The First Day of the Rest of Your Life

The Walking Dead 7×16

& Negan: Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life, Sasha.

& Negan: You are smart, hot as hell, dignified as shit, and you don’t suffer one goddamn fool.

& Negan: We are gonna help solve some shit.

& Negan: Tuck in. Big day.

& Negan: Punishment— can’t do anything without that. Punishment is how we built everything we have.

& Negan: Just one. I mean, I was gonna pull three outta the pool, but just one and just for you.

& Negan: You got me wrapped around your little finger. You know that? And it’s not a man/woman thing. I mean, if you had a dick, I would still have these feelings.

& Abraham: We kick shit and eat snakes. That’s us.

& Abraham: I hate the beach. End of the day in a wet suit? It’s like you’re sandblasting your nutsack every single step you take back to the car.

& Eugene: All points are covered. Every contingency is already met. I come armed with two barrels of the truth. A test is upon you, and I’m giving out the cheat sheet.

& Rick: Where’s Negan?
    Eugene: .... I’m Negan.

& Abraham: C’mon. Layin’ your ass on the line for someone else, tearin’ it to shreds for ’em— Oh, my, that is living.
    Sasha: You’re an idiot.
    Abraham: I never said otherwise.

& Negan: Damn, you are something else...

& Negan: Rick. This is just gonna make you sad. Broken. You’re gonna wish you were dead.

& King Ezekiel: End these Saviors and their accomplices! Alexandria will not fall, not on this day!

& Negan: A goddamn tiger!

& Negan: You taste that, Simon? That is the taste of shit!

& Rick: We are. We will.

& Negan: So... we are going to war!

& Maggie: The decision was made a long time ago, before any of us knew each other, when we were all strangers who would have just passed each other on the street before the world ended. And now we mean everything to each other. You were in trouble. You were trapped. Glenn didn’t know you, but he helped you. He put himself in danger for you. And that started it all — From Atlanta, to my daddy’s farm, to the prison, to here... to this moment now... not as strangers — as family... because Glenn chose to be there for you that day a long time ago. That was the decision that changed everything.

& Maggie: It started with both of you, and it just grew... to all of us... to sacrifice for each other... to suffer and stand, to grieve, to give, to love, to live... to fight for each other. Glenn made the decision, Rick.

& Broussard: I didn’t go private for a paycheck. Just couldn’t remember why I signed up anymore.

& Snyder: You know, a man can only play dumb so many times before everyone starts to believe it.

& Maddie: Do you believe in the Greatest Day?
Nolan: I mean, we have to. Otherwise, how could we live with ourselves?

& Broussard: That woman is a plague.

& Snyder: That’s exactly where you’re wrong. The moment you place a bet, you’re exposed.

& Maddie: The Greatest Day... all the promises they made. Is it real?

& Snyder: To Nolan... who shot for the moon and finally got it.

& Chief Counsel: We just received word from our Hosts. The Los Angeles bloc... has been scheduled for total rendition.

& Snyder: Something wrong?
Helena: No. Just the usual politics.

& Holmes: Despite what the motion picture industry would have us believe, it is not easy to pierce skin, ribs, and muscle in a single thrust.

& Det. Bell: Am I the only one keeping an eye out for the lost Ark of the Covenant?
Holmes: Nah, that’s in a warehouse in Yemen.
    Det. Bell: I was joking!
    Holmes: So was I.

& Holmes: Mmm... It’s vanilla with an almond finish. The odor is created by the breakdown of cellulose and lignin, two of the components of paper. It’s what gives old books their smell.

& Holmes: He, like everyone else in Colonial times, wrote with ink and quill. Captain Barker would have had to mix fresh ink every day. Therefore, one would expect each entry to be slightly different in shade and consistency...

& Capt. Gregson: Pirate treasure? In New York?

& Holmes: The truth must out.

& Shinwell: You the one taught me how to coax a confession out of a suspect. Hmm? Isolate. Surprise. Build a rapport.

The Last Man on Earth 3×13

& Phil: What’s going on, Care Bear?
Carol: Just a seismic shift in reality as we know it.

& Carol: What you’re about to see will shock and astound you to your very core. For the weak of stomach, feel free to use the hat as a barf bag.

