Jeeves and Wooster 2x3

The Con*
(or, Pearls Mean Tears)

Season 2, Episode 3

& Wooster: Have you ever noticed a rummy* thing about life, Jeeves?
    Jeeves: No, sir.
Wooster: Just when you're feeling at your most braced about things, something comes along and gives it to you in the neck.
    Jeeves: Very true, sir.

& Jeeves: Did you have a pleasant afternoon, sir?
Wooster: You have a cruel streak*, Jeeves. I hadn't realized it before. What blighter* was it that invented the bicycle?
Jeeves: The first truly rideable machine was made by a Mr Kirkpatrick Macmillan of Dumfriesshire in Scotland in 1839, I believe, sir.
Wooster: Too late to do anything about it now, I suppose.
    Jeeves: I fear so, sir.

& Wooster: Jeeves! The pearls have gone.
    Jeeves: Good heavens, sir.
Aline Hemmingway: Whatever can have happened to them?
Wooster: Whatever could have happened to them?
    Jeeves: Echo answers, "Whatever, sir?"

& Wooster: Biffy, old mate, as man to man, do you want to haul out of this thing?
Biffy: Bertie, old cock, as one friend to another, I do. It just sort of happened. You know how it is when your heart's broken, you get absent-minded and cease to exercise proper precautions.
    Wooster: Yes, I know.
Biffy: I want you to tell me the procedure. But I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.
    Wooster: Of course not.
Biffy: But what do you recommend?
Wooster: Sir Roderick discovered there was a modicum* of insanity in my family, so the old boy came out to dinner to give me the once-over and Jeeves arranged things so he went away convinced I was completely off it.
Biffy: I see. The trouble is there isn't any insanity in my family.
    Wooster: Really?

& Wooster: Well, when it comes to helping a chum*, we, Woosters, have no thought of self. Meanwhile, I'll consult Jeeves. He's never failed me yet.

& Wooster: If you're not going to save a fellow creature, I suppose I can't make you. You'll look silly, when I get old Biffy out of the soup without your assistance.
Jeeves: I shall try to bear up under the shame of it, sir.

& Wooster: Was that the doorbell, Jeeves?
Jeeves: It certainly gave that impression, sir.
Wooster: Who could that be at this time of night?
Jeeves: I shall endeavour* to ascertain*, sir.
