Remember the Monsters?

Dexter 8×12

& Quinn: You went through a bad time. But I fucked up too, Deb. A lot. But I think we get to make up for it, you know?
    Debra: Uhh. How?
Quinn: You do enough good in the world, it sort of cancels out the bad.

& Debra: I love you, Joey...
    Quinn: What’s that?

& Dexter: No, don’t start blaming yourself.
Debra: Coming from Mr. «I Screwed Up Your Life, Deb.»

& Dexter: I’ve never seen a miracle.

& Debra: Don’t you remember the monsters?
    Dexter: Uh, no.
Debra: Every time mom would turn off the lights, they’d be running all over the walls. And I couldn’t fuckin’ go to sleep ’cause I thought they were gonna eat me or something.
    Dexter: I don’t remember.
Debra: They were the shadows. You came in and explained it in your dorky little voice. You were like, «Oh, it’s just the absence of light, Deb.»

& Saxon: Is that why you’re here? Tell me all this?
Dexter: No, I’m here to kill you with that pen.

& Quinn: It’s obviously self-defense.

& Dexter: As much as I may have pretended otherwise, for so long, all I wanted was to be like other people. To feel what they felt. But now that I do, I just want it to stop.

The Adventure of the Nutmeg Concoction

Elementary 3×7

& Holmes: Behavioral Science Unit. Even the name is pompous.

& Holmes: Let me know when you’ve got it sorted.
    Watson: What, you’re not coming?
Holmes: I’m here to offer help, but trying one key in an ocean of doors, that’s scut work. No, my spirit of volunteerism is not without its limits.

& Watson: What are you humming?
    Kitty: Beethoven’s Sixth. Clarinet part.
Watson: I would not have pegged you as a classical music fan.
Kitty: My dad was the fan. Which meant I practiced four hours every day.

& Watson: You really expect the police to smell nutmeg?
Holmes: I expect nothing, which is why I’m such an exceptional detective.

& Holmes: The crimes aren’t connected by a common killer. They’re connected by a common cleaner.
Ω Ray Donovan?

& Holmes: Given your history, it’s hardly surprising you’ve allowed this to happen at the very same moment that your relationship with Andrew requires tending, effort. Naturally, you’ve opened yourself up to other opportunities. Much like a female baboon broadcasts her readiness with inflated genitals. You, Watson, are something of a romantic terrorist.

& — You three are cops?
    Holmes: To varying degrees.

& Holmes: You do realize I wasn’t criticizing you yesterday?
Watson: You compared me to a baboon with inflated genitals and then you called me a terrorist.
Holmes: I was using vivid imagery to illustrate a point. It was an attempt to be helpful.

& Holmes: You are progressing. A pleasure to watch. Normally, I ask you to keep your music at a reasonable level during my reading hours, but tonight feel free to enjoy it at whatever volume you wish.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

& Smaug: Who are you that would stand... against me? Now that is a pity. What will you do now... bowman?

& Smaug: Tell me, wretch, how now shall you challenge me? You have nothing left but your... death!

& Bilbo: You cannot go to war.
Thorin: This does not concern you.
Bilbo: Excuse me, but just in case you haven’t noticed, there is an army of Elves out there. Not to mention several hundred angry fishermen. W-w-we are in fact outnumbered.
    Thorin: Not for much longer.
    Bilbo: What does that mean?
Thorin: It means, Master Baggins, you should never underestimate Dwarves.

& Thranduil: If I’m not mistaken, this is the Halfling who stole... the keys to my dungeons from under the nose of my guards.
Bilbo: He is. Sorry about that.

& Thorin: Why would you do this? You owe us no loyalty.
Bilbo: I’m not doing it for you. I know that Dwarves can be obstinate... and pigheaded and... difficult. And suspicious and secretive... with the worst manners you can possibly... imagine, but they are also brave... and kind... and loyal to a fault. I’ve grown very fond of them, and I would save them if I can.

& Bilbo: I’m not afraid of Thorin.
Gandalf: Well, you should be. Don’t underestimate... the evil of gold.

& Thorin: Farewell, Master Burglar. Go back to your books and your armchair. Plant your trees, watch them grow. If more people valued home... above gold, this world would be a merrier place.

& Tauriel: If this is love, I do not want it. Take it from me, please? Why does it hurt so much?
    Thranduil: Because it was real.

& Bilbo: No, thank you! We don’t want any more visitors, well-wishers, or distant relations!
Gandalf: And what about... very old friends?

If I Stay

& Mia: ’At the age of 26, Ludwig van Beethoven went deaf, ending his career as a successful concert pianist. But determined not to let a little thing like his hearing end his music career, my pal Ludwig became a composer. Turned out the new gig suited him. It’s like one old saying, "Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.«

& Mom: Come on, you got to come with us. Come on, baby. Pretty soon you’re gonna be off to college, no matter where you’re going.

