Hazard Pay

Breaking Bad 5×3

& Saul: Mike’s okay? He said he was gonna break my legs. And don’t tell me he didn’t mean it, okay? ’Cause he gave me the dead mackerel eyes. He meant it.
Walter: Saul, Mike threatened me. He threatened Jesse. He probably threatened someone before breakfast this morning. It’s what he does. Come on. Grow a pair.
Saul: Let it be noted that I do this under duress!
    Walter: Duly noted.

& Mike: Now that we’re all together, here are the ground rules... Division of labor... I handle the business. Making the stuff... that’s your end. I don’t tell you how to mix your chemicals and whatnot, and you do not tell me how to take care of business. Is that absolutely clear?
    Walter: Sure.
Mike: All right. Let’s take the tour.
Saul: Hey, you’re okay with that?
Walter: Yes. He handles the business, and I handle him.
Ω That’s it! Walter handles them all.

& Walter: It’s challenging but doable.

& Mike: So, do we take a vote?
    Walter: Why?

& Mike: From time to time, you’re gonna see these two. Now, as far as you’re concerned, they are ghosts. You don’t see them. You don’t hear them. You don’t say “good morning.” You don’t speak unless you’re spoken to. On the other hand, if they tell you to jump, you don’t ask what for, you jump. Now, you need a name for them? You call them “yes, sir” and “no, sir.”

& Walter: Secrets create barriers between people. I’m speaking from experience, believe me. All that you’ve done, it’s a part of you, and... I mean, if you choose to spend the rest of your life with this person, then you’ll have to decide how much you’ll share with her.

& Marie: It’s time to tell me the truth, Walt. All of it. I mean it.

& Walter: 137,000... That’s less than with Fring.
Mike: Listen, Walter. Just because you shot Jesse James... don’t make you Jesse James.

& Walter: I’ve been thinking about Victor...
    Jesse: Yeah?
Walter: Yeah. All this time I was sure that Gus did what he did to send me a message. Maybe there’s another reason...
    Jesse: Like what?
Walter: Victor trying to cook that batch on his own?.. Taking liberties that weren’t his to take?.. Maybe he flew too close to the sun, got his throat cut...

Gangster Squad

& O’Mara: Every man carries a badge. Some symbol of his allegiance. His were the scars of a boxer who’d used his fists to climb the social ladder of the mob. A Jew who’d gained the respect of wops through a homicidal lust. He’d sworn an oath of violence. And his master? His own insatiable will to power. He wanted to own this town. His name is Mickey Cohen. On my badge... is the city of Los Angeles.

& O’Mara: Fighting the war had taught me... the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

& Sgt. Hendricks: O’Mara, for chrissakes, that’s Cohen’s place. Nobody goes in there. I don’t want any part of this.
O’Mara: Go get an ice cream.

& Wooters: What happened to you this time?
    O’Mara: He resisted.
Wooters: Oh, yeah? What happened to them?
    O’Mara: They resisted.
    Wooters: You’re working too hard.

& Connie O’Mara: I married an honest cop. You’re kind, you don’t talk too much, you’re a demon in the sack. But I don’t need a hero, sarge, I need a husband. So you do not have permission to go belly-flop on a grenade.

& O’Mara: I’m supposed to recruit a few guys for this new outfit.
Connie: Oh, yeah? What kind of outfit?
O’Mara: A small squad. Five, maybe six guys.
    Connie: What kind of outfit?
O’Mara: We’re going after Mickey Cohen.

& Jack: He’s my friend, Grace. I’ve known him all my life. He’s a sheep in wolf’s clothing. He’s got a smart mouth... but he’s dumb where it counts.

& Dragna: You got all the prestige, the purse, the pussy any man could ask for... and you go and you poke Chicago in the eye. Why?
Cohen: More. I want more, Jack.

& Cohen: I’m not gonna carry water for you anymore. You dumb kike. You’re old, you’re slow. I’ve outgrown you.
Dragna: I might be getting old, I might be getting slow... but I got friends in Chicago that are neither...
Cohen: This isn’t Chicago. This is the Wild fucking West! And I’ve been reading about it. You heard of Manifest Destiny? That’s when you take what you can when you can. The greasers took it from the redskins and we took it from them. And I’m gonna take it all from you, Jack, and not just because I can. But because this is my destiny. Los Angeles is my fucking destiny, you motherfucker.

& — You can’t shoot me. You’re a cop.
    Wooters: Not anymore.

& Harris: Bwana’s a Swahili word. Means “sir.” Got it?

& Kennard: Don’t shoot where it is, son. Shoot where it’s gonna be.

& Grace: I’m open to suggestions.
    Wooters: Don’t go.
    Grace: Don’t let me.

& Wooters: You sure we can pull this off?
    O’Mara: No.
    Wooters: Let’s do it then.