& Carol: And now, prepare to question everything. Behold!

& Carol: Looks like we have company. And that company... is a Yoda.

& Phil: Find this thing we need to.
Carol: Tandy, I think you mean «Find this thing to which we need.»

& Phil: Think we’re making a mistake by putting all our eggs in this Yoda basket. I mean, could be some sort of gremlin or yeti or troll. Oh, wait. No, trolls don’t exist.

& Phil: As Lewis used to say... «That’s great.»

& Todd: God. Hon, what are you thinking about?
    Melissa: Santa’s penis.

& Phil: Found our Yoda, looks like we did.

& Gail: Todd, the results are in. That pill tested positive for Xanax.

& Phil: My nipples are like diamonds at this point!

& Phil: Looforwarto’t! That’s a shortening of the phrase «looking forward to it»! Just made that up. It’s gonna save me a lot of time in the future.

& Gail: Santa’s penis is clozapine.
    Todd: Santa’s penis is clozapine!

& Phil: It’s like that old saying, you know, «Sometimes you just have to give up on a kid...»

Patriots Day

& Commissioner Ed Davis: It’s the last hoop, Tommy. You walk your beat, smile, and you’re officially out of the doghouse. One more day. Weather’s gonna be nice, pretty girls, fresh air, be like a big picnic. Everybody loves a picnic...

& Patrick: There’s three things you can do on Patriots Day. One’s watch the marathon, the other one’s run the marathon, and the third one is get down to Fenway and yell for those Red Sox.
Jessica: Yellin’ for the Red Sox.
    Patrick: «Sahx.»
    Jessica: Sox.
    Patrick: Mmm. Red «Sahx.»

& Special Agent Richard DesLauriers: Gentlemen, the moment we label this terrorism, everything changes. It’s not about Boston anymore. It’s not a local investigation. It’s Wolf Blitzer. It’s stock markets. It’s politicians and knee-jerk reactions, anti-Muslim backlash... And what if we’re wrong? I mean, there’s no take-back. I’ve been through this before...

& Tommy Saunders: You know what? It took a lot of balls to escape like you did. Hey, you’re a very brave guy. Do you hear me?
Dun Meng: Go catch those motherfuckers!

& Sergeant John MacLellan: Welcome to Watertown, motherfuckers!

& Katherine Russell: For a Muslim woman, marriage is a lilting dance of duality...
strength and submission. Beautiful, selfless, rapturous love of two masters, the carnal and the divine. The life a Muslim woman lives is a dangerous and difficult one. If she does not submit to her husband, there is a spot reserved for her in Hell... Yes. My husband kissed me before he left, and he will kiss me again when I see him in Heaven. And you can’t prove anything. Inshalla.

& Tommy Saunders: That’s all I saw today. Good versus evil, love versus hate. The devil hits you like that, there’s only one weapon you have to fight back with... It’s love. That’s the only thing he can’t touch.
What are we gonna do? We hunt ’em down. Catch them, kill them, all that? Still gonna get us. No way it can ever be entirely preventable.
Wrap our arms around each other. Let love power us, feed us. I don’t think there’s any way that they could ever win.

& Wendy: Grand gestures aren’t necessary. When it comes to you, Bobby... it’s the small kindnesses I prefer.

Axelrod: Nobody leaves a negotiation happy. Five. And for that... you throw in the fucking Indian Four.

All About Eve

& Addison DeWitt: Eve. You all know all about Eve.

& Bill Simpson: The theater. The theater! What rules say the theater exists only within some ugly buildings crowded into one square mile of New York City? Or London, Paris or Vienna? Listen, Junior, and learn.
Do you wanna know what the theater is? A flea circus. Also opera. Also rodeos, carnivals, ballets, Indian tribal dances, Punch and Judy, a one-man band, all theater. Wherever there’s magic and make-believe and an audience, there’s theater. Donald Duck, Ibsen and The Lone Ranger. Sarah Bernhardt and Poodles Hanneford. Lunt and Fontanne, Betty Grable. Rex the Wild Horse, Eleonora Duse, all theater.
You don’t understand them all. You don’t like them all. Why should you? The theater’s for everybody, you included, but not exclusively. So, don’t approve or disapprove. It may not be your theater, but it’s theater for somebody, somewhere.
Eva: I just asked a simple question.
Bill Simpson: And I shot my mouth off. Nothing personal, Junior. No offense. It’s just that there’s so much bushwa in this ivory greenroom they call the theater, sometimes it gets up around my chin.

