Mrs Biggs 1×5

& Ronnie: ’My darling wife, my poor sweet love. All the bitterness and anger in the world won’t bring our little Nick back to us. He was a happy chap and he gave us many happy memories. Let us use them. I don’t want to mourn any more because that belongs to the dead. I want to feel joy in my heart whenever my thoughts turn to the little boy we called Handsome Harry, Nickpops and even Sherbie Dab. I don’t believe he has gone anywhere. I know he is part of me and he’s with me with his trains and his Lego and shining morning face. Wherever I go, I’ll always have him with me.’

& Constantine: Hi, I’m Constantine. My friends call me Conti.
Ronnie: I’m... Ooh, what am I today? Oh, yes. Roy Keynes. How do you do?

& Charmian: Sir, I can’t promise I will graduate. But I can promise I will give you my absolute all... I recently lost my son. He was only ten but already he was showing great promise. And it was my dearest wish that he should go to university to study for the degree that I missed out on. Now that we’ve been granted leave to stay in Australia, I would like to do this for him.

& Ronnie: Where it all began... Well, I suppose you could say it all began with a girl on a train.

& Ronnie: No more hiding, Charm. We can live as husband and wife again.
Charmian: ... But what? What’s the catch?

& Ronnie: It isn’t a competition. She’s just helping us out.
Charmian: It seems to me she’s got designs on becoming the new Mrs Biggs.
Ronnie: Anyway, it’s not the perfect, but the imperfect, who have need of love.
Charmian: Don’t you dare quote Oscar Wilde to me.

& Ronnie: Look, Charm, just give it another couple of months, yeah? Then we can all move in together. Raimunda and the baby and you and the boys. What do you think?

& Ronnie: I can’t, love. I need to be free.
Charmian: Oh, Ron. You’re confusing being free with not being in prison. You really think this is what it’s like to be free?..

& Mr Powell: Told you he was no good.

& Charmian: The future’s full of possibilities. The past will only drag us down.

& Charmian: After all, what am I here? I’m just Mrs Biggs... the train robber’s wife.

& Sheree: What is it you said you did for a living?
Ronnie: Well, I could bullshit you, but the truth is... I’m a carpenter.
    Sheree: Really?
Ronnie: Nothing wrong with carpenters. I think you’ll find Jesus’s old man was one.

& Charmian: We’ve got to move.

& Nicky: Why are they calling Dad by his real name? Will he get arrested?

& Charmian: Well, then, go without us. ... As long as you’re free, we still have some hope we can be together again one day. That’s worth fighting for.

& Charmian: You don’t work the night-shift on minimum wage if you have hidden resources. In the end, we had no money. That’s the laugh of the whole thing.

& Charmian: I thought it was just sex and it wouldn’t matter, but... I’ve been punished. I’m pregnant... I’m going to have to get rid of it. Unfortunately, that’s against the law.

& — One little sting, dear, and you can be on your way.

& Ronnie: Christ! No, love. No kissing yet. I’m in too much bloody pain. It hurts so much I almost topped myself. A good job I’m a coward.

& Ronnie: So, what do you think? They call it plastic surgery, God knows why. Do I look any different?
Charmian: Honestly? You look like Fu Manchu. With a dead rat under your nose!

& Ronnie: Actually, Nickpops, your surname is King now. So is Twizzy’s.
    Charmian: What?
Ronnie: We have to cut all links with the UK. Someone might possibly trace Furminger out here, so we have to break the line. As soon as we leave here, we’ll be Terry and Sharon King and their two little King boys. A family of ten-pound poms.

& Ronnie: See? I told you. The future’s... full...
    Charmian: Of possibilities.

& Charmian: Every time we think it’s behind us...

& Charmian: It stinks.
Ronnie: £147,000, Charm. At last I can afford to be an honest man.

& Ron: Tsk, tsk, tsk, tsk, tsk, tsk! Cor! Cor blimey!
Woman on Train: What is the matter with you?!
Ronnie: Sexual depravity, loose morals, fornication. The country’s going to the dogs.

& Ronnie: Any good?
Charmian: Not really. It’s a bit pretentious.
Ronnie: Well, that’s the French for you. Wouldn’t catch me reading a French book.
Charmian: Just as well, now you’re a Jehovah’s Witness.

& Bob: You’re a bloody shower, Biggsy. Why do you lug everythin’ round in that briefcase?
Ronnie: Never show your hand, not unless you have to.
    Henry: What is hand show?
Ronnie: Well, say if I was to bump into a bird, Henry, when I’m on my way to work or something. Now, I don’t want her knowing that I’m a tradesman, do I?
    Michael: This is logic.

& Henry: How many birds do you want? You’ve always got half a dozen on the go as it is.
Ronnie: Half a dozen and one. That’s how many I want.

& Ronnie: What about me?
Charmian: ... You’re not the type of fella my dad would like me to meet, I know that. Ronnie: That’s not necessarily a bad thing, by the way.

& Charmian: He works for a living. He’s a carpenter.
Mr Powell: A carpenter? A common labourer!

& Charmian: But I love him!
Mrs Powell: Don’t speak like that in front of your father.

& Gordon: Where are you going?
Charmian: Away from this place, from everything. That’s what I want, Gordon. To be free.

& Charmian: What’s going to happen when they find out it’s missing?
Ronnie: You can’t worry about that. You’ve gotta look forward. The future’s full of possibilities; the past will only drag you down.

& Ronnie: Bloody hell, we’re rolling in it! That’s er... two hundred and twenty-eight pounds, ten shillings. ’Ere, that should keep us going for a bit.

& Mrs Greaves: How long will you be staying, Dr Marsh?
Ronnie: Ohh, a couple of weeks at least.
Mrs Greaves: .... Well, that’ll be two pounds, 12 shillings deposit, please.

& Warder: Name and number?
    Charmian: Prisoner 391, Powell, ma’am.
Warder: Get undressed... Knickers, too... Come on, your fanny’s not your own in here, girlie.

& Ronnie: Will you wait for me?
    Charmian: Forever.

& Peter: You can only do your best. Anything else you got to leave to divine intervention.

& Ronnie: What would you be prepared to do, Peter, to get the money you needed to dig yourself out of a hole?
Peter: Depends how much money I needed and what I had to do to get it.
Ronnie: What about... if it was 40 grand on offer?
Peter: .... I’d be prepared to do quite a lot for that.
Ronnie: Even if it was wrong, this thing you had to do?
Peter: I’ve worked all my life, Ron, paid all my taxes, brought my kids up, buried my Mum and Dad, and what did I get at the end of it? A gold watch and 15 bob a week pension... If I had the chance to get my hands on that sort of dough, I’d think about it very hard, mate. Very hard indeed.