& Keeler: You know, I signed up for this... so that I could tell my boy that I at least tried to do something about it. But I hope he never finds out about all the things we’ve done.
O’Mara: Con, we did what we had to do.
Keeler: Can you remind me of the difference between us and them? Because at this point, I can’t tell anymore.

& Wooters: You’re a good man, John. You might even be a fucking angel. Either way you’re a hero.
O’Mara: You lose everything and you win the war... you’re a hero. You lose everything and you lose the war... you’re just a fool.

& Cohen: I like having only one fork. You never make the wrong decision.

& Cohen: Here comes Santy Claus.

Walk of Punishment

Game of Thrones 3×3

& Blackfish: We seem to be running short of patience here.
Robb: You know who isn’t?.. Tywin Lannister.

& Tyrion: Intimate. Lovely table. Better chairs than the old small council chamber. Conveniently close to your own quarters. I like it.

& Tywin: I’m naming you new Master of Coin.
    Tyrion: Master of Coin?
Tywin: It would appear to be a position that best suits your talents.
Tyrion: I’m quite good at spending money, but a lifetime of outrageous wealth hasn’t taught me much about managing it.
Cersei: I have no doubt you will prove equal to this challenge.

& Jaime: Let them have what they want. What does it matter?
    Brienne: What does it matter?
Jaime: Close your eyes. Pretend they’re Renly.
Brienne: If you were a woman, you wouldn’t resist? You’d let them do what they wanted?
Jaime: If I was a woman, I’d make them kill me. But I’m not, thank the gods.

& Hot Pie: It’s not me the Brotherhood wants. My brother ain’t no king. I’m not a Stark of Winterhell.
    Arya: Winterfell.
    Hot Pie: You sure?

& Blackfish: It often comforts me to think that even in war’s darkest days, in most places in the world absolutely nothing is happening.

& Martyn Lannister: Is it true what they say about him?
Talisa: I don’t know. What do they say about him?
Martyn: That he can turn into a wolf at night.
    Talisa: True.
Martyn: And he eats the flesh of his enemies.
Talisa: True. You’re a Lannister, aren’t you?.. Martyn Lannister. You’ve nothing to fear. My husband doesn’t eat children... Unless it’s a full moon. It’s not a full moon tonight, is it?.. See? Nothing to fear.

& Melisandre: Your fires burn low, my king.

& Melisandre: You will sit on the Iron Throne, but first there must be sacrifices. The Lord of Light demands it.

& Ser Jorah: If you want to sit on the throne your ancestors built, you must win it. That will mean blood on your hands before the thing is done.

& Ser Jorah: There’s a beast in every man and it stirs when you put a sword in his hand.

& Daenerys: You’re both here to advise me. I value your advice, but if you ever question me in front of strangers again, you’ll be advising someone else. Is that understood?

& Daenerys: I offered water to one of the slaves dying on the Walk of Punishment. Do you know what he said to me?.. “Let me die.”
Missandei: There are no masters in the grave, Your Grace.

& Daenerys: What about you? You know that I’m taking you to war. You may go hungry. You may fall sick. You may be killed.
    Missandei: Valar morghulis.
Daenerys: Yes, all men must die... But we are not men.

& Baelish: I hear you owe that boy a significant debt.
Tyrion: Only my life. Not all that significant, I’m afraid.

& Tyrion: Any advice for me on my new position?
    Baelish: Keep a low profile.
Tyrion: If I had a gold dragon for every time I heard that joke, I’d be richer than you are.

& Baelish: They’re only numbers. Numbers on paper. Once you understand that, it’s easy to make them behave. Trivial even.

& Tyrion: For years I’ve heard that Littlefinger is a magician. Whenever the crown needs money, he rubs his hands together and, poof, mountains of gold.
Bronn: Let me guess. He’s not a magician.
    Tyrion: No.
    Bronn: He’s stealing it?
    Tyrion: Worse, he’s borrowing it.

& Bronn: I’ve never borrowed money before. I’m not clear on the rules.
Tyrion: Well... The basic principle is I lend you money, and after an agreed upon period of time, you return it with interest.
Bronn: And what if I don’t?
    Tyrion: Well, you have to.
Bronn: But what if I don’t?
Tyrion: This is why I don’t lend you money.

& Bronn: They’re paid to seem to like it.
Tyrion: Only they weren’t paid... What are you saying? These ladies enjoyed him so much, they gave him the time for free?.. Is that what you’re telling us?.. Sit down, Podrick. We’re going to need details. Copious details.

& Come, my lord. You’re a long way from home and winter is coming.

& Jaime: Lord Selwyn would pay his daughter’s weight in sapphires if she’s returned to him. But only if she’s alive... her honor unbesmirched.
Roose Bolton: Bring her back here... Unbesmirched.
    Jaime: Not defiled.
Roose Bolton: Fancy word for a fancy man.
Jaime: I hated to read as a child, but my father forced me to study the books every morning before I could practice with sword or horse. Two hours every day holed up in the maester’s chambers. I learned a lot of fancy words.