& Margo Channing: All the religions in the world rolled into one, and we’re gods and goddesses.

& Margo Channing: Isn’t it silly? Suddenly I’ve developed a big, protective feeling toward her. A lamb loose in our big, stone jungle.

& Margo Channing: You don’t like Eve, do you?
Birdie Coonan: You want an argument or an answer?
    Margo Channing: An answer.
    Birdie Coonan: No.
    Margo Channing: Why not?
Birdie Coonan: Now you want an argument.

& Margo Channing: Fasten your seat belts. It’s going to be a bumpy night.

& Margo Channing: Heartburn? It’s that Miss Caswell. I don’t see why she hasn’t given Addison heartburn.
Bill Sampson: No heart to burn!
Margo Channing: Everybody has a heart — except some people.

& Margo Channing: Lloyd, I’m not 20-ish. I’m not 30-ish. Three months ago I was 40 years old. 40! Four-0. That slipped out. I hadn’t quite made up my mind to admit it.

& Lloyd Richards: I shall never understand the process by which a body with a voice suddenly fancies itself as a mind. Just when does an actress decide they’re her words she’s saying and her thoughts she’s expressing?
Margo Channing: Usually at the point when she has to rewrite and rethink them to keep the audience from leaving the theater.
Lloyd Richards: There comes a time that a piano realizes that it has not written a concerto.
Margo Channing: And you, I take it, are the Paderewski who plays his concerto on me, the piano?

& Margo Channing: More than anything in this world, I love Bill. And I want Bill. And I want him to want me. But me, not Margo Channing. And if I can’t tell them apart, how can he?

& Margo Channing: Bill’s in love with Margo Channing. He’s fought with her, worked with her, loved her. But ten years from now Margo Channing will have ceased to exist. And what’s left will be... What?

& Margo Channing: It’s funny, a woman’s career. The things you drop on your way up the ladder so you can move faster. You forget you’ll need them again when you get back to being a woman. That’s one career all females have in common, whether we like it or not: being a woman. Sooner or later, we’ve got to work at it, no matter how many other careers we’ve had or wanted. And in the last analysis, nothing’s any good unless you can look up just before dinner or turn around in bed, and there he is. Without that, you’re not a woman. You’re something with a French provincial office or a book full of clippings, but you’re not a woman. Slow curtain, the end.

& Bill Simpson: Don’t cry. Just score it as an incomplete forward pass.

& Addison DeWitt: We all come into this world with our little egos equipped with individual horns. If we don’t blow them, who else will?

& Margo Channing: In this rat race, everybody’s guilty till proved innocent. One of the differences between the theater and civilization.

& Lloyd Richards: There are very few moments in life as good as this. Let’s remember it. To each of us and all of us, never have we been more close. May we never be farther apart.

& Margo Channing: Groom, may I have a wedding present?
Bill Simpson: What would you like? Texas?
Margo Channing: I want everybody to shut up about Eve. Just shut up about Eve. That’s all I want.

& Addison DeWitt: You’re an improbable person, Eve, and so am I. We have that in common. Also our contempt for humanity and inability to love and be loved, insatiable ambition, and talent. We deserve each other.

& Eve Harrington: Although I am going to Hollywood next week to make a film, do not think for a moment that I am leaving you. How could I?

& Addison DeWitt: And what’s your name?
    Phoebe: Phoebe.
    Addison DeWitt: Phoebe?
    Phoebe: I call myself Phoebe.
Addison DeWitt: And why not? Tell me, Phoebe, do you want someday to have an award like that of your own?
Phoebe: More than anything else in the world.
Addison DeWitt: Then you must ask Miss Harrington how to get one. Miss Harrington knows all about it.

