A Shot in the Dark

The Expanse 4×7

Carol Chiwewe: So we're all just still at the mercy of you and your invisible friend...

Murtry: You know what to do. Go do it.

Chrisjen: Jesus Christ. I sound incompetent! I wouldn't fucking vote for me.

Aide: I saw it. You came across as honest and open, ma'am.
Chrisjen: Do you know who else is honest and open?... The person who says nothing when nobody asks a fucking question!!!

Murtry: Nobody wins if we all die.

Dr. Okoye: The truth is, single-cell microorganisms native to this planet are making a home in our eyes. They're not hijacking our cells like a virus would, but human bodies are water and high-energy molecules. None of their natural competitors are in us. So our vitreous fluid is a new environment that they are quite happy in... lots of little green babies filling up the space.
Murtry: So th... they're... they're eating away at our eyes?

Naomi: Your mother's been caring for you even since before you were born. She wants you to go and chase your dreams. That's all any mother ever wants. But she's scared that you'll make a mistake, do something you'll regret, she won't be able to protect you...

Dr. Okoye: Not unless I can find the reason that... you seem to be immune.
Holden: Well, not everybody got the plague.
Dr. Okoye: Not everybody talks to an alien.

Dr. Okoye: I have traveled billions of kilometers to be the first exobiologist to study... the most basic forms of extraterrestrial life. And you, on the other hand, are the only person in human history with a direct line of communication to an advanced alien species, and you're annoyed?!
Holden: It's not the same when you don't have the choice.

Arjun: I thought surprise visits were against the rules.
Chrisjen: Fuck the rules. I'm in charge. And I wanted to see my husband.

Arjun: Would losing be so bad?
Chrisjen: I don't know, which is what scares me, and why I need to win. I can't be right if I don't.
Arjun: How far are you willing to go to find out?
Chrisjen: As far as I have to.

Murtry: Things aren't going to end well on this planet for Holden...

The One Thing We Don't Talk About

You're the Worst 5×3

Gretchen: And you have to bang on your wedding night. Like how if you break a mirror, your grandmother's ghost sees you masturbate.

Jimmy: Uh, is this a prank? This can't be the price for a single event!
Gretchen: Just put it on a credit card...

Jimmy: Seventy?! How do you remember to pay off 70 credit cards each month?
Gretchen: You don't need to pay off credit cards. When one stops working, you just get another.
Jimmy: Um, how much do you owe, like, in total?
Gretchen: Who cares? It's not real. It's just some numbers on a computer somewhere.
Jimmy: Why have you never told me of your debt before?!
Gretchen: Honey, it's our debt now.

Gretchen: Please, Jimmy. I can take care of myself.... Which way is my job?

Lindsay: Ooh! You're hiring the new Gretch today?
Gretchen: Trying to. These Post-Millennials with their high GPAs and multiple internships, as if being smart and working for years for free means you deserve an actual job.

Gretchen: What is the one thing we don't talk about?!
Lindsay: Politics. Math. That one crow who has it out for you. What happened between you and Matthew Perry. Coachella— Your bitch mom.

Jimmy: I've come to the realization that there is some value in experiencing the same story in a secondary, inferior medium. Like when you roast a delicious hen, then boil the bones to make a soup.

Edgar: That's good. Remember your soup metaphor?
Jimmy: Soup? Soup isn't food. It's just bone water.

The Expanse 4×6

Carol Chiwewe: Beltalowda, gather your things. It's time for us to go.

— Jesus. Fifty thousand exajoules.
Dr. Sarkis: This planet is gonna look very different tomorrow.

Naomi: Great. So the physics of fusion have just stopped working.

Esai Martin: Can't trust anyone anymore. Sad.

Naomi: All of the reactors are out on every ship in orbit. The fuel pellets are no longer fusing.
Alex: Yeah, the old blue goo went and changed the laws of physics on us again.

Alex: That low orbit has got more atmospheric drag. Slows it down, makes it fall.
Naomi: And normally that's not a problem, because all you would have to do to maintain orbit is speed up...

Murtry: So what's plan C?

Amos: Plan C sounds like everybody dies.

Amos: We'll figure it out.
Chandra: We don't have a lot of time.
Amos: We'll figure it out fast.

Ashford: They were measuring your office for curtains.
Camina: Hmm?
Ashford: It's an ancient Inner saying. It means showing openly that they intend to take what belongs to you.

Ashford: I think you and I, uh... We are both familiar with unforeseen consequences.

Charade (1963)

Regina Lampert: Can't he do something constructive, like start an avalanche or something?

Sylvie Gaudet: It is infuriating that your unhappiness does not turn to fat.