& Jaime: Fighting bravely for a losing cause is admirable. Fighting for a winning cause is far more rewarding.

A Good Marriage

The First Time

& Dave: Oh, my God, I’m literally too embarrassing to even live.

& Aubrey: Okay. It’s not that so much as she doesn’t... She doesn’t really care about that shit, you know, the noise and the magazines. And she definitely doesn’t wanna hear how beautiful you think she is when she tucks her hair behind her ears. I mean, I doubt she really wants to hear anything. All she wants to feel is a little less freaked out than she already does, which, you know, is probably very. So she wants to be with a guy who seems less freaked out than she is, and if you can be that guy, then rad. But if you can’t... then you’re not gonna be her dude.
Dave: I’m never gonna be her dude, am I?
Aubrey: Not with that attitude, my friend, no.

& Aubrey: Your balls are vibrating.

& Aubrey: Everything cool has been ruined. Was before we got here. Even sex and relationships. It’s all just so safe and convenient. Homogenized. Exchange profiles, boil your personality down to some, like, compatibility equation. “What’s your favorite movie? Who’s your favorite recording artist?” And then with one easy click, we too can realize our dream of boning someone exactly like us. Get married, give birth to two and a half babies. We can all post the pictures on Facebook or Twitter. No, that’s... That is not for me. I wanna meet a man the old-fashioned way, you know, like in a bar.
Dave: How about a dark alley? Crazy guy who talks to himself?

& Aubrey: Listen. I’m not gonna lecture you on parenting. That’s not my thing. You stick to your area, and I will stick to mine. But let me just say this: We all knew at some point I was going to have a drink. It’s inevitable. I am a teenager, and this is America, and isn’t it way better that I do it here, alone in my room with a glass of wine, rather than at some party, doing Jager shots with some frat-boy date rapist? Or when I could be killed in, like, a fiery car accident?

& Dave: Do you know what “homogenized” means?
    Jane: What?
    Dave: Homogenized.
Jane: Uh... It’s a kind of milk, isn’t it? Homogenized milk.
    Dave: Yeah... Yeah.

& Aubrey: I dig you so much.

& Dave: I’m sorry it happened.
    Aubrey: Yeah. Me too.

& Dave: Here’s what I know about sex. You ready? You ready? Sex is so much better before you’ve had it. Because before you’ve had it, it’s everything. You know? It’s what you dream of. I mean, your entire world is, like, consumed in this... Well, you guys know what I’m talking about. And then after... After, it’s just... It’s just sex. It’s just... It’s not even that, you know? It’s just a mess. It’s a mess. I wish I could just go back to the beginning.

& Big Corporation: So now what? You hit one bump and you bail? Throw your hands up and walk away?
Dave: Well, I mean, it was a pretty major bump.
Big Corporation: No, it wasn’t. It was sex. One time. The first time. You don’t know anything from that. You’re gonna tell me you don’t think it’s worth giving it one more shot? You think it’s about letting it go. No. It’s about sticking with it and being a man. And I don’t mean in no bullshit way, like you’re tough or you’re a dick. Being a real man.
Dave: I don’t even know if I am.
Big Corporation: You are. You’re a man. Now act like it.

& Aubrey: I met a boy...

& Dad: I want you to remember every detail of what just happened, because it’s never going to happen again.

& Dave: I don’t know much about relationships. I definitely don’t know anything about love. All I want, like, in the world, is to just keep talking to you. I wanna know how your day was, where you wanna eat, and I wanna argue with you. And I wanna hear all your theories, even the ones that are just completely, you know, wrong. And I know it’s not that simple. I don’t know, I just think... No, I really believe that if you’d just be willing to continue having this conversation with me, then we can figure the rest out.

& Aubrey: You know, none of my theories are wrong, by the way. They just aren’t fully developed yet.

    Spartacus: Vulcanalia?
Varro: A festival to ward off wildfires.

& Spartacus: Crixus, then?
    Varro: Crixus certainly.
    Spartacus: And his opponent?
Kerza: Against the Champion of Capua? What would it matter?

& Lucretia: Darling, you must spend coins to receive coins. My husband taught me that.
    Batiatus: A wise man.

& Spartacus: Barca? He stands but tall.
Varro: He stands a legend. After Carthage suffered defeat by the romans, they forced hundreds of his people to fight against each other in the arena. Half a day passed, and only two remained... Barca. And the chief of his people, the noble Mago. Skill and the testament of years were his allies. Strength and youth Barca’s. Mago fell to his knees... And Barca became the Beast of Carthage.

& Varro: Mago was a warrior fierce renown. A chief upon a throne of blood. He was also Barca’s father, as the story tells...
    Spartacus: Is it true?
Varro: In the world of the gladiator, a man’s fame and glory constructs its own truth.
Spartacus: Fame and glory. I seek neither.

& Crixus: It’s no easy task to sever a man’s head. You must find the right angle.

& Naevia: I do not favor the games.
Crixus: Well that is an odd bent... for a slave... at a gladiator school.