& Mom: I wonder where she gets that from...
Dad: Ah, naw, guys play music for two reasons. To get laid and because they got rage. But mostly to get laid.
Mom: Well, that’s probably not her motivation.
Dad: No. Exactly. She’s not doing it to get anything. She’s just doing it out of pure...
    Mom: We made that.

& Mia: Isn’t it amazing how life is one thing and then, in an instant it becomes something else? Like here I am, Mia. The girl who thinks about the cello and Adam, and whether a letter is waiting for me at home. And just like that...

& Mia: There are two types of people in this world, Kim. Those who like real coffee, and those who like froufrou drinks with ridiculous names.
Kim: Um, wow. You know, I’m not ashamed to be a cinnamon-spice chai latte lover. Thank you very much.

& Dad: Sometimes you make choices in life, and sometimes choices make you.

& Mia: «Even when they were just wasting time they weren’t wasting time. It was as if no time they spent together could ever be wasted.»
    Adam: Who said that?
Mia: Some guy in some book.
Adam: And what was he talking about?
Mia: Some couple in some movie. My point is... My point is he could have been talking about us.

& Mia: What am I gonna do? I am being completely torn in half.
Mom: You’re going to go to Juilliard and play the hell out of your cello. Or you’re not. You’re gonna stay with Adam and have lots of amazing adventures. Or you’re not. Or maybe tomorrow, the Earth’s gonna smash into a meteor. Or it’s not. Life is this big fat gigantic stinking mess. But that’s the beauty of it too... Whatever you do, I support you. Either way, you win. And also either way there’s something that you lose.

& Mom: What can I say, baby? True love’s a bitch.

& Gramps: Sacrifice. That’s what we do for the people that we love.

Give Santa a Tail-Hole

Two and a Half Men 10×11

& Alan: So, uh, listen, Sam Wilson, how are things in Poorville? Are you Les Misérables?

& Walden: You know, last night, Kate and I went shopping at the 99-cent store. That place is amazing. Did you know that everything there is 99 cents?
Alan: Know it? I registered there for my wedding.
Walden: Two cans of peaches, 99 cents. Four pack of yogurt, 99 cents. This owl-shaped mug? Ninety-nine cents. Guess how much the wine inside was?
Alan: Uh, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say 99 cents?
Walden: Seventy-nine cents. Dented box. Heh.

& Walden: How was your day?
Kate: It’s Christmas, Sam. Happy people, wishing you peace on Earth. It was horrible.
Walden: Somebody’s got a case of the Grinches.
Kate: No, it’s a case of nine-hour shifts listening to Celine Dion murder «O Holy Night.» If I ever meet that skinny bitch, I’m gonna beat the «O holy» crap out of her. And that’s what Christmas is all about.

& Kate: Tell me about your day.
Walden: After you left, I made some breakfast. I got the mail. I did some work on that app I’ve been developing. And then I did some serious research on World War II.
    Kate: Really?
Walden: I fell asleep watching the History Channel.

& Nick: By the way, your cell phone’s like your penis. When you’re at work, keep it in your pants.

& Walden: I got something else that’ll make you feel better.
    Kate: Yeah?
    Walden: Let’s get naked...
    Kate: Ah!
Walden: ...and play some reindeer games.

& Nick: You are a natural, kid. You remind me of a young me. Except you’re taller and better looking. And probably straight...
Walden: Where are we going with this?
    Nick: Apparently nowhere.

& Berta: Look at you. Drunk as your brother and none of the charm.

What If

& Chantry: I don’t think you can have Princess Bride as one of your favorite movies if you actually think love makes you a worse person.
Wallace: Well, no, it’s irrelevant. The Princess Bride is a fairy tale. In fairy tales, love inspires you to be noble and courageous, but in real life, love is just an all-purpose excuse for selfish behavior. You can lie and cheat and hurt people, and it’s all okay because you’re in love.

& Wallace: ...So I found this website where they explain what Fool’s Gold is. You take... a loaf of Italian white bread, you coat it in butter and bake it. Then you hollow out the inside and coat it with an entire jar of peanut butter, and an entire jar of jam. Then you stuff it with a pound of crispy bacon. The website said it serves eight to ten people, or one Elvis.

& Chantry: Wallace!
    Wallace: Yes?
    Chantry: Are you alone?
    Wallace: Like, in the universe?
    Chantry: No, in the hallway!

& Allan: I just had sex. I’m about to eat nachos! It’s the greatest moment of my life! Unless you screw it up with whatever you’re about to say.

