Luther: The Fallen Sun (2023)

DCI John Luther: This isn't a case of wrong place at the wrong time, is it?

Corinne Aldrich: My son is out there somewhere right now. So you need to find him.
DCI John Luther: I'll do the very best I can.
Corinne Aldrich: It's not good enough. I need you to promise me. I need you to promise me you'll find Callum.
DCI John Luther: ... Okay. I promise. I'll bring your boy home. Okay?

David Robey: From what I hear, DCI Luther's a bit of a bad apple. Trouble is, he's a very analog bad apple. Doesn't have what you might call an online presence, which is why I'm calling you. I want everything on him. Every furtive little secret, every intimate disgrace. I want his corruption. I want evidence of any misstep. Any wrongdoing. Any line he's crossed. I want… his shame.

Corinne Aldrich: Liar.

John Luther: I'm still a copper.

Warden: Let them at you?
John Luther: Yeah.
Warden: How does that make sense?
John Luther: Because I'm ready. Can you do it or not?
Warden: I mean, in theory, yeah, but… If it goes wrong, spins out of control, you're a dead man. They'll kill you, John.
John Luther: All right, yeah. I… I can live with that. So let 'em come. Let them come.

DCI Odette Raine: So… Martin… I'm not asking you to catch him for me. We can do that. I'm asking you to save his life.

John Luther: No? Okay, right, well, this is the part where I do something horrible to you like perhaps, I don't know, tattoo your fucking eyeball.

Martin Schenk: Schenk.
John Luther: Wotcha.
Martin Schenk: I was wondering when you'd call.
John Luther: Yeah. I see you're back in the shop then.
Martin Schenk: I'm consulting, yes. Helping them to catch you.

John Luther: Hey, do you want to put 20 on it?
Martin Schenk: On what?
John Luther: Twenty that I get him before you get me.
Martin Schenk: Make it 50.

John Luther: It doesn't matter who you are. We've all got something that you don't want anyone else to know about. Something you're ashamed of. It could be something sexual. Could be financial. Could be criminal... Problem is these days people live their secret lives out on the internet.

John Luther: I think he's probably figured out that in the right circumstances, the fear of shame, the fear of being called out, the fear of being caught is way more powerful than the fear of death.

David Robey: Would you like your daughter back?

Barman: Evening, sir. What can I get you?
John Luther: Oh, I don't know. It's been a long day. What do you suggest?
Barman: I'd say a long day calls for a martini...
John Luther: No.
Barman: Whiskey? We have an 18-year-old Glenmorangie, uh, Tullamore Dew--
John Luther: I'll have a glass of water. If it makes you happy, you can make it fizzy.

John Luther: Boss, I'm sorry, okay? I know that I've let you down… way too often.
Martin Schenk: It wasn't me you let down. The tragedy is that you are a better man than you ever allowed yourself to be.

DCI Odette Raine: I don't understand why you did the things you did.
John Luther: Well, I couldn't see any other way.
DCI Odette Raine: To do what?
John Luther: What had to be done.

David Robey: So, John. I thought I'd kick off by asking you as a… Well, a bit of an expert in these things, apparently. Do you think I can help being what I am? Do you think any of us can?
John Luther: Mate, I couldn't give a fucking monkey's.

Martin Schenk: Wotcha.
John Luther: Wotcha.

Martin Schenk: I don't think you're going back to prison. A job offer, perhaps?...
John Luther: So now what?
Driver: Chief would like a word...

Luther 5×4

Luther: All this eye for an eye bullshit, it's all just a game, isn't it, George?

Luther: Eye for an eye...

Cornelius: Peace In Our Time. I'm Adolf, he's Neville, you're the Sudetenland.

Cornelius: Here we are. You, smoking gun, damning evidence and whatnot. All in the cloud. Whatever that actually is.

Luther: You're a clever one, ain't you, George? You would have been a good copper.
Cornelius: No. Too honest to have been a copper.

Alice: You're the only person I ever knew who always told me the truth. Come what may... You never lie to me.