& Doctore: Never lose focus! Not if Jupiter himself were to rip open the heavens and dangle his cock from the skies! A gladiator’s first distraction is his last. Not all contests end in death... Two fingers. A sign of surrender... And shame.

& Spartacus: The oath I swore to this place did not including begging. I need no lesson in submission.
Doctore: You favor a different lesson? In obedience, perhaps? To the hole!

& Spartacus: There are many I would see dead in this place. You are not among them though.
Varro: You may not have a choice.
Spartacus: There is always a choice.

& Batiatus: This was merely a taste! Tomorrow they will settle this grudge in the arena! Crixus, the undefeated! Spartacus, the dog who defies death! A fight for the ages! Glory to Capua! Glory to Rome!

& Spartacus: I believe his reputation inflated. Tomorrow I shall prove it so.
Kerza: Next he’ll boast he can defeat Theokoles himself.
Spartacus: Perhaps. If I knew the man.
Varro: Theokoles. The shadow of death.

& Batiatus: Spartacus fought well! Let him live to fight another day!

& Ilithyia: He lives? How disappointing.

& Spartacus: His reputation is well earned. My blade could find no weakness.
Doctore: And yet... it was there. At least ten points where you could have seized advantage. You needed more training.
Spartacus: I shall train harder then.
Doctore: No. It is too late for such things.

&  In cancer veritas.

& Kate: Why is the coffee so much better when you make it?
Charlie: Because I make it with love, and I also make it with bacon.

& Schoolgirl: Miss Hannah. Are you pregnant?

& Kate: Is that pot?
Millie: Of course not, do I look like a hippie? It’s crack.

& Kate: I’m Kate. I’m an alcoholic... I’m sorry, I don’t mean to laugh. Those words are weird. I mean, I guess I... Yeah. I don’t know if I’m an alcoholic, really. I drink a lot. And I’ve always drank a lot. Everyone I know drinks a lot. So I never really thought it was a problem. But lately, it kind of seems like it is, so... I wanna be able to have a beer without it turning into 20... or wetting the bed. It seems like every time I drink, something awful happens... and all the things that used to be funny... are not really funny anymore... and things have gone from embarrassing to scary, so... So, yeah, I’m kind of... I’m kind of scared.

& Rochelle: Oh, God, Assholes Anonymous.

& Charlie: I gotta say, this is most likely the most boring meal... in the history of our planet, so... That’s exciting.

& Jenny: I’m not just talking about alcoholics. People are fucking weird. We all have shit that we carry in our heads that doesn’t make any sense. At least alcoholics have the tools to work through it.
    Kate: Steps.
    Jenny: And talking... listening, crying.

& Charlie: I love you. I love you. I love you.
Kate: I love you, but you know what? Love is the easy part. Did you know that? It’s the rest of this shit that’s hard.

& Kate: I can’t be sober and be with you.

& Charlie: Last question. Can we just play one more game?

Live Free or Die

Breaking Bad 5×1

& Walter: Are you gonna... You gonna show some kind of... I don’t know... Some kind of mild relief that I’m alive?
Skyler: I am relieved, Walt. And scared.
    Walter: Scared? Scared of what?
    Skyler: You.

& Mike: .....
    Jesse: What?!
Mike: Keys, scumbag. It’s the universal symbol for keys.

& Mike: We’re boned. Well... You know how they say “it’s been a pleasure”?.. It hasn’t.

& Walter: So what do you think?
Old Joe: Expensive. Leaving aside engineering, rigging some kind of alternate power source, my primary sticking point is I actually need the thing, as you gentlemen can see, it’s paying the bills.
Walter: But I mean it’s feasible, doable?
Old Joe: Hey, we’re living in a time of, uh, string theories and God particles. Feasible, doable? Yeah, sure, why not? Expensive.

& Saul: Uh, the police... They may call. Let me... let me back up a little. Can I s... can I sit down? I’m going to sit down.
Skyler: Okay, w-w-why are the police going to call?
Saul: May call you. Distant, outside possibility. But on the off chance I want you thinking one thought... Hogan’s Heroes. Sergeant Schultz. Do you remember Sergeant Schultz? “I know nothing. I see nothing.” Do you remember how he... I want you like that.

& Old Joe: All right, watches off necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets...
    Walter: Gold. These are non-ferrous.
Old Joe: Better hope. What about that stuff you young guys wear on the end or your pricks? Speak now or forever sing soprano. What’s up with that, by the way? Why would anybody wanna put a metal ring through the end of the prick?..
Jesse: What are you looking at me for?!

& Jesse: Magnets! Oh!
Walter: How many batteries is this?
Old Joe: That there’s 21, wired in series, so 21 times 12, 252 volts.
Walter: Can you add 21 more, wired in parallel? Up the amperage?

& Mike: Well, you got all the answers, so you tell me, answer man, did all that even work just now?
    Walter: Yes. It worked.
Mike: I’m supposed to take that on faith? Yeah? Why? How do we know?
    Walter: Because I say so.