& Allan: A hundred percent honesty is the foundation of any relationship.
Wallace: You are a hundred percent honest with Nicole?
    Allan: Yes. Yep. About everything.
Wallace: New Orleans, 2006? What was her name?.. Favia? Yeah, she did look like a woman, to be fair.
Allan: Ninety-nine percent honesty is the foundation of any relationship.

& Nicole: God, what’s the best-case scenario? «Wallace, I love you. Let’s have sex forever until we die having sex»?
Wallace: That is the best-case scenario.
Nicole: Okay, and what’s the worst-case scenario? «Wallace, you shit-drizzling liar. This whole time, you’ve just been trying to put your junk inside my trunk.»
Wallace: Anything involving the phrase «put your junk inside my trunk» actually would be the worst-case scenario.
Nicole: Look, the one thing I like about getting married is that you get to stand up in front of everyone you care about and state, for the record, that you believe in the best-case scenario. It terrifies me, but that’s why the outfits are so nice.

& Allan: It’s complicated. All this love shit’s complicated. And that’s good. Because if it’s too simple, you’ve got no reason to try. And if you got no reason to try, you don’t. Wait, I just described you.

& Chantry: My God, what did you do to yourself?
    Wallace: Ninja attack.

& Chantry: So... when I said «I have a boyfriend and I just want to be friends» and you said that’s what you wanted too, that was a lie?
Wallace: No. No. I wanted that to be true. But it wasn’t.
Chantry: You never wanted to be my friend.
Wallace: We are friends. I haven’t just been trying to put my junk inside your trunk.

& Felix: Can I talk to you?
Wallace: Felix, I said not right now! I’m having a bad life.

& Wallace: What’s wrong? What’s wrong? Are you choking? Okay, I’m gonna try and Heimlich you.

& Wallace: I’m getting back to the life I was supposed to have by now.
Allan: When you’re old and wrinkled and your penis doesn’t work anymore... Not that it’s in great shape now. But in that old, wrinkled, dickless future, will this seem like the right call?

& Wallace: I don’t want the sex to be too good right away. I’m intentionally being much worse in bed than I actually am so that it can just keep getting better forever.
Chantry: But, like, very slowly, over many, many decades so that we hit our sexual peak in our 90th.
Wallace: Yeah. That’s the plan, actually, is if the last time we have sex is also the best and that it actually kills you.
Chantry: That wouldn’t be such a bad way to go.

All social systems we put into place are mere ’sketch’. 1 + 1 = 2 That’s all we learned. But 1 + 1 has never equaled 2. They’re in fact, no numbers and no letters. We codify our existence to bring it down to human size to make it comprehensible. We created the scale so that we can forget its unfathomable scale.
Professor Norman: But if humans are not the unit of measure, and the world isn’t governed by mathematical laws, what governs all that?
Lucy: Form a car speeding down the road... speed up the image infinitely and the car disappears. So, what proof do we have of its existence?.. Time gives legitimacy to its existence. Time is the only true unit of measure. It gives proof to the existence of matter. Without time, we don’t exist. Time is ’unity’.

& Lucy: Life was given to us a billion years ago. Now you know what you can do with it.

Predestination

Idiocracy

& Narrator: Most science fiction of the day predicted a future that was more civilized... and more intelligent. But as time went on, things seemed to be heading in the opposite direction. A dumbing down. How did this happen? Evolution does not necessarily reward intelligence. With no natural predators to thin the herd... it began to simply reward those who reproduced the most... and left the intelligent to become an endangered species.

& Joe: I don’t want a new assignment. I tell Sergeant Metsler that every time. I’m good at this.
Sgt. Keller: Good at what? Sittin’ on ass? No one ever comes in here.
Joe: Yeah, I know. It’s perfect for me. No one bothers me. I can’t screw up.

& Joe: Jesus. I don’t understand. Why me? Every time Metsler says, «Lead, follow, or get out of the way,» I get out of the way.
Sgt. Keller: When he says that, you’re not supposed to choose «get out of the way.» It’s supposed to embarrass you into leading or at least following.
    Joe: That doesn’t embarrass me.

& Joe: Just go ahead and lie down. Relax. See you in a year.

& Narrator: ...the years passed... and mankind became stupider at a frightening rate. Some had high hopes that genetic engineering... would correct this trend in evolution. But sadly, the greatest minds and resources... were focused on conquering hair loss and prolonging erections.

& Hospital Technician: Uh, this goes in your mouth. This one goes in your ear. And this one goes in your butt... Shit. Hang on a second. This one— No. Uh— This one. This one goes in your mouth.

& Narrator: The economy was in a state of deep neglect. A great dust bowl had ravaged food supplies. And the number one movie in the country was called Ass. And that’s all it was for 90 minutes. It won eight Oscars that year, including best screenplay.