Oasis

& Peter Leigh: «The Lord is my shepherd.
    I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in the green pastures.
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
    He restoreth my soul.
He leadeth me down the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the Shadow of Death,
I will fear no evil for Thou art with me.»

& Vivian: Costs 100 million to send someone to Oasis. Be a shame if you died in flight.

& Peter: Peter. Chaplain.
    Sy: Chaplain? Like religious?

& Severin: Uh, the reason I ask is because the air is breathable up here, but it is way too dry, so it really fucks up your nasal membrane. You may also suffer some visual impairment, due to the change in atmosphere and pressure on the optic nerve, so there’s some light sensitivity, hallucinations, and headaches.
Peter: This place has it all.
    Severin: Yeah. Sure does.

& Leigh: What’s that?
    Halloran: Turkey surprise.
    Leigh: What’s the surprise?
    B.G.: It ain’t turkey.

& Peter: I’ll be honest. I wear a collar sometimes. But I still have doubts. Big ones. If anyone tells you they don’t, they’re lying. Because life is mysterious, uh, death more so, and I don’t pretend to have all the answers.

& B.G.: Ecumenical? The fuck is that?
Peter: It means I’m a Christian, but I believe in the validity of all denominations. Excluding the Church of Satan. How ’bout you?
B.G.: Well, I guess I’m Ecumenical too. I believe in fives, tens, twenties, fifties. All denominations. And if they still make them cute little one-dollar bills, I believe in them motherfuckers too.

& B.G.: Leigh... Like Janet Leigh?
    Peter: The very same.
B.G.: I love me some Psycho. Hitchcock was the shit.

& B.G.: Why you think they sent his holy white ass up here?
    Alicia: Funerals.

& Danesh: It took millions of years for people to look up to the stars, and not feel terrified. The changing of the seasons, the waxing and waning of the moon, the circling of the constellations. All these regular patterns made people feel at home within the cosmos. Take the patterns away. Sleep under unfamiliar stars far from home... and people with a fragile mind... can feel those cosmic terrors return with a vengeance.

& Halloran: Saddest thing I ever saw. Worst thing I ever did.

& Keller: You ask a lot of questions, Reverend. Are you any good at answering them?

& ’Good morning. Rise and shine.’

Cascade

The Expanse 2×10

& Naomi: It was the right move. I’m going to keep telling myself that...

& Chrisjen: ...And after Eros, my definition of crazy has contracted significantly.

& Chrisjen: «Peace as a distraction.» God, I wish I could disagree with you right now.

’The amnesty has been extended indefinitely. Take advantage of basic income, group housing, medical services. Register today for a better tomorrow.’

& Nico: You’re Martian, aren’t you? ... It’s the way you’re walking. Like the sky might fall in on you. Like the ground’s gonna bite you.

& Nico: Here’s what you do. Feet planted in line with your shoulders. Back straight. Head down, staring at your toes. Then... Raise your chin, slowly... Millimeter at a time... Till your eyes are locked on the horizon. In a couple of weeks, your brain will forge the pathways. Your inner ear will get the memo. Then you’ll be no different than an Earther.

Money Monster

& Patty Fenn: See, I’m directing a show back here, which means you’re hosting one up there. So start hosting.

& Captain Powell: I’m sorry. Are you proposing we shoot the star of a TV show live, on air, in front of millions of people?

& Diane Lester: I understand you want specifics...
Patty Fenn: Yeah. So why doesn’t she give him some specifics?
Diane Lester: We know this was a completely isolated incident. It’s what we call a black swan. It’s impossible to predict, but it’s impossible to replicate.

& Lee Gates: I’m talking to every one of you. Every single person that’s watching me right now. I want you to dig as deep as you can and I want you to ask yourself, what is a life worth to you? What’s my life worth?

& Won Joon: They’re only calling it a glitch because nobody understands how the algo works. And if nobody can understand the math, then nobody has to explain the money.

& Captain Powell: So we got an 80% chance of an 80% chance. Yeah, that’s some shit math.

& Ron Sprecher: But how exactly am I supposed to get this to him?
Patty Fenn: I don’t know, Ron. You’re a producer. Produce your way up there!

Queen B.