& Saul: You know... Take that thing and get the hell out of here. You and me, we’re done. ... Come on. Hey. Hey. H...
Walter: We’re done when I say we’re done.

& Walter: I forgive you.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Season 1 Episode 2

& Batiatus: Have him taken to the baths. But first attend to all that fucking hair.

& Barca: This is the one? The Spartacus everyone’s been pissing about?
    Spartacus: Spartacus? My name is...
Crixus: No one gives shit to who you were, thracian.
Barca: I give no shit to who he is!

& Spartacus: What is this place?
Barca: The afterlife, friend. Or least outside its rusted gates.

& Crixus: You’re now an honored guest of Batiatus, master of the greatest ludus in Capua.
    Spartacus: Ludus?
Crixus: A school of training. Where men are forged into gods, blood their ambrosia, the arena, their mountaintop.
    Spartacus: Gladiators...
    Crixus: The truest of brotherhoods!

& Spartacus: What are you, then?
Crixus: I’m a gaul, little man. The greatest of my kind. Crixus, the undefeated!

& Doctore: Spartacus!
Spartacus: That... is not... my name.
Doctore: Grrr! Your name, your life, is what we decide.

& Varro: Shit-fucking slaves and criminals, the lot of them.
    Spartacus: Are we the better?
Varro: You survived your own execution. Twice, if you mark the gaul over there not introducing your brains to the sand. You are of a difference, thracian. Above this unfortunate collection.
    Spartacus: And you?
Varro: Varro. The worst of the lot.

& Batiatus: These men are all the straw afforded. Bake them into brick, or crumble them to the mines.
    Oenomaus: Your will. My hands.

& Marcus: You fought the gladiators there. What do you think of our chances?
Spartacus: ..... You’re all going to die.

& Ilithyia: I thought I was in the presence of a proper roman woman...
Lucretia: Proper is a word forged by men who would seek to enslave us with it.

& Ilithyia: How do you live with the noise and the smell, surrounded by these animals?
Lucretia: Yes, they are wild and savage, aren’t they? Something out of a fever dream.
Ilithyia: Isn’t it a worry? I mean, what if they went insane all at once, clamoring for blood?!

& Batiatus: The gods haven’t pissed on me enough for one day?! Legatus fucking Glaber spurns me like a common slave, but no! Let’s add shit to the piss let’s pour it in his mouth!

& Batiatus: A man must accept his fate. Or be destroyed by it.

& Lucretia: That’s disappointing.
Batiatus: Not every venture ends in climax.
Lucretia: A fact known well to every woman.

& Batiatus: Spartacus! Cease. You have passed the test.
    Spartacus: ..... Dominus.

& Batiatus: Welcome to the brotherhood.

& Mavis: ’Dad, you said that when I turned 118, I could go out into the world like every other adult that gets to come and go from this hotel.’ - “But, Mavey Wavey, it’s not safe. Blah, blah-blah.”

& Dracula: I know you’re excited, but everyone has gone to great lengths to come see you on your birthday.
Mavis: I know. They always do. But aren’t I getting a little old for these parties? I love them, but I really want to see new things. Maybe meet somebody my age...

& Dracula: We thought you were still out...
Mavis: Oh, no. I don’t know why I ever wanted to leave. The humans are so boring.

& Mavis: Um, who is that?
Dracula: Who is what? Oh, that. That is nobody.

& Jonathan: Please don’t kill me. I’m so young. I have so many places I want to see. I’ve got tickets to six Dave Matthews Band concerts.

& Jonathan: Wait. Aren’t you going to suck my blood?
Dracula: Classic human paranoia. Human blood is so fatty, and you never know where it’s been.
Jonathan: So, Dracula doesn’t drink blood?
Dracula: No, I use a blood substitute. Either Near Blood or Blood Beaters. You can’t tell the difference.

& Jonathan: So, wow, you’re, like, the real Count Dracula. Like, “I’m Dracula. Blah, blah-blah.”
Dracula: I’ve never said that in my life. ’Blah, blah-blah.’ I don’t know where that comes from!

& Dracula: He needs time to plan. And if you’re keeping him company, then he’s not planning. He is company-keeping, and then the plan, it’s... it doesn’t get planned.

& Dracula: He’s your cousin, Johnnystein.
Frankenstein: I don’t have no cousin.
Dracula: No, no, you do. He’s your sixth cousin, three times removed. On your right arm’s side.
    Eunice: You have a cousin?
Dracula: Frank, if your arm could talk, he would tell you that the original owner of your arm had a brother. Who married a woman. Who was...
    Jonathan: For strangling a pig.
Frankenstein: I have pig-strangling blood in my arm? That’s kind of cool.

& Dracula: Do you even know what fun is? I invented fun!

& Dracula: Prepare to cry, Billy Backpack!

& Quasimodo: What is it with you and this human?
Dracula: He is not human. He’s a Stein!