Sylvie Gaudet: But I don't understand. Why do you want a divorce?
Regina Lampert: Because I don't love him. And he obviously doesn't love me.
Sylvie Gaudet: That's no reason to get a divorce. With a rich husband and this year's clothes... you won't find it difficult to make some new friends.
Regina Lampert: I admit I came to Paris to escape American provincial... but that doesn't mean I'm ready for French traditional.

Regina Lampert: That's all I ask of anybody: the simple truth.

Peter Joshua: Do we know each other?
Regina Lampert: Why? Do you think we're going to?
Peter Joshua: I don't know. How would I know?
Regina Lampert: Because I already know an awful lot of people. Until one of them dies I couldn't possibly meet anyone else.
Peter Joshua: Hmm. Well, if anyone goes on the critical list, let me know.

Regina Lampert: You're blocking my view.
Peter Joshua: Oh. Which view would you prefer?
Regina Lampert: The one you're blocking.

Regina Lampert: Wasn't it Shakespeare who said when strangers do meet in far-off lands... they should ere long see each other again?
Peter Joshua: Shakespeare never said that.
Regina Lampert: How do you know?
Peter Joshua: It’s terrible. You just made it up.
Regina Lampert: Well, it sounds right.

Peter Joshua: How about making me vice president in charge of cheering you up?

Regina Lampert: Being murdered in cold blood is not nonsense. Why don't you try it sometime?

Regina Lampert: Won't you come in for a minute?
Peter Joshua: No, I won't.
Regina Lampert: I don't bite, you know, unless it's called for.
Peter Joshua: How would you like a spanking?
Regina Lampert: How'd you like a punch in the nose?

Regina Lampert: Do you know what's wrong with you?
Peter Joshua: No. What?
Regina Lampert: Nothing.

Regina Lampert: Promise me you'll never lie to me the way Charles did. Why do people have to tell lies?
Peter Joshua: Usually it's because they want something. They're afraid the truth won't get it.

Regina Lampert: May I have a cigarette, please?.. I can't stand those things. It’s like drinking coffee through a veil.

Hamilton Bartholomew: Now, please help us, Mrs. Lampert. Your government is counting on you.
Regina Lampert: Well, if I'm going to die, I might as well do it for my country.
Hamilton Bartholomew: That's the spirit. Here's what I want you to do...

Peter Joshua: Now what?
Herman Scobie: We wait. With our mouth shut.

Regina Lampert: You won't be able to lie on your back for a few days. But then, you can lie from any position, can't you?

Regina Lampert: Alex, how can you tell if anyone's lying or not?
Peter Joshua: You can't.
Regina Lampert: There must be some way...
Peter Joshua: There's an old riddle about two tribes of Indians. The Whitefeet always tell the truth, and the Blackfeet always lie. One day you meet an Indian. You say... "Hey, Indian, what are you, a truthful Whitefoot or a lying Blackfoot?" He says, "I'm a truthful Whitefoot. " But which is he?
Regina Lampert: Why couldn't you just look at his feet?
Peter Joshua: Because he's wearing moccasins.
Regina Lampert: Well, then, he's a truthful Whitefoot, of course.
Peter Joshua: Why not a lying Blackfoot?
Regina Lampert: Which one are you?
Peter Joshua: A truthful Whitefoot.

Regina Lampert: Can't you be serious?
Peter Joshua: Oh! You just said an horrible word.
Regina Lampert: What did I say?
Peter Joshua: Serious. When I man gets to be my age, that's the last word he ever wants to hear.

Insp. Edouard Grandpierre: We use the guillotine in this country. I have always suspected that the blade coming down... causes no more than a slight tickling sensation... on the back of the neck. It is only a guess, of course.

Peter Joshua: Why do you think Tex did it?
Regina Lampert: Because I really suspect Gideon... and it's always the person you don't suspect.
Peter Joshua: Do women think it feminine to be so illogical, or can't they help it?
Regina Lampert: What's so illogical about that?
Peter Joshua: You just said it's always the one you don't suspect. You suspect Gideon, therefore it must be Tex. On the other hand, if you suspect Tex it must be the other fella, Gideon.
Regina Lampert: I guess they just can't help it.
Peter Joshua: Hmm? Who?
Regina Lampert: Women.

Peter Joshua: In this highly competitive world... when a man has no profession, there isn't much choice... so I began looking for people who had more money than they needed... including some they'd barely miss.
Regina Lampert: You mean you're a thief?
Peter Joshua: Well, that's not exactly the term I'd have chosen... but it sort of captures the spirit of the thing.