Arrested Development 4×10

& Narrator: It was one of the so-called country club prisons... that had become popular after the Enron debacle.

& Receptionist: Also, if you’re sexually assaulted by a guard...
Lucille: A $20 gratuity is appreciated?
Receptionist: No, but press seven on your phone. If you go through the front desk, it’ll take forever.

& Mrs. Oh: You play mahjong before?
Lucille: Our beach club used to have a Jewish Day.

& Lucille: There’s always a way to get what you want...

& Lucille: Who better than the Chinese to help us build a wall, right?
George Sr.: So the Chinese will own a piece of the wall between U.S. and Mexico?
Lucille: They’ll own all of it, but they’ll make us very rich in the process.

& Lucille: She said you’re fat. That’s what you said, right? Or does that mean something different in Chinese?
    Noh: No, it means «fat.»

& Tobias: Perhaps that’s why they call this place Au-stare-ity.... No? Au-stare-i...

& Lucille: George Maharis. George— that’s your brother’s name. George Oscar Bluth.
Michael: Yes, uh, George is Gob’s first name, yep.

& Gene Parmesan: I rely on these babies right here— the old binocs. Let’s see if we can’t find this target... You know, the great thing about these is, there’s no software to update...

& Lucille: Hello, Oscar. You should get an Oscar for your portrayal of George in «Screw the Oblivious Sister-in-law.»

More, or Less

Feud 1×4

& Bette Davis: «Mother of three, 30 years experience in motion pictures, wants steady employment in Hollywood. References upon request.»

& Robert Aldrich: You know who goes to the movies nowadays? Kids and teenagers. I mean, nobody under the age of 35 even knows who these women are.

& Pauline: It’s called The Black Slipper. It’s written just for Joan...

& Pauline: You think I’m crazy?
Mamacita: I think this is a marvelous idea.
    Pauline: You do?
Mamacita: This is America. No one can tell you you’re crazy. In Werdohl, you know how you must live when you are born. Born to a shoemaker, you must make shoes. Born a girl, you must be a mother. Here, you decide. There is opportunity to become anything you want. I will make your case with Miss Joan.

& Joan Crawford: Win, lose or draw, I’ll always show up on time, hit my mark and promote the product, whether it’s Pepsi-Cola or a new motion picture.

& Joan Crawford: Jackals. It’s just like 1937 all over again.
    Mamacita: When Hitler took Austria.
Joan Crawford: No, when they labeled me box office poison.

& Joan Crawford: Who is Pauline?

& Joan Crawford: A woman director. Well, it really is over.

& Joan Crawford: Well, it’s time to face the music, Mamacita.

& Hedda Hopper: She has the critics, so what? You have the audience.

& Hedda Hopper: She’ll get a nomination, but so will you... They wouldn’t dare nominate her and not you. Yes, all right, she plays a lunatic, but you play a cripple!

& Jack Warner: Baby Jane is the number one picture in America.
Robert Aldrich: Well, actually, it’s more like number eight so far this year...
Jack Warner: No. For what we spent on it, it’s number one.

& Robert Aldrich: It was one movie. Which nearly killed me being locked up with those two dames. I want to do something a lot less dangerous, you know? Like a, uh, like a war picture or a Western.
Jack Warner: No. Let’s leave the war pictures and the Westerns to John Ford, okay?

& Jack Warner: You know, you’re the wop working in the fucking tile factory. We need tiles!
Robert Aldrich: Yeah, well, even the schmuck in the tile factory has dreams, Jack.
Jack Warner: Dreams are delusions. And right now, you’re delusional.

& Pauline: I know that it’s unorthodox, the idea of a woman director, but it’s not unprecedented. Think of the women who ruled the silent era...
Joan Crawford: Where are they now?

& Joan Crawford: What do you guess prevented the next great wave of women directors?
    Pauline: I don’t know.
Joan Crawford: Well, I do. I was there. Money. Money came along. Silents were low-cost, low-risk. A producer might shrug at the idea of an ingénue or girl editor taking a turn behind the camera, but when the studios came to power, they moved women to the feminine work. Costumes, continuity... Directors needed stamina, leadership, fiscal responsibility, so men were given the bullhorn. And I can’t say that we are any worse off for it.