The Doorway

Mad Men 6×1 & 2

& Don’s reading Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy: “Midway in our life’s journey, I went astray from the straight road and woke to find myself alone in a dark wood...”
Ω Seems like a motto to Season 6.

& Sandy: They rejected me.
Betty: Oh. Of course you’d lie about that... So you’ll try again next year. Tell everyone you wanted to finish high school.
Sandy: It’s incredible how fast some people come up with lies...

& Dr. Rosen: What’s that camera you guys are selling? Pentax?
    Don: Leica.
Dr. Rosen: And which model will change my life?
Don: Like everybody else, I only know them by the price.

& Roger: What are the events in life? It’s like you see a door. The first time you come to it you say, “Oh, what’s on the other side of the door?” Then you open a few doors. Then you say, “I think I want to go over that bridge this time. I’m tired of doors.” Finally you go through one of these things and you come out the other side and you realize that’s all there are... doors and windows and bridges and gates. And they all open the same way and they all close behind you.
Look, life is supposed to be a path and you go along and these things happen to you and they’re supposed to change you. Change your direction. But it turns out that’s not true. It turns out the experiences are nothing. They’re just some pennies you pick up off the floor, stick in your pocket, and you’re just going in a straight line to you-know-where.

& Psychotherapist: You sound afraid.
    Roger: More like irritated.
Psychotherapist: And what do you think is causing that?
Roger: Top of the list, New Year’s. It’s like an extra birthday. You’re supposed to blow out the candle and wish for something. I don’t even know what it is.

& Burt: How was your Christmas?
Peggy: Same as the last five... ruined by work.

& Koss Headphones: Look, you don’t know what to do. I’m telling you what do to.
Peggy: You are. You have solved the problem. But it needs more than a solution. It needs to be a great ad.

& Don: As much as I’d like to join all the ads making fun of the ubiquitous San Francisco hippie, let’s try to trade on the word “love” as something substantial.
    — I don’t think that’s possible in this context.
Don: So why are we contributing to the trivialization of the word? It doesn’t belong in the kitchen. “I love this.” “I love my oven.” “You know what I’d love? I’d love a hamburger.” We’re wearing it out. Let’s leave it where we want it.
We want that electric jolt to the body. We want Eros. It’s like a drug. It’s not domestic. What’s the difference between a husband knocking on a door and a sailor getting off a ship?.. About 10,000 volts.

& Peggy: This is Peggy Olson and I’m calling for Mr. Chaough. ... Yes, this is Peggy Olson. ... Let’s not exaggerate. I’ve only called twice. ... Look, Father... oh, I’m sorry, Pastor. I was raised Catholic. ... Well, because my mother is. ... My father is Lutheran. ... Irish and Norwegian. ... No, he passed away. ... He was cremated. ... Look, Pastor, I’m not saying that you didn’t give Mr. Chaough the message, I’m just saying that it bears some urgency. ... Yes, which is to say I don’t think it would bother him at all to know that I’m on the phone. ... Certainly. Do you have a pen?

& Don: What do you want?
Photographer: I want you to be yourself.
Ω Uh-oh. Tough request.

& Roger: I looked out at that crowd and all I saw was a bunch more women I’ve disappointed.
Mona: Roger Sterling, no matter what you do, everyone loves you. What you’re seeing is them worried about how you feel about them.

& Abe: You’re typing a lot. You got a new way to go?
Peggy: No, I’m doing this thing Don used to do. I’m writing a letter to a fictitious acquaintance telling her how great my new headphones are.
Ω Respect.

& Peggy: What have you got?
— We have three very different angles. If you dip the audio in the wide shot, Mark Antony is just, you know, mouthing the “lend me your ears” part. You hear the announcer say one of these things... One. “Are you ready for the sound for the ages?” Two. “Koss knows that good sound is timeless.” Or “Ladies and gentlemen, this is not your old-fashioned sound.”
    Peggy: What’s the next one?
    — The next one or the second one?
Peggy: You said you had three.
    — Those were three. Didn’t I read all of them?
Peggy: Those are three different versions of the same idea. If you can’t tell the difference between which part’s the idea and which part’s the execution of the idea, you’re of no use to me. I know what you’re doing. I’ve been you. You’re hoping this sparks my imagination and then you can say, “Wow, she’s a genius,” or say anything because you want to go home.
    — I think they’re very different from each other.
Peggy: Well, I’m sorry to point it out, but you’re walking over the same ground. When you bring me something like this, it looks like cowardice.

& Roger: Damn it, how many times do I have to say this? I don’t feel anything. I’m just acknowledging that life, unlike this analysis, will eventually end and somebody else will get the bill.