Regina Lampert: Adam Canfield is a crook, and I want to know why.
Peter Joshua: Well, it's simple. I like what I do. I enjoy my work. There aren't many men who love their work as much as I do.

Peter Joshua: Oh, you should see your face...
Regina Lampert: What's the matter with it?
Peter Joshua: It’s lovely.

Peter Joshua: Reggie, I beg you. Just trust me once more.
Regina Lampert: Why should I?
Peter Joshua: I can't think of a reason in the world why you should.

Regina Lampert: Forgive me. Who would I see regarding the return of stolen government money?

Greef Karga: But you're a Mandalorian!
Cara Dune: Mandalorian isn't a race.
The Mandalorian: It's a Creed.

The Mandalorian: What did you do?
IG-11: I am fulfilling my base function.
The Mandalorian: Which is?
IG-11: To nurse and protect.

IG-11: If you go near this child, I will no choice but to kill you.

Greef Karga: Oh, I love IG units.

The Mandalorian: Let me have a warrior's death.
Cara Dune: I won't leave you.
The Mandalorian: This is the Way.

Din Djarin: It is forbidden. No living thing has seen me without my helmet since I swore the Creed.
IG-11: I am not a living thing.

IG-11: You have suffered damage to your central processing unit.
Din Djarin: You mean my brain?
IG-11: That was a joke. It is meant to put you at ease.

Armorer: Show me the one whose safety deemed such destruction.

Armorer: The songs of eons past tell of battles between Mandalore The Great, and an order of sorcerers called Jedi that fought with such powers.
The Mandalorian: It is an enemy?
Armorer: No. Its kind were enemies, but this individual is not.
The Mandalorian: What is it?
Armorer: It is a foundling. By Creed, it is in your care.

Armorer: You have no choice. You must reunite it with its own kind.
The Mandalorian: Where?
Armorer: This, you must determine.
The Mandalorian: You expect me to search the galaxy for the home of this creature and deliver it to a race of enemy sorcerers?
Armorer: This is the Way.

Armorer: A foundling is in your care. By Creed, until it is of age or reunited with its own kind, you are as its father... This is the Way.

Armorer: You have earned your Signet. You are a clan of two.

IG-11: You are protected.

Armorer: Now, go. Down to the river and across the plains.

IG-11: Manufacturer's protocol dictates I cannot be captured. I must be destroyed.

Greef Karga: Let's make the baby do the magic hand thing. Come on, baby! Do the magic hand thing... I'm out of ideas.

Mr. Robot 4×13

Elliot: I had no other choice.

Mr. Robot: Wherever you go, I go. Remember?

Elliot: Whiterose's machine, somehow it worked. She was right. We're in a world where everything's better.
Mr. Robot: Not for him.

Elliot: If you're here to tell me what I did was wrong—
Mr. Robot: Not anymore. You need to start seeing that for yourself.

Dominique: Unfortunately, I can't let you get away with this.

Mr. Robot: If you just calm down, I can tell you what's happening. You just have to listen.

Elliot: So... this is some kind of dream?
Mr. Robot: No. Not a dream. A prison.

Elliot: The real Elliot?

Mr. Robot: You're no more Elliot Alderson than I am. You're just like me, only a part of him.

Mr. Robot: You can't kill him... no matter how hard you try.

Elliot: If I'm not Elliot... Who the fuck am I?
Mr. Robot: You already know.

Angela: You're not Elliot. You're the mastermind.

Not-Krista: I understand why you're confused... I can explain everything if you let me.

Elliot: I guess she doesn't know about you.
Not-Krista: I know all about them too, the voyeurs who think they aren't a part of this despite being here for all of it.

Elliot: I don't want to hear this again.
Not-Krista: The truth about who you are? I think it's time. Even they agree with me.

Not-Krista: And now it's time for you to give that control back to the host... The real Elliot.

Elliot: This is real, isn't it?... Please tell me this isn't a dream.

Darlene: Guess it's official. You saved the world, Elliot Alderson.

Elliot: Hello, friend.

Elliot: Darlene... I'm not Elliot. I'm only a part of him.

Elliot: Come on. This only works if you let go too.

Mr. Robot — Series Finale Part 1

Mr. Robot 4×12

Elliot: Hello, friend. Hello, friend. Wait, you can hear me again? Have you been there this whole time?

Elliot: We're dead, right? There's no way we survived. But if we're dead... then how am I talking to you?

Elliot: Where are we?

Phillip Price: If I'm to be his father-in-law, he should be a little frightened of me.

Elliot: These images, I've seen them before. I've pictured this fantasy so many times. This is what normal people do when they're happy, right? Get married, start a family, surround themselves with people they love, with people that love them.