& Identity Processing Program of America: ’You have entered the name «Not Sure.» Is this correct, Not Sure?’
Joe: No, it’s not. My name is Joe—
IPPA: You’ve already confirmed your first name is Not. Please confirm your last name, «Sure.»
Joe: My— My last name is not Sure.
    IPPA: Thank you, Not Sure.
Joe: No. What I mean is my name is Joe.
IPPA: Confirmation is complete. Please wait while I tattoo your new identity on your arm.

& Presenter: Dwayne Elizondo Camacho, five-time Ultimate Smackdown Champion... porn superstar, and president of the United States...

& Joe: It’s a weird feeling being smarter than everyone.
    Rita: Mm-hmm.
Joe: I’m not used to it.
Rita: Yeah. Me neither. You think Einstein walked around thinkin’ everyone was a bunch of dumb shits?
Joe: Yeah. Hadn’t thought of that.
Rita: Now you know why he built that bomb.

& Joe: Look, you wanna pay me back? Just go back, okay? Tell people to read books. Tell people to stay in school, you know. Tell people to just use their brains or something.

& Joe: You know, there was a time in this country... when smart people were considered cool. Well, maybe not cool, but smart people did things... like build ships and pyramids, and they even went to the moon. And there was a time in this country, a long time ago... when reading wasn’t just for fags... and neither was writing. People wrote books and movies, movies that had stories... so you cared whose ass it was and why it was farting. And I believe that time can come again!

The Borgia Bull

The Borgias 2×1

& Lucrezia: This child, Holy Father, lacks a father. Or one appropriate to your station.
Borgia: And for the moment you have no need of a marital alliance.
Lucrezia: But if the need arose, you would marry me to the moon.
Borgia: What? Does the sun threaten our papacy now?
Lucrezia: No, Father. Mars is in a unique alignment with Saturn. The heavens beam down upon us. For the moment. But the day might come.

& Borgia: We would have the ambassador gently remind the king that Naples has the habit of rejecting those who would conquer it. The Moor, the Turk, the Norman... Why should the French be any different?

& Juan: Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord...
Borgia: Ah. Vengeance will be ours.

& Borgia: Will you stop this discord! We are family! We are one! And we will only triumph as one!

& Borgia: For we have a second task. It is called renewal. We would restore Rome to its former glory. Under the Borgias it will shine as it did beneath the Caesars...

& Borgia: We must preserve these. For posterity.
    Giulia Farnese: Not for pleasure?
Borgia: No. You alone are our pleasure.
    Giulia Farnese: Indeed.

& Cesare: Impossible loves. I am very much afraid they can become an addiction.

& Lucrezia: There is one your heart must find room for, Cesare. One you must love before you can love anyone.
Cesare: And that one would be?..
    Lucrezia: Yourself.

& Giulia Farnese: What is that?
Borgia: Apis. Sacred bull of the goddess Isis. Could be the Borgia Bull... Some say that Isis is the predecessor of our own Blessed Virgin Mary.
Giulia Farnese: We are all to worship Isis now?
Borgia: No. But we could find a way to worship more like the ancient. With joy.

& Giulia Farnese: You would give them bread and circuses again?
Borgia: No, no. We would give them what is lacking in their lives... Joy.

& Vittoria: I am as yet a mere artisan. Any moment I can snatch to perfect my line, I do.
    Borgia: You are apprenticed?
Vittoria: To the master of Bramante, Your Holiness. But I am as yet the least of his pupils.

& Borgia: You’re very young.
    Vittoria: But youth fades.
    Borgia: Beauty doesn’t.

& Vittoria: I beg you, my lady!
Giulia Farnese: Yes. You may yet beg. And I am your lady. At least the pope is not tempted with the sin of sodomy.

& Juan: Who are you tonight, Father?
Borgia: We are Janus. The guardian of the keys of Rome. Of the gateway to paradise.
Juan: So there’s no pope here tonight?
Borgia: The pope has have two faces, my son. One looks to the future and the other to the past. We are the gatekeeper to both.

& Giulia Farnese: You are now Aphrodite.
    Vittoria: Lover of Hermes.
    Giulia Farnese: Mother of Hermaphrodite.

& King Charles VIII: It almost harmonizes. Sing, sing.

& Dandy: I see a man. With his arms torn off. His insides are outside for all the world to see.
    Dr. Feinbloom: And... this one?
Dandy: Oh, that one’s easy. A man is stabbing a woman to death. Her blood is smeared all over the wall. It’s going to be a very messy cleanup. I’m bored... What’s my score? Mother said you wanted to test my genius IQ.

& Dandy: Tell me, do you think it’s possible to take someone’s power by eating their flesh? Or could you do it just by... bathing in their blood?

& Elsa: You see, that’s how it works. Your mother lives because the show will always go on.