& Joan Crawford: I’m not turning you down because you’re a woman. I’m turning you down because you’re a nobody. And at this late stage of my career, I don’t have the luxury of putting myself in the hands of a nobody. I have very few chances left. And my last chance is not going to be your first.

& Olivia de Havilland: I think the biggest moneymaker that year was Lawrence of Arabia.
Joan Blondell: I don’t think there was even a girl camel in that one.
Olivia de Havilland: So with two women stars of our era to suddenly have the most successful picture in the theaters among young people, well, we thought it signaled a sea change.
Joan Blondell: We had thought we’d all start working again. That there’d be a flood of women’s pictures.
Olivia de Havilland: It didn’t turn out that way.
Joan Blondell: Sure as hell didn’t. The studios thought it was a fluke. They always think it’s a fluke when a picture carried by the girls succeeds at the box office.
Olivia de Havilland: And they so often do.

& Joan Blondell: Oh, I’m not saying it, honey. Joan herself said it. Quote, «The twin curses of being a star are alcoholism and loneliness.» End quote.

& Joan Blondell: Oh, it’s a constant high. And then, when you don’t have a job, a success, or someone else is riding high... it gets very, very quiet. You can hear the voices of doubt. Pick up a bottle, and suddenly the party starts all over again. Pain goes away...

& Bette Davis: ...And I’m still not getting any offers.
Robert Aldrich: What are you talking about? You’re doing Perry Mason.
    Bette Davis: It’s television!
Robert Aldrich: There’s no shame in doing television!
Bette Davis: Says the man who just signed Sinatra and Dean Martin to a multi-million-dollar Western romp.

& Bette Davis: If the offers aren’t coming in now...
Robert Aldrich: Yeah, but they will come in. And if they don’t, I promise you, I will personally write you another big fat fucking hit.
Bette Davis: Yeah. That’s what Mankiewicz said, too, right after I lost for All About Eve. I’m still waiting.

& Robert Aldrich: Zack Thomas is intent on recouping his $100,000 from Joe Jarrett. That is the picture. Now, if every time we see Zack, he’s getting a foot rub, how’s the audience gonna understand his ambition?
Frank Sinatra: People know what I want, and they know I don’t sweat getting it. Match me.

& Assistant: «You don’t leave me much choice.»
Frank Sinatra: I know the line, you stupid bitch!
Robert Aldrich: All right, all right, that’s out of bounds.
Frank Sinatra: Out of bounds?! Who the fuck do you think you are, out of bounds?! You’re nobody. I ought to have you decapitated and buried in the fucking desert, you sweaty, four-eyed ape. They won’t even mark your grave with an «X.» And no one’ll notice you’re gone!

& Robert Aldrich: What’s this?
Jack Warner: That’s a gift for my good friend Bob. Fresh, un-mutilated properties. Further tales of old hags.
    Robert Aldrich: No, no, no—
Jack Warner: Now, listen. Pick one, bring it to Bette. As a bonus... I will release your dog-shit Sinatra Western. Who else would do that for you?

& Jack Warner: All right, come on. Run along, now. I got writing to do. I’m working on my autobiography. What do you think I should call it? I’m thinking of Life of a Showman.

& Jack Warner: Oh, also, good luck on Monday. I mean, in general, for Baby Jane. It’s sure to pick up a few nods, but I want you to be prepared for the possibility that you’ll be left out. But don’t take it personally. You’re just not the type that your peer group acknowledges.

& Robert Aldrich: Can I ask you something, Jack?
    Jack Warner: Yes, of course.
Robert Aldrich: Be straight with me.
Jack Warner: Never any other way, Bob.
Robert Aldrich: Do you think I have the potential for greatness?

& Robert Aldrich: I’m not a miracle worker. No one is gonna let a woman direct a picture. You’re in fantasyland.

& Mamacita: .... Census projections. By 1970, there will be six million more women than men. 52% of total population. Do you know what this means?
Pauline: A lot of lonely gals.
Mamacita: Studios will have obligations to make half of stories about women, by women, for women. It only makes economic sense. Keep your head up.

& Mamacita: Miss Joan. I want you to sit down.
