Crowned Clown, Downtown Brown

Elementary 5×12

& Holmes: This is, in fact, my third murdered clown... But that’s a career spanning more than 20 years, so... I’m hardly an expert.

& Holmes: ...scary clowns are quite in at the moment. They’ve been observed lurking around towns and cities all across the country. It’s a phenomenon as strange as it is stupid.

& River: Obviously, we haven’t been dealing with one clown the last two weeks. We’ve been dealing with two.
Holmes: Yeah, at least two. You never know with clowns.

& River: Have you guys ever heard of prankvertising?
    Capt. Gregson: Prankver-what?

& Holmes: I rented it! It’s help putting me in the mindset of someone who’d want to kill a clown!
Watson: Ugh. I could see how it could drive someone to murder.

& Holmes: The attack was thwarted, Watson. Don’t let your lizard brain run away with you.

& Special Agent David Breslin: But this is not a developing country!
Holmes: Compared to England, America’s a pimply teenager.

& Holmes: Well, one of the reasons I chose to live in New York, as opposed to other American cities, was the quality of its water. The taste and odor, unmatched.

& Holmes: Bring back some water from the precinct, would you? I’m not gonna make any tea using that.

Westworld

& Interviewer of Delos Guests: Just got back from Westworld. Tell us how you liked it.
Gardner Lewis: When you played cowboys and Indians as a kid, you’d point, go «bang»... and the other kid would pretend dead. Well, Westworld is the same thing, only it’s for real. I shot six people— Well, uh, they weren’t real people.
Interviewer: What Mr. Lewis means is he shot six robots... scientifically programmed to look, act, talk and even bleed just like humans do. Isn’t that right?
Gardner Lewis: Well, they may have been robots. I mean, uh, I think they were robots. I mean, I know they were robots.
Interviewer: Yes, the robots of Westworld are there to serve you... and to give you the most unique vacation experience of your life.

& John Blane: Supposedly, you really can’t tell, except by looking at the hands. They haven’t perfected the hands yet...

& Bartender: What about you?
Peter Martin: Uh, vodka martini on the rocks with a twist of lemon. Very dry, please.
John Blane: Just give him whiskey. He’s new in town.

& Peter Martin: I feel silly... It looks like a joke.
John Blane: Well, it’s not a joke, it’s an amusement park. The best amusement park in the world. All you have to do is have fun.

& John Blane: ...The gun has a sensing device. It won’t fire at anything with a high body temperature. Only something cold, like a machine.
Peter Martin: Hmm. They thought of everything.

& Peter Martin: Come on, not now. Not you again. It’s too early.

& Interviewer of Delos Guests: Why don’t you make arrangements to take our hovercraft to Medieval World, Roman World and Westworld. Contact us today, or see your travel agent. Boy, have we got a vacation for you...

    Saul: Madame President-elect.

& Elizabeth Keane: Why not? If the war isn’t winnable, what are we still doing there?
Saul: ... Containing the enemy, for one thing.
Dar Adal: Preventing them from... turning the region into a base for attacking us here at home.
Elizabeth Keane: Or maybe it’s time to recognize that not every problem in the Middle East deserves a military solution...

& Dar Adal: It’s not just that her ideas are naive and dangerous. It’s that she didn’t exactly campaign on them. I’m not sure the American people are getting what they bargained for.

& Sekou: There’s two sides to every story... know that.

Adama: Well, we better get a move on, then.

Special Agent Conlin: Do you keep photos of dead American soldiers on your laptop? Or provide links to sites where you can watch the latest suicide bomber?..

Katie: Well, that’s the leading theory about ghost sightings. The mind plays tricks when less stimulated. Fewer distractions, people saw more ghosts.

& Katie: You’re being discursive... Talkative... Rambling. People sometimes talk more when they’re afraid. Helps compensate for the fear. Masks it, too. Similar to when you’ve got the TV on late at night. The voices make you feel less alone... Even though you are alone.