Vivien: You really are a bourgeois little prince, aren't you? Thought police. Sex police. Erecting an edifice of speculation, a foundation for puritanical distaste.
Luther: No, that's not what I'm doing. I'm basically trying to establish whether you would lie to protect your privacy, and the answer turns out to be "yes", which I find very interesting.

Alice: Some valedictory advice... Don't let John Luther back through your door. Not under any circumstance or for any reason. He's not what you think he is.

Luther: I had a boss, once. Her name was Rose Teller. Really good cop. She used to say, erm, an assumption is something you don't know you're making.

Halliday: How are we supposed to find him? There are like, 60,000 streets in London...

Luther: We've got no evidence. If we call it in, we'll have to go through due process. Get a warrant. It would go on and on and on and what does that mean for anyone that's alive in there now?

Luther: If you found out tomorrow that if we went in there today you could have saved someone's life, would you be okay with that?
Halliday: Boss, that's not fair.
Luther: All right, do what you have to do.

Luther: That is not what happened.

Alice: The thing is, John, you don't understand love. You can mimic it, you can recognise it in others, but you can never understand it.

Luther 5×3

Vivien: Because the balance of risk has shifted.

Alice: So I take it I'm being arrested. Because you do remember how many crimes we've committed together?..

Luther: Alice, I don't care who gets hurt. All right? Knock yourself out, break legs, but no one dies.
Alice: I really don't see why it matters.
Luther: I know you don't, but it still does.

Mark: So the last I heard you were...
Alice: Well, quite, but apparently only the good die young.
Mark: Well, then, congratulations. You can expect to live forever.

Benny: You know, I always thought she'd be the end of you. I didn't think she'd be the end of us all.
Luther: Yeah, well, Benny... It's going to get worse. A lot worse.

Luther: I take you down. I take you, your family, everything. Brick by brick. You'll be the king of a smoking hill, mate.

Alice: I'm not apologising for what's happened, I'm regretting what's to come.

Palmer: I'm not here to listen. This isn't a dialogue. And now your friend is dead.

Benny: Boss, I need you to kill this prick for me... White. 6'1". Dark hair. Brown eyes. Muscular build...

Luther 5×2

Alice: I didn't come looking for joy unconfined, just a... place to hide. Maybe a cup of tea and a chocolate digestive. Please.

Luther: George and I had a little chat.
Alice: Oh.
Luther: I say "chat". He beat the crap out of me.

Luther: Is she married?
Halliday: Eighteen years.
Luther: Happily?
Halliday: Apparently. Why?
Luther: Well, the happier the marriage, the easier it is to weaponise.
Halliday: And the Cynic of the Year Award goes to...
Luther: No, I'm not a cynic. That's basically my problem.

Alice: I had to be dead. That's how all your best relationships end.

Dr. Vivien Lake: Play safe.

Alice: Did you know the observable universe got bigger?
Luther: No, I missed that.
Alice: Well, it's true. Last time I saw you, we assumed there were about 200 billion galaxies. The revised estimate puts it at two trillion, so, what we believed to be absolutely everything was basically just a rounding error. Closer to zero... than the true number.

Alice: He has to punish us and be seen to punish us.
Luther: "We" are not "us".
Alice: Well, ask him that. He thinks we're up a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G.

Alice: ...Or option two, we kill him and run.

Luther: Some of these people would still be alive if I was there...

Luther: Alice, we're done. You can go.

Cornelius: No messing. No amusing chit-chat. No prevari-fucking-cation. You get this done.

Schenk: Look, John. This er, Direct Entry thing, head-hunting people from the public sector. Fast-tracking them through the ranks. None of us like it. But it's the way it is. Give it ten minutes and DS Halliday will be Superintendent Halliday...
Luther: Boss, are you, um, telling me to behave myself?
Schenk: I'm saying that, we're the dinosaurs and she's the meteor. So, yes. Don't show her how it's done. Show her how it's supposed to be done.

Halliday: Single and ready to mingle.
Luther: What does that mean?
Halliday: Oh. He used a number of online hook-up sites.

Luther: All right, well, you know, this isn't our boy's first disco. I mean, even Jack the Ripper had to work up towards what he did to Mary Jane Kelly. And our boy hasn't got to this place from a standing start. Nope.