& Pete: Well, there’s no reason we can’t tilt the camera up 45 degrees and see the husk of our city dweller on the sand and an arm of the hotel and Diamond Head in the background.
Sheraton: So there would be a man in this photo and he most likely would be naked?
Don: Actually, my first thought is there is no man. Just his footprints.
Sheraton: What happened to him? I think, and I think people might think, that he died.
Don: Maybe he did and he went to heaven. Maybe that’s what this feels like.
    Sheraton: It’s a little morbid.
Don: Well, heaven’s a little morbid. How do you get to heaven? Something terrible has to happen.

& Don: A picture of a hotel, even yours, is easy to ignore. This, or some version of this, demands your attention.

& Don: Does that make you think of suicide?
Roger: Of course. That’s what’s so great about it... You know, we sold actual death for 25 years with Lucky Strike. You know how we did it? We ignored it.

Til Death Do Us Part

House of Lies 2×12

/* End of Season 2 */

& Jeannie: Doug, no one gives a fuck.
Doug: I give an “f,” okay?

& Clyde: I still say you’re an idiot. Jeannie?
    Jeannie: Confirmed.

& Jeannie: Hey, team dipshit! Listen.

& Marty: Buh-bye, Carlson. Buh-bye, Galweather Stearn.

& Jeannie: I’m just wondering, is it a bit big for us?
Marty: Well, honey, it’s not just gonna be us forever.
    Jeannie: Oh, honey.
Marty: I mean, we got to think about the little ones.
Jeannie: Are you saying what I think you’re saying?
    Marty: Doug... Clyde...
Jeannie: Oh, my God, those are the exact names... I picked out!

& Clyde: You know what?.. I absolutely admire him. I mean, in this horrible, cynical, dying world, Doug’s utter lack of irony and his complete and total devotion to Sarah, his unwillingness to let his fear of the future topple the love and desire he has to spend the rest of his life with someone that he truly cares about... someone that he truly loves... I mean, that is something that is completely foreign to me. And heroic.

& Jeannie: Can I talk to you for a sec?

& Doug: And, of course, Marty is amazing. You know, he’s Marty Kaan. He’s-he’s the man. He’s the-the... Kaan man.

& Doug: It’s exactly like we’re the fantastic four. God, think about it. Marty’s Reed Richards, of course, you know? I’m Johnny Storm. “Flame on.” That’s classic Doug. And Jeannie’s Sue Storm, so... They’re brother and sister, so nothing going on there. And-and, you know, Clyde is obviously the thing, Ben Grimm. And our superpowers all complement one another. So I guess that’s an argument for going with Marty... God, to break that up would be a tragedy. Mm. Right? There’s no fantastic three.

& Marty: You drunk?
Jeannie: No, I’m not drunk enough.
    Marty: Okay, so...?
Jeannie: Um, Marty, that night... That night, I said something to you. I was totally wasted and vulnerable and scared, but I meant it, meant... What I said, and I’m now done minimizing it and rationalizing and thinking instead of feeling... I love you. I... love you.

& Carlson: I am so gonna fuck you up! I am gonna fucking shit all over your life! I’m gonna make you a motherfucking asterisk on a pimple on the fucking ass of management consulting!

Les Misérables

& Jean Valjean:
    Look down, look down.
Don’t look them in the eye.
    You’re here until you die.
    No God above.
    And hell alone below.
    Look down, look down.
    Here for dust!
    Look down, look down.
    You’ll always be a slave.
    Look down, look down.
    You’re standing in your grave.

& Fantine:
There was a time: then it all went wrong.
I dreamed a dream in time gone by,
when hope was high and life worth living.
I dreamed that love would never die.
I dreamed that God would be forgiving.
Then I was young and unafraid.
And dreams were made and used and wasted.
There was no ransom to be paid,
no song unsung, no wine untasted.
But the tigers come at night.
With their voices soft as thunder.
As they tear your hope apart.
As they turn your dream to shame.

& Fantine:
I had a dream my life would be.
So different from this hell I’m living...
so different now from what it seemed!
Now... life... has killed... the dream...
    I dreamed.

& Javert:
Tell me quickly what’s the story.
Who saw what and why and where?
Let him give a full description,
    let him answer to Javert!

& Jean Valjean:
If I speak... I am condemned.
If I stay silent... I am damned!

& Gavroche:
There was a time we killed the king.
We tried to change the world too fast.
Now we have got another king,
he is no better than the last.
This is the land that fought for liberty...
now when we fight we fight for bread!
Here is the thing about equality...
    everyone’s equal when they’re dead.
Take your place! Take your chance!
Vive la France! Vive la France!

& Jean Valjean:
    There are words.
That are better unheard, better unsaid.

& Enjolras:
Raise the flag of freedom high!
Every man will be a king!
Every man will be a king!
There’s a new world for the winning!
There’s a new world to be won!

& Marius:
Had you seen her today you might know how it feels.
To be struck to the bone in a moment of breathless delight!
Had you been there today you might also have known.
How your world may be changed in just one burst of light.
And what was right seems wrong and what was wrong seems right!
Red! I feel my soul on fire!
Black! My world if she’s not there!
    Red! The color of desire!
    Black! The color of despair!