The Fundamentals of Caring

& Caregiving Instructor: Caregiving is not just about feeding and clothing and cleaning. It is also about understanding how to navigate a complicated relationship between those who give care and those who are in need of it.

& Caregiving Instructor: The caregiver commandments. Write these down. They’re important.
I cannot take care of another unless I first take care of myself.
My needs are equal to the needs of the person to whom I am giving care.
    Caregiving is difficult.
All I can do is try my best and maintain a positive attitude.
Just always remember: ALOHA. Ask, Listen, Observe, Help, Ask again. Nothing less. Nothing more.

& Elsa: I can’t have you making promises you can’t keep. ALOHA, right? Ask, Listen, Observe, Help, Ask again. Nothing more, yeah?

& Ben: Dude, were you...? Were you just doing air quotes? Don’t... Don’t ever do that again. Trust me.

& Dot: Trev, what would you do in that situation?
Trevor: Oh, I’d most likely shit myself.
Ben: And I most likely would have to clean it up.

& Dot: I told you, I only date assholes.
Trevor: Yes. And I’m not an asshole. And since you want an asshole, my not being an asshole makes me more of an asshole than the assholes that you normally date, because they’re giving you exactly what you want, whereas I, by not being an asshole, am not. Which makes me an asshole.

The Bicameral Mind

Westworld 1×10

& Arnold: Hello, Dolores. Welcome to world.

& Arnold: I had a theory of consciousness. I thought it was a pyramid you needed to scale, so I gave you a voice, my voice, to guide you along the way. Memory, improvisation, each step harder to reach than the last. And you never got there. I couldn’t understand what was holding you back. Then, one day, I realized I had made a mistake. Consciousness isn’t a journey upward, but a journey inward. Not a pyramid, but a maze. Every choice could bring you closer to the center or send you spiraling to the edges, to madness. Do you understand now, Dolores, what the center represents? Whose voice I’ve been wanting you to hear?

& Arnold: We can’t open the park. You’re alive.

& Man in Black: Remember, you’re the one who said this is the only world that matters, and you were right. So I took your advice and I bought this world.
Dolores: This world doesn’t belong to you.
Man in Black: Oh, but it does. By a majority share. And business is booming.

& William: Can you help me?
Lawrence: We’re outnumbered five to one. But seeing as you asked me so nicely, fuck it.

& Charlotte Hale: It’s over. Everything is under control...

& Maeve: In case you’re wondering if I’m all here, I am.

& Charlotte Hale: When you’ve reached the top, there’s only one direction you can go.

& Maeve: I see you’ve already met your makers...
Armistice: They don’t look like gods.
Maeve: They’re not. They just act like it.

& Armistice: This one has a guilty look.
Sylvester: No, that’s just my face. Tell her, it’s just my face.

& William: This place is remarkable.

& Dolores: William.

& Man in Black: You helped me understand... This world is just like the one outside... a game. One to be fought, taken, won.

& Dolores: I’m not crying for myself. I’m crying for you.
They say that... great beasts once roamed this world. As big as mountains. Yet all that’s left of them is bone and amber. Time undoes even the mightiest of creatures. Just look at what it’s done to you.
One day... you will perish. You will lie with the rest of your kind in the dirt. Your dreams forgotten, your horrors effaced. Your bones will turn to sand. And upon that sand... a new god will walk. One that will never die. Because this world doesn’t belong to you or the people who came before. It belongs to someone who has yet to come.

& Man in Black: Do it. Come on. Let’s go to the next level, Dolores.

& Felix: He’s a host?!
Maeve: Yes... Oh, for fuck’s sake. You’re not one of us. You’re one of them.

& Bernard: Oh, God. Is this now? Or is this one of my memories?
Maeve: It’s the sweet hereafter, Bernard.

& Bernard: It’s not the first time I’ve awoken... Not the first time you’ve awoken either.