Halliday: That's LEDs sewn into his hood. It confuses CCTV.
Luther: Ah, OK, so this isn't random, is it? Which means... there's gonna be more...

Dr. Vivien Lake: There isn't a person in the world without a sexual secret, DS... Yeah, we all have a fantasy. We all have a fetish. We all regret something we've done. Or something we never had the courage to do.

Alice: Wotcher.

Luther 4×2

& Luther: And did she say anything else?
Megan: Not really. There was one thing... Something I don’t really understand, I’m sorry.
    Luther: Something like what?
    Megan: «Meep meep.»

& Luther: How much of the brain did he eat?

& Luther: This wasn’t murder, this was theft... I think he’s this clever, little lonely man, slowly falling apart, spending his days watching the lives of others. And you know what that’s like... other people’s lives seem so much better than ours. More interesting, more attractive, more alive.

& Cornelius: You are obviously a decent chap. But you did what you did in front of my son. If I start showing weakness to him... well, it’s nature’s way, isn’t it? The Lion King. Hakuna Matata.
Luther: Er, I think you’re thinking about the wrong song.
Cornelius: What one am I thinking of, then? Oh, «Hakuna Matata», that’s the happy one, right? «No more worries.»
Luther: That one. That’s the one.
Cornelius: Then, I’m definitely thinking of the wrong song.

& Emma: «Cut the chatter, Red 2. Accelerate to attack speed.»
    Luther: What? What was that?
Emma: Sorry. Erm... Theo and me... DCI Bloom... He quite liked the odd Star Wars reference. «Not this ship, sister.»
Luther: ..... Do you know any David Bowie? ..... We Are The Dead.

& Megan: She’s standing behind you.
    Luther: Who?
Megan: Her mouth is moving, but I can’t hear her words. I can make out what she’s saying, though.
Luther: Yeah? What is she saying?
Megan: Tell John, «Hell is real.»

& Luther: So, because you can’t believe it’s true, logically it’s false. Is that really an argument now? Ey?

& Luther: You ever hear of the... confirmation bias?.. We all do it. You sort of see things in a way that support what you already believe. So, you, erm... we form an opinion and then you create a theory and then you work hard to prove it.

& Luther: Megan, that is just your guilt talking, OK. The dead are gone.
Megan: No. The dead aren’t even dead, John.

& Luther: What is your knowledge of crime to journey stats?
Emma: Er, stats say that the less familiar an offender is with a given area, the closer to home he’ll commit his crimes. Which puts Steven within a mile and a half of us.

& Luther: So, what do we do?
Emma: Well, we should call in armed response.
Luther: Yeah. We... we should do that.
Emma: Except last time we did that he got away...
Luther: So, what do we do?
    Emma: We do it right.
    Luther: Good answer.

& Steven: I died.
Luther: No, no. The dead don’t come back, OK? Now, we think they do, but they don’t.

& Luther: It was a good shooting.

& Luther: Nice hat.
    Cornelius: Nice coat. Very sensible.

& Cornelius: Are we being serious, now? You do know what this lot is worth?
Luther: Yeah. Enough to start a new life. But that’s not going to happen now, is it?
Ω So John is back and on the track.

& Megan: Alice Morgan... was your blind spot. You didn’t love her, not really. She frightened you and she excited you... and you mistook that for love. But you would have killed her, eventually. If she didn’t kill you first... Perhaps that’s why I did it... But I didn’t.
Ω Definitely, Alice is a Megan.

& Luther: Megan... are you scared of me?
    Megan: Clearly not.
Luther: Well, you should be. Because I’m coming for you.

& Bloom: I’m afraid she’s dead, John.
    Luther: No, she’s not.

& Bloom: Are you ok? Really?
Luther: Yeah. Everything’s tickety boo. Totally disco.

& Cornelius: Sorry, mate. Who are you, again?
    Luther: Police.
    Cornelius: Which police?
    Luther: The police.

& Emma: I just want to say... whatever it takes... you know?.. I’m in.
    Luther: Anything?
    Emma: Anything.

& Luther: There are some things that you might have heard about me that quite possibly could be true.

