&  Опять же подчеркну, что это мое сегодняшнее прочтение тогдашних известий. Вернее, это то, что моя память на сегодняшний день сохранила от тогдашнего прочтения известий того времени.

&  В письме, оставленном на имя коронера, он изложил свою позицию: жизнь – это непрошеный подарок; мыслящий человек связан философским обязательством исследовать как природу жизни, так и ее необходимые условия; а коль скоро человек решает отказаться от непрошеного подарка, его нравственный и человеческий долг требует принять все последствия такого решения. В конце была приписка, означавшая практически «что и следовало доказать».

&  Один англичанин как-то сказал, что брак – это долгий и скучный обед, на котором десерт подается на первое.

&  Я выжил. «Он выжил и рассказал, как это было» – кажется, так говорится, да? История – вовсе не ложь победителей, как я в свое время грузил старине Джо Ханту; теперь я это твердо знаю. Это память выживших, из которых большинство не относится ни к победителям, ни к побежденным.


&  На склоне лет хочется немного отдохнуть, согласны? Мы ведь это заслужили. Я, например, именно так и думал. Но потом приходит понимание, что жизнь не торопится раздавать заслуженные награды. Кроме того, в молодости мы полагаем, что способны просчитать, какие болячки и горести могут прийти с возрастом. Мысленно рисуем одиночество, развод, вдовство, отдаление детей, кончину друзей. Предвидим потерю статуса, утрату влечений – и собственной привлекательности. Можно пойти еще дальше и рассмотреть приближение смерти, которую всегда встречаешь в одиночестве, даже если рядом близкие. Все это – взгляд в будущее. Но гораздо труднее не просто заглянуть в будущее, а из будущего оглянуться назад. Узнать, какие новые эмоции приносит с собой время. Обнаружить, например, что с уменьшением числа очевидцев становится все меньше доказательств твоей жизни, а потому и меньше уверенности в том, кто ты есть и кем был. Даже если скрупулезно вести архив – собирать дневники, звукозаписи, фотоматериалы, – впоследствии может оказаться, что фиксировать нужно было нечто совсем другое. Какое там изречение цитировал Адриан? «История – это уверенность, которая рождается на том этапе, когда несовершенства памяти накладываются на нехватку документальных свидетельств».

&  В молодые годы для нас любой человек едва за тридцать – пожилой, а кому больше полтинника, тот – старая развалина. И время, идя вперед, подтверждает, что не так уж мы ошибались. Мелкие различия во времени, критические и весьма ощутимые для молодых, стираются. Все мы в конце концов попадаем в одну возрастную категорию – в категорию немолодых.
     Но это правило – не без исключений. Для некоторых различия во времени, установленные по молодости лет, никуда не исчезают: старший остается старшим, хотя седые бороды у всех одинаковы. Для некоторых разрыв, скажем, в пять лет означает, что в извращенном восприятии один – или одна – из нас будет считать себя мудрее и разумнее, хотя факты свидетельствуют об обратном. Или, наверное, правильнее будет сказать: поскольку факты свидетельствуют об обратном. Поскольку это равновесие, как отчетливо видно со стороны, нарушилось в пользу чуть более молодой личности, более старшая личность будет оберегать свое мнимое превосходство все более истово. И все более нервозно.

&  Мы живем весьма примитивными допущениями, вы согласны? Например, что память включает в себя события плюс время. Однако не все так просто. Кто из великих сказал, что память – это то, что мы считали забытым? Пора бы нам усвоить, что время работает не как фиксаж, а скорее как растворитель. Но такое утверждение неудобно, не в нашу пользу, оно не помогает идти по жизни, поэтому мы его игнорируем.

&  Память моя с годами превратилась в механизм для штамповки одних и тех же впечатлений, похожих на истину.

&  Вы заметили, что в разговорах со служителями юстиции мы через некоторое время переходим на их язык?

&  Чем меньше времени остается нам из отпущенного срока, тем меньше у нас желания тратить его впустую. Логично, правда? Впрочем, как именно мы распорядимся сбереженными часами... да, это еще одна сфера, которую в молодости предугадать трудно. Я, например, подолгу занимаюсь уборкой, хотя нельзя сказать, что квартира у меня запущена. Но в этом состоит одна из маленьких радостей, которые приходят с возрастом. Я навожу порядок, без нужды ничего не выбрасываю, поддерживаю чистоту, делаю мелкий ремонт, чтобы квартира не упала в цене. У меня составлено завещание; отношения с дочкой, зятем, внуками и бывшей женой ровные, хотя и не безоблачные. По крайней мере, так я себе внушаю. Я достиг состояния бесконфликтности, даже безмятежности. Потому что живу в согласии со своей средой. Грязи не люблю и оставлять после себя грязь тоже не намерен. Если хотите знать, я завещал, чтобы меня кремировали.

&  Все мы существуем во времени – оно нас и формирует, и калибрует, но у меня такое ощущение, что я его никогда до конца не понимал. Не о том речь, что оно, согласно некоторым теориям, как-то там изгибается и описывает петлю или же течет где-то еще, параллельным курсом. Нет, я имею в виду самое обычное, повседневное время, которое рутинно движется вперед заботами настенных и наручных часов: тик-так, тик-так. Что может быть убедительнее секундной стрелки? Но малейшая радость или боль учит нас, что время податливо. Оно замедляется под воздействием одних чувств, разгоняется под напором других, а подчас вроде бы куда-то пропадает, но в конце концов достигает того предела, за которым и в самом деле исчезает, чтобы больше не вернуться.

&  – Существует мнение, что о любом историческом событии, даже, к примеру, о начале Первой мировой войны, можно с уверенностью сказать только одно: «нечто произошло».

&  В ту пору жилось проще: ни тебе больших денег, ни электронных гаджетов, ни тирании моды, ни девочек. Да все то, что составляет Литературу: любовь, секс, мораль, дружба, счастье, страдание, предательство, измена, добро и зло, геройство и подлость, вина и безвинность, честолюбие, власть, справедливость, революция, война, отцы и дети, противостояние личности и общества, успех и поражение, убийство, суицид, смерть, Бог. И сова.

&  – Давайте начнем с простого на первый взгляд вопроса: что такое История? Какие будут соображения, Уэбстер?
     – История – это ложь победителей.

Слушателям может показаться, что присутствие рассказчика в сновидениях спящего англичанина вносит в повествование элемент фантастичности. Однако вы тоже могли бы фигурировать в снах своих знакомых. Никогда не задумывались о том, в каком виде вы могли бы при этом перед ними предстать?..

&  – Замечали когда-нибудь, что бывают дни, когда на глаза попадается куда больше сумасшедших и калек, чем обычно?

&  На память пришло высказывание из «Сна Старого Паломника» о том, что двух вещей нельзя сделать во сне: посмотреть на тыльную сторону своих ладоней и вспомнить собственное имя.

&  ... придется на минутку умолкнуть, чтобы, достать из уха насекомое. Нет, это просто сера. Смотрите! Интересно, откуда берется это вещество? В нем наверняка есть примесь уличной пыли, но само воскообразное вещество попадает туда отнюдь не с улицы. Должно быть, оно образуется внутри головы – возможно, в мозгу.