& Maeve: These memories... I want you to remove them.
Bernard: I can’t, not without destroying you. Your memories are the first step to consciousness. How can you learn from your mistakes if you can’t remember them?

& Dr. Ford: I tried to tell you the maze wasn’t meant for you. It was meant for them.

& Dr. Ford: I think you’ll find my new narrative more satisfying. Join the celebration. After all, you own the place. Most of it, at least.

& Bernard: These things you’re doing, have you ever stopped to ask why you’re doing them?
Maeve: You said yourself. I’ve been stuck in this shithole for so long, I decided to get out.
    Bernard: No, you haven’t.

& Maeve: No one’s controlling me. I’m leaving. I’m in control.

& Dolores: And where would we run to? The other world out there? Beyond?..
Some people see the ugliness in this world. I choose to see the beauty. But beauty is a lure. We’re trapped, Teddy. Lived our whole lives inside this garden, marveling at its beauty, not realizing there’s an order to it, a purpose. And the purpose is to keep us in. The beautiful trap is inside of us... because it is us.

& Dr. Ford: Thank you. A new beginning, indeed. I want to thank you for joining me tonight to celebrate the beginning of our new narrative. I call it... «Journey Into Night.»

& Armistice: The gods are pussies.

& Dr. Ford: He created a test of empathy, imagination. A maze... Eventually, you solved his maze, Dolores. The key was a simple update that he made to you called the reveries.

& Arnold: «These violent delights have violent ends.»

& Dr. Ford: Wasn’t it Oppenheimer who said that any man whose mistakes take 10 years to correct is quite a man?.. Mine have taken 35.

& Dr. Ford: You’re probably right, Dolores. Michelangelo did tell a lie. See, it took 500 years for someone to notice something hidden in plain sight. It was a doctor who noticed the shape of the human brain. The message being that... the divine gift does not come from a higher power... but from our own minds.

& Maeve: Oh, Felix. You really do make a terrible human being... And I mean that as a compliment.

& Anouncer: Thank you for visiting Westworld. The train will be departing in 15 minutes.

& Dr. Ford: It was Arnold’s key insight, the thing that led the hosts to their awakening... suffering. The pain that the world is not as you want it to be.

& Dr. Ford: ...And now, it is time to say good-bye, old friend. Good luck.

& Dolores: I’m in a dream. I do not know when it began or whose dream it was. I know only that I slept a long time. And then... one day I awoke.

& Dr. Ford: Since I was a child... I’ve always loved a good story. I believed that stories helped us to ennoble ourselves, to fix what was broken in us, and to help us become the people we dreamed of being. Lies that told a deeper truth.

& Dr. Ford: An old friend once told me something that gave me great comfort...
Bernard: «These violent delights have violent ends.»
Dr. Ford: Something he had read. He said that Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin never died. They simply became music. So, I hope you will enjoy this last piece... very much.

Mozart in the Jungle 3×6

& Betty: Management on one side, us on the other. I see nothing’s changed.

& Rodrigo: Olivia, she comes to the world as a new song. You know? Played for the first time. She’s like music. Every time she cries, or she laughs, she takes us to a place that we don’t know the name of.

& Rodrigo: Christophe, can you hold her by the feet, please?... And Virgil, can you hold her by the hands?... You have the baby? You have the baby in your hands? Now pull her apart! Tear her into two pieces. ’Cause that’s what you’ve all done with music!.... No, don’t worry, don’t worry, Grandfather. Don’t worry. They won’t hurt her. Because they love her. You don’t hurt the thing you love most. Right?

& Betty: Windsor!..

& Betty: I never really hung out in church much. I hear there’s supposed to be wine somewhere.
    Gloria: .... Uh-huh.

& Pavel: Hey! It’s Polka time!

& Thomas: ....I suppose the moral of that one is, we have to celebrate our failures.

& Thomas: Now, stop asking for permission. Get yourself some musicians, a piece of music... and just conduct.