& Luther: There’s something I need you to hear from me... Never cut corners. Never. Not even if you know no-one else will know, no-one else will find out... that it is exactly the right thing to do... because it never, ever is. Ever.

& Emma: Whoever’s been watching him knows every sentence he’s composed, every website he’s visited. He knows his thoughts.
Schenk: It used to be that we could never know the truth about each other. Not really.

& Stark: So what is it... with John Luther and the people he loves?

& Schenk: John, I don’t know what to say. I don’t have the words.
Ω So do we.

& Gray: John Luther, you’re under arrest for the murder of Detective Sergeant Justin Ripley and the attempted murder of Mary Day.
Ω What? WTFFF?!?! Phhh. So cheap & stupid. The whole meaning is sacrificed in the plot favor.

& Alice: Wotcher.
Ω Alice!!

& Alice: If you’re going to go on the run you’re going to have to, er, lose the coat.
    Luther: It’s my lucky coat.
Alice: Lucky?! Right. Well, I would take it back to the shop, if I was you. Get your money back. It’s obviously defective.

& Alice: You assert this fabulous moral conscience, John. This adherence to unwritten law. Yet, time and again, it devastates the people you claim to hold dear, but you don’t stop. It seems to me your conscience has killed more people than I have.

& Alice: Some little girls grow up wanting ponies. I always wanted to be a widow.

& Alice: In principle, I pity her. She’s not what you want. She’s what you want to want.
Luther: What is it I want exactly?
Alice: We’re not talking about that.

& Alice: So what’s the plan, Stan?

& Luther: First step. You’re Thomas Marwood. You want to kill the man that killed your wife. But Milan Knizac is in prison. So how would you do it?
Alice: With leverage. Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and... I can move the world.

& Alice: I’m as guilty as sin. Name it, I’ve done it. But... John’s as innocent as I am culpable. So I suppose the question I’m here to ask is which matters more? Punishing my guilt?.. Or proving John’s innocence?

& Luther: Alice, Mary and I...
Alice: Oh, do be serious. You’ll be bored silly by the end of the week.
    Luther: You and I are...
    Alice: What?
    Luther: Well...

& Mary: What’s that?
Alice: Proof you shouldn’t need of the kind of man John Luther actually is. When Stark and the lesbian get back, you show them this. Oh, and if you ever betray him like this again... I’ll kill you and eat you. How does that sound?

& Alice: So I’ve got bullets, but no gun. That’s quite Zen.

& Marwood: It’s ugly, isn’t it? Being impotent. Being degraded by a violent man that you’ll never get to punish.

& Alice: Sorry, couldn’t resist.

& Alice: You really do need to lose the coat.
Ω That’s it. No more Luther. :^\

& Alice: So... now what?
Ω It'll be a completely different story.

& Mary: You’ve erm, still got love in your voice.
Luther: Well, you don’t stop loving someone, do you?.. Is that a problem?
Mary: It’s um, it’s the opposite of a problem.

& Ripley: Nice to meet you Mary, briefly.

& Luther: So what’s up with the website?.. Can’t we just pull it down or trace it to the source or whatever you do with websites?
Schenk: Apparently not. It’s being hosted from Uzbekistan. Or Kazakhstan. One of the Stans, anyway.

& Luther: Justin, I think it’s time you moved on, mate. I mean, you should be doing my job. Having little Ripleys of your own.

& Ripley: Caitlin dies, he’s depressed, spends a bit of time in hospital. Then, all of a sudden — boom! He’s energized. Joins a gun club. Takes lessons in Krav Maga. Urban survival courses. It’s like he’s in training for the zombie apocalypse.

& Luther: You need to keep away from Mary. She’s off limits.
Stark: But what’s the point of knowing your weak spot if I don’t get a chance to... poke it a bit?

& Stark: You know your problem? You’ve spent your life thinking you’re the whirlwind. Well, you’re not. Because I’m the whirlwind, John. I’m the whirlwind.

& Tom Marwood: Two days. Give me two days, that’s all I need.
    Luther: For what?
    Marwood: To make things better.
Luther: You know I can’t do that, Tom.
Marwood: Yes you can... if you chose to.

& Ripley: So what is this, like a Derren Brown thing?
    Gray: ???
Ripley: Mind reader. Mentalist. Reads minds.