& Enjolras:
Red, the blood of angry men!
Black, the dark of ages past!
Red, a world about to dawn!
Black, the night that ends at last!

& Grenadier: Who’s there?
    Enjolras: French revolution!
    Grenadier: Fire!

& Fantine:
    Take my hand.
    I’ll lead you to salvation.
    Take my love.
    For love is everlasting...
    and remember.
The truth that once was spoken...
To love another person is to see the face... of God.

&
Do you hear the people sing.
Lost in the valley of the night?
It is the music of a people
who are climbing to the light.
For the wretched of the earth
there is a flame that never dies.
    Even the darkest night will
end and the sun will rise.
We will live again in freedom
in the garden of the Lord.
We will walk behind the ploughshare
we will put away the sword.
The chain will be broken and all
    men will have their reward!
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
    Somewhere beyond the barricade
is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing? Say,
do you hear the distant drums?
This is the future that we
    bring when tomorrow comes!

& Tomorrow comes!

Sandkings)

Dark Wings, Dark Words

Game of Thrones 3×2

& Jojen: You can’t kill it, you know.
    Bran: Why not?
Jojen: Because the raven is you.

& Jaime: Do you know how long it’s going to take us to get to King’s Landing walking through fields and forests?
    Brienne: Yes.
Jaime: So how shall we pass the time?
Brienne: By putting one foot in front of the other.
Jaime: It’s going to be a very dull walk.

& Jaime: You know, it doesn’t matter how loyal a servant you are, no one enjoys the company of a humorless mute. Trust me on this. People have been serving me since I was born.

& Jaime: I don’t blame him. And I don’t blame you, either. We don’t get to choose who we love.

& Jaime: What if he tells someone?
Brienne: We’re not doing it. He’s an innocent man.
Jaime: More innocent than Lady Stark’s daughters?..

& Theon: Where am I? Who are you? What do you want?
Bolton’s bastard: I want to do this.

& Sansa: He didn’t want anything. He just takes an interest because he loved my mother.
Shae: Men only want one thing from a pretty girl.
Sansa: Littlefinger’s not in love with me.
Shae: Love is not the thing he wants.
    Sansa: He’s too old!
Shae: They never see it that way.

& Lady Olenna: How could he possibly have any claim to that ugly iron chair? We should have stayed well out of all this if you ask me. But once the cow’s been milked, there’s no squirting the cream back up her udders. So here we are to see things through.

& Lady Olenna: I want you to tell me the truth about this royal boy, this Joffrey.
    Sansa: I... I...
Lady Olenna: You, you. Who else would know better?..
Sansa: Joff... King Joffrey, he... His Grace is very fair and handsome and as brave as a lion.
Lady Olenna: Yes, yes, all Lannisters are lions. And when a Tyrell farts, it smells like a rose.

& Sansa: He’s a monster!
Lady Olenna: Ah. That’s a pity.

& Karstark: May I speak my mind, Your Grace?
Robb: Have you not been speaking your mind, Lord Karstark?
Karstark: I think you lost this war... the day you married her.

& Talisa: May I help you, Lady Stark?
    Catelyn: No.
    Talisa: I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have...
Catelyn: You can’t help because a mother makes one for her children to protect them. Only a mother can make them.

& Mance Rayder: Do you know what it takes to unite 90 clans, half of whom want to massacre the other half for one insult or another?.. They speak seven different languages in my army. The Thenns hate the Hornfoots. The Hornfoots hate the ice-river clans. Everyone hates the cave people. So you know how I got moon worshippers and cannibals and giants to march together in the same army?
    Jon Snow: No.
Mance Rayder: I told them we were all going to die if we don’t get south... Because that’s the truth.

& Grenn: Get up, Sam.
    Sam: No.
    Grenn: Get up.
    Sam: I can’t.
Grenn: If you stop, you’ll die.
Edd: ’Course if you don’t stop, you’ll probably die, too.

& Osha: Not another step, boy. Unless you want to drown in your own blood.
    Jojen: I’m unarmed.
    Osha: That was poor planning.
Jojen: My sister carries the weapons.

& Tyrion: This is cruel and unfair. Cruelly unfair.

& Margaery: I would not speak ill of the dead, Your Grace.
Joffrey: You think one ought to speak kindly of a traitor merely because he’s had a sword put through his heart?
Margaery: No. I do beg your pardon. The subtleties of politics are often lost on me.

& Osha: Isn’t he ashamed, your brother, needing you to protect him?
Meera: Where’s the shame in that?
Osha: Any boy his age who needs his sister to protect him is gonna find himself needing lots of protecting.
Meera: Some people will always need help... That doesn’t mean they’re not worth helping.

& Bran: What else have you seen?
Jojen: Only one thing that matters... you.

& Jaime: Ooh. You move well... for a great beast of a woman.

& Jaime: Bit of a quandary for you... If you kill me, you fail Lady Stark. But if you don’t kill me... I’m going to kill you.