Emily Moss: Oh, well, this is weird. Elliot, it says that you're calling me.

Elliot: Everything in his life seems perfect. But nobody is as perfect as they seem.

Elliot: I'll find something. He can't be this happy. No one is.

Elliot: Haven't you been paying attention? Everyone has a secret. People are always hiding something: Their vulnerabilities, their fears, their shame.

Elliot: Everyone has a monster. The question is, what's his? .... And there it is, a hidden partition, a drive full of files he doesn't want anyone to see.

Elliot-2: Who are you?... What are you doing in my apartment? And why do you look like me?

Elliot-2: Sometimes when I get bored, I create people in my head... Like him. You know, someone with a more exciting life. Like a superhero, except his power would be computers. He'd a cybersecurity engineer by day, vigilante hacker by night... Is that what you are?

Elliot: And fsociety?
Elliot-2: That's just a dumb name I came up with for a hacker group. You know... fuck society?

Elliot: Why did you create this person?
Elliot-2: I guess... Sometimes I fantasize about being him.
Elliot: So you want to be him?
Elliot-2: No, not really. Look at him. He's angry. He has no life. He's alone. He's not normal... Oh, shit, man. I'm sorry.

Elliot: Shit, he can hear us.

Angela Moss: Oh, my God, Elliot. What have you done?

Angela Moss: Elliot, you always overthink everything. You have to finally let yourself be happy. That's all it takes. It's just a choice that you have to make, a switch that you have to flick on.

Angela Moss: Do you love me?
Elliot: Of course I love you. I've always loved you.
Angela Moss: Great, because I love you too. So how about it, then? You wanna start this new life with me or what?
Elliot: More than anything.
Angela Moss: Okay, then it's settled. I'll see you tomorrow.

Elliot: Please, don't judge me. This was inevitable.

Elliot: I had no other choice.

Spider (2002)

humus:

Terrence: Uh, the bedding in this house has a curious, uh... character. But one does grow... used to it after just a few years.
Spider: I—I—I will not— I will not be here that long.
Terrence: Nor did I expect to be, but... It is a loud world, and this is an island. But an island, sir, ruled by a tyrant queen, who has the power to send any one of us back to where we came from. The asylum, I mean.

Mrs. Wilkinson: How many shirts are you wearing? 1, 2, 3, 4! Now, really, is this absolutely necessary?
Terrence: Oh, indeed it is, madam. Clothes maketh the man. And... the less there is of the man, the more the need for clothes.

Joker (2019)

Arthur Fleck: Is it just me, or is it getting crazier out there?

Social Worker: Arthur, you're on seven different medications. Surely, they must be doing something.
Arthur Fleck: I just don't want to feel so bad anymore.

Thomas Wayne: It makes total sense to me. What kind of coward would do something that cold-blooded? Someone who hides behind a mask. Someone who is envious of those more fortunate than themselves, yet they're too scared to show their own face. And until those kind of people change for the better, those of us who have made something of our lives will always look at those who haven't as nothing but clowns.

Arthur Fleck: You don't listen, do you? I don't think you ever really hear me. You just ask the same questions every week. "How's your job? Are you having any negative thoughts?" All I have are negative thoughts, but you don't listen anyway. I said, for my whole life, I didn't know if I even really existed. But I do. And people are starting to notice.

Murray Franklin: All right, now, this next comic describes himself as a lifelong Gotham resident who from a young age was always told that his purpose in life was to bring laughter and joy into this cold, dark world. Um... Okay.

Arthur Fleck: Hi. What's your name?
Bruce Wayne: I'm Bruce.
Arthur Fleck: Bruce. I'm Arthur.

Arthur Fleck: It's so hard to just try and be happy all the time...

Arthur Fleck: You know what really makes me laugh? I used to think that my life was a tragedy... but now I realize it's a fucking comedy.

Arthur Fleck: Murray, one small thing... When you bring me out, can you introduce me as Joker?

Murray Franklin: So, can you tell us about this look? When we spoke earlier, you mentioned that this look is not a political statement. Is that right?
Arthur Fleck: That's right, Murray. I'm not political. I'm just trying to make people laugh.
Murray Franklin: And how's that going for you?

Murray Franklin: You been working on any new material? You wanna tell us a joke? Yeah? Okay... He's got a book. A book of jokes... Take your time. We got all night.

Besides, most people, when they come the first time, are wondering... if I think they're crazy. Don't worry. I'm required... to have three sessions before I can commit... That was a joke.

Claire Spencer: You. You think you're smart, don't you? You think you got away with it. Well, I know you killed her, you murdering son of a bitch!