& Ripley: Do you want to talk about this properly?
    Gray: That’s why I’m here.
Ripley: No, I mean, properly. As actual human beings. A drink or something?

& Luther: This got my numbers on it?
Ripley: All six of them, yeah.
Luther: Who needs more than six numbers?

& Ripley: I had a visitor. Erin Grey.
Luther: Oh, yeah? She have problems parking her broomstick?

& Ripley: Bit of a tabloid nightmare. Went on to self-publish poems and essays about “inter-generational love.” Sees himself as a champion of freedom, ungoverned by religion or law.
Luther: Yeah, I’ve heard that one before. Lack of conscience dressed up as philosophy.

& Schenk: Do you understand social networking?
    Luther: No.
Schenk: Good. Then, I’m not alone.

& Luther: There’s nothing more potent than private pain made public.

& Benny: What am I looking for exactly?
Luther: Well, whenever you get that feeling that you know something’s quit not right, but you’re not sure what it is, look for that.

& Stark: “The first principle is that you must not fool yourself. And you are the easiest person to fool... Richard Feynman.” Meep! Meep!

& William Carney: If you can’t get steak, you have to settle for hamburger. Never quite as satisfying, though. Less tender cuts of meat.

& Luther: Well, go on... Say something.

& Gray: What are you doing, John?
    Luther: It’s DCI Luther, actually.

& Luther: You can continue if you want. Chase me down. But if you take me down... I’ll take you down even faster and even harder.

& Martin: I know you wouldn’t have done this if you believed there was the least chance of it coming back on you. Well, guess what? It’s come back on you like the hand of God! And the next words from your mouth will determine the weight and velocity* of the staggering* tonnage of shit that’s about to plummet* onto your head.

& Luther: What do we fear the most? The unknown... The loss of a loved one. Who do we love the most? Who do we protect? Who do we shield from all the evils of the world? Who do we... lie to, leave them terrified in the dark? Who do we tell that there is no such thing as the bogeyman?..

& Martin: If I had my way, you’d be given a medal. You did outstanding work.
Luther: So did you. I like the thing about the micro-expression. Corner of the mouth. Was that a lie?
Martin: Same lie I’ve been telling since 1986. Never fails!

& Alice: What’s this?
    Luther: It’s my dad’s gun.
    Alice: You don’t like guns.
    Luther: No, I don’t.
Alice: And there’s only one bullet. What have you been playing at?

& Luther: Alice... you shouldn’t have come here. They’ll find you.
Alice: Well, they can try. But they’re Wile E Coyote. And I’m the Roadrunner. Meep-meep.

& Luther: Where will you go?
Alice: I thought I’d start with Mexico. Then there’s Marrakech. Monte Carlo... Ah, and that’s just some of the Ms... There’s an entire alphabet to work through. Come with me.
    Luther: I can’t.
    Alice: Why not?
Luther: Because I am who I am. And you are who you are.
Alice: Which is exactly why I’m asking. We’d have so much fun.
Luther: That’s what I’m scared of.
Alice: Come on. Yin and Yang. Bonnie and Clyde. Bert and Ernie.

& Alice: Now what?
Martin: I’d like to run through it one more time, if I may. Who is this?
    Alice: That’s John.
    Martin: John?
    Alice: Luther.
Martin: And who is John Luther?
    Alice: My friend.

& Alice: You’re not going to penalise John for my misdeeds... are you?
    Martin: No, Miss Morgan.
Alice: Is he still a police officer?
Martin: Yes, he’s one of ours.

& Martin: If I was your adversary* then... I’m not your adversary now. I have a new job to do, and part of that job is to police you and to do that properly, I need your trust... and your candour*. No secrets. No agendas... And no Alice Morgan.
    Luther: No secrets. No agendas.

& Justin: How long have you and DCI Luther known one another?
Caroline: Since my husband accidentally killed a prostitute.

& DS Gray: What about working for His Satanic Majesty?
    Justin: Sorry, who?
Gray: Luther. Is he really as dirty as they say?
    Justin: Who?
    Gray: They!

& Justin: Where are you going?
    Luther: To hospital.

