. NEXT...

* Death: AND WHAT'S YOUR NAME, LITTLE... PERSON?
   Corporal Nobbs: Nobby Nobbs, Hogfather.
Death: AND HAVE YOU BEEN A GOOD BO? A GOOD DWA? A GOOD GNO? A GOOD INDIVIDUAL?
   Corporal Nobbs: Yes.

* Death: SO. THE BOY WANTS A PAIR OF TROUSERS THAT HE DOESN'T HAVE TO SHARE, A HUGE MEAT PIE, A SUGAR MOUSE, A LOT OF TOYS AND A PUPPY CALLED SCRUFF.
Albert: Aw, how sweet. I shall wipe away a tear. 'Cos what he's getting, you see, is this little wooden toy... and an apple.
   Death: BUT THE LETTER CLEARLY...
Albert: I know. It's the socioeconomic factors. I mean, the world would be in a hell of a mess, wouldn't it, if everybody got what they asked for?
Death: BUT I GAVE THEM WHAT THEY WANTED IN THE STORE.
Albert: What good is a god that gives you everything that you want?
   Death: YOU HAVE ME THERE.
Albert: Ah, yeah. No, it's the hope that's important. It's a big part of belief, is the hope. I mean, say you give people jam today and they'll just sit there and eat it. But jam tomorrow? Ah, no. That'll keep 'em going forever.
Death: AND YOU MEAN THAT BECAUSE OF THIS, THE POOR GET POOR THINGS AND THE RICH GET RICH THINGS?
Albert: Well, yeah. It's the meaning of Hogswatch, innit, master?