Greef Karga: Trust me. Nothing can go wrong.

Cara Dune: Let's just kill him and get outta here.

Alex Le Domas: Without you, I'm...
Daniel Le Domas: One of us.

Daniel Le Domas: You don't belong in this family. I mean that as a compliment.

Grace: I can't believe that in half an hour... I will be a part of the Le Domas gaming... dynasty? Empire?
Alex Le Domas: "Dominion." We prefer "dominion."

Alex Le Domas: I'm serious, I'm serious, honey. I'm giving you an out. Right now.
Grace: No, thank you. I'm all the way in.

Grace: They did?
Becky Le Domas: Stand tall and fuck 'em. The only thing that matters is what Alex thinks. And that we know.

Grace: A game? What game?
Alex Le Domas: I don't know. Uh, you draw a card. Could be backgammon, croquet, checkers, for all I know...

Grace: If it gets your family to accept me, I will play the shit out... of checkers. I'm really good at it.

Aunt Helene: What does it say, girl?
Grace: Oh. It says... It says, "hide and seek." Are we really gonna play that?

Grace: So, there's no way for me to win, right?

Gretchen: I think I follow too many porn sites...

Jimmy: You see, I didn't try to fix your problem, I just empathized, like you taught me, like a girl.
Gretchen: I appreciate that. I feel very heard.

Lindsay: August 7... think about it: midpoint of summer, clear of any holidays. 9/11 is just around the corner.
Gretchen: Isn't August 7 your birthday?
Lindsay: I know it's Charlize Theron's... Huh! Weird, it's mine, too.

Jimmy: Look, we're getting married, we're just not having a wedding.

Gretchen: I have had my eye on this office for years, so I took advantage of the current cultural climate and enacted some personal reparations on behalf of women everywhere.
Lindsay: You "Me Too-ed" a dude for his office?

Lindsay: A bathroom in an office? It's like Inception for pooping.

Lindsay: I just wanted to tell you marriage is hard. Your wedding day is the one day it's fun. Seriously, it's all downhill after the wedding. That's just gravity. You're gonna go against gravity?

Gretchen: Eloping is fine because the point is being hitched, not getting hitched...

Lindsay: Oh, buddy. Oh, sweet, sweet buddy. Oh, sweet, sweet, sweet...
Edgar: What?!
Lindsay: Edgar, Jimmy is smart. And you're, well, Edgar.

Lindsay: The reason you think someone else is the dumb one of the group is because that's what the dumb one's supposed to think to protect them,

Edgar: I'm not the dumb one, you're the dumb one.

Gretchen: Yeah, I got 15 minutes. Let's do this, toilet...

Jimmy: If you truly knew us, you would understand the heterodox iconoclastic nature of a spontaneous elopement perfectly captures the renegade tale of our amorous union.

Gretchen: Omakase?

Jimmy: ..... And then a tasteful fireworks display over the ocean, scored to Mahler's Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen, would bring to a close the greatest wedding in the history of matrimony. Ranzar Malk: What's the look? Is that gratitude?.. Uh-huh. I think it is.

Mayfeld: Razor Crest? I can't believe that thing can fly. Looks like a Canto Bight slot machine.

Burg: So, this is a Mandalorian... I thought they'd be bigger.

Xi'an: Hello, Mando... Tell me why I shouldn't cut you down where you stand?

Burg: Tiny.

Zero: Despite recent modifications, the ship is still quite a mess. The power lines are leaking, the navigation is intermittent, and the hyperdrive is only operating at 67.3% efficiency.

Zero: Don't worry, Mandalorian. My response time is quicker than organics. And I'm smarter, too.

The Mandalorian: How can you trust it?
Ranzar Malk: You know me, Mando. I don't trust anybody.

Burg: Someone tell me why we even need a Mandalorian.
Mayfeld: Well, apparently they're the greatest warriors in the galaxy. So they say.
Burg: Then why are they all dead?

Mayfeld: I wonder what you look like under there... Maybe he's a Gungan.

Mayfeld: What is it, like a pet or somethin'?
The Mandalorian: Yeah. Something like that.

The Mandalorian: They got what they deserved.

Qin: You were hired to do a job, right? So do it... Isn't that your code? Aren't you a man of honor?

The Mandalorian: No questions asked. That's the policy, right?
Ranzar Malk: Yeah. That is the policy.
The Mandalorian: I did the job.
Ranzar Malk: Yeah, you did.
The Mandalorian: Just like the good old days.
Ranzar Malk: Yeah, just like the good old days.

The Mandalorian: I told you that was a bad idea...