& Alice: You seeing anyone?
    Luther: None of your business.
Alice: Because I’m not. Most of the people in here are women. Not that I mind per se. Needs must. But they do tend to veer* on the mentally ill. Child abuse, spouse abuse, alcohol abuse. It’s all just breathtakingly unerotic.

& Luther: Benny, have you got that address?
Benny: Surely do. Question is, do you want it?
    Luther: Give it to me.

& Guard: Can I help you?
Luther: Yeah. You can shut up.

Luther 1x6

& Luther: I am coming for you. All I have to do is stay free long enough to see you dead. And I’ll do that, Ian. I’ll see you dead.

& Luther: Zoe’s dead.
    Alice: Are we speaking figuratively?

& Alice: Did you kill her?
    Luther: Would it matter?
    Alice: To me?

& Alice: Why are you here?
Luther: I just need a safe place to think.
Alice: You know, in 1988, two psychologists published an article arguing that “positive self-deception” is a normal and advantageous part of most people’s lives. It turns out, people lie to themselves about three things. They view themselves in implausibly positive ways, they think they have far more control over their lives than they actually do, and they believe the future will be better than the evidence of the present can possibly justify.
But you’re way beyond that now. You’re on the other side of that particular mirror.

& Alice: They’ll know it’s you. You’re not an easy man to disguise*.
    Luther: That’s not the point.
    Alice: Well, what is?
Luther: Deniability. Look, if we get caught...
Alice: I say you forced me to help. You threatened my life.
Luther: You’re not even joking, are you?
    Alice: Absolutely not.

& Luther: Why did you do it?
    Alice: Do what?
    Luther: Your parents.
    Alice: Because I wanted to.
Luther: How could you want that?
Alice: Well, let’s put Ian Reed in a room with you and then talk about who wants what.

& Ian: I can’t stand it. I think I’m going mad. Honestly, mate. I can’t stand it...
Luther: That’s not going to stop me coming for you.
Ian: Look, I can’t undo it. All right? I wish I could. Hand to God... if I could go back, Ian: I’d rather it was me that was dead.
    Luther: That can be arranged...

& Rose: Do you know what you’ve done?
    Justin: Yes, I do, ma’am.
    Rose: Don’t “ma’am” me.

& Martin: I suppose all things are possible, although not equally.

& Ian: If I was you, I’d have killed me.
Luther: Nothing I’d like to do more.
Ian: Do it, come on. I’ve come so far, I don’t even care. You know this is the end for me.
    Luther: No.
    Ian: Why not?
Luther: Because I choose not to.

& Ian: Are you?
Alice: Yeah. He swore he wasn’t going to kill you. He thought the humiliation of prison would be worse. The beatings, the rapes, the incessant fear for your life, but I told him, “No, John, you’re wrong. Dying would be worse.” Because well, honestly, it is, isn’t it? Dying’s just worse.

& Luther: Now what?
{ __ Yeah. Exactly. Now what, Luther? Now what, Alice? We’ll see. And soon. And this’s goood. }

Luther 1x5

& Luther: This is such an interesting place. John Milton was buried here. You know Paradise Lost?
Alice: Hm, very well. He wrote it to “Justify the ways of God to men.” But even he couldn’t do that. God emerged as a tyrant. Satan as a hero. Where is this leading?

& Alice: “The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven.” The universe isn’t evil, John. It’s just indifferent. That hasn’t changed. It can’t. But what I did for you proved something to me. Something I hadn’t... believed until that moment. What? It’s you who’s right. There is love in the world.

& Luther: Excuse me, no time to this bullshit.

& Luther: Do you have any sexual fantasies?
Ripley: What? Yeah, none that I’m going to tell you about.
Luther: Does the reality ever live up to the fantasy?

& Ripley: What’s all this?
Luther: Decoupage. The cut-up technique. Take a bit of text, cut it up, randomise it, make new text. See new patterns.
    Ripley: Where’d you learn this?
Luther: David Bowie. It’s how he wrote his lyrics.
    Ripley: You a fan?
    Luther: Don’t I look like a fan?
Ripley: What of songs about like aliens and that?
Luther: No there’s a bit more to him than aliens. I’ll make you a tape.

& Luther: Madsen had a permanent guard.
Martin: Who was directed away from his post by some doctor.
    Luther: What doctor?
Martin: Well, quite. Young, very pretty, dark-haired and heterochromatic.
    Luther: Heterowhat? I’m sorry?
Martin: Different coloured eyes. Like David Bowie.

& Martin: But the timing you see, the timing, it... it chafes* my brain. Why now? Why today... the day after he wakes up?
Luther: I don’t know, Martin. We’ll just have to put that down to a big... mystery.

& Luther: Do you know, what you’ve done?
Alice: Given you back your wife. Saved your job. Saved you from disgrace and imprisonment.
    Luther: No, you’ve committed murder.
Alice: All I did was finish the job you started. What are you going to do, arrest me?

& Luther: Get him in his weak spot... What’s that?
Rose: The wife. Always the wife.

& Rose: You want to know the real tragedy about marriage?
    Luther: No, thanks.
Rose: Women always think men will change, but they don’t. Men think women won’t change but they do.

& Mark: You should make a list of the reasons why you married him. And then make another list of the reasons why you left him. And then see if the two lists don’t overlap.

Luther 1x3

& Lucien Burgess: Before I go on, I might ask if there’s anyone else at home? Anyone who might, um, be able to help?..

& Ex-copper Richard Henley: I wanted to kill him. I knew it would cost me. But I didn’t care. And to this day, the biggest regret of my life is not killing the... Any idea what it’s like to feel like that?
Luther: Yes, I do. I know exactly what that feels like.

& Luther: Benny, I appreciate you coming in.
Benny: That’s OK. I was just immersed in the world of, er, King Crimson and The World of Warcraft.
Luther: Er, as much as I love you, I can’t pretend to know what that is.
Benny: What I’m trying to say is; do I smell like someone who’s been smoking marijuana?

& Luther: Alice, do me a favour. Stop interfering! All right, please, no more helping, can you do that?

& Alice: How do I know you’re not playing a double game? One stone, multiple birds... Trying to make me speak carelessly in order to entrap me...
Luther: That would be illegal. Plus I really need to catch this man.
Alice: More than you want to catch me?
    Luther: At the moment, yeah.
Alice: Because if I thought you were about to lose interest in me... I’d be inconsolable*.

& Alice: This man Burgess, he’s just a naughty child showing off. You already know his flaw — his compulsion to dominate, to be in control. And you already know how to exploit that.
    Luther: How? Oh, come on!
Alice: Change the state of play.
Luther: Yeah, well, I tried that with you... and it failed.
    Alice: Only just.

& Ripley: All right, so what do we do?
Luther: Forget the rule book. Change the state of play.

& Ripley: This is about the law, not retribution*.
Luther: I’m not asking for your approval, son. Just your silence.
Ripley: I won’t volunteer any information, but I won’t lie for you, either. What you’re doing is wrong.
    Luther: Yeah, I know.
    Ripley: Why do it then?
    Luther: Cos it’s right.

& Martin Schenk: Detective Chief Inspector Luther. You pass like night, from land to land.
Luther: I do. I really do.
Schenk: There’s a coffee shop not far away, shall we?
    Luther: Yeah, let’s.

& Mark: Why? Why?
    Alice: I couldn’t help myself.
Mark: I don’t believe that. See, I don’t think you, of all people, ever do anything unless you decide to do it.
Alice: No, it’s true. I’m a bit like that. A bit random. Slightly kooky*.
    Mark: Kooky?
    Alice: Absolutely.

& Alice: I’m here because, this has gone just far enough and what I need you to do now is pick up that phone and withdraw the complaint.
Mark: And if I refuse? What if somebody actually stood up to you and refused?
Alice: Well, then. I’d have to leave... And then one night... I’d have to come back.

& Schenk: Apparently, Mr. North no longer seems to believe that the street robbers knew his name, or yours, indeed. Witness memory, funny old thing.

& Benny: Beware of geeks bearing gifts.

& Luther: I think, in your own way, your intentions were good. But hurting Mark doesn’t bring Zoe back to me. That’s not how people work. That’s not how they think.
    Alice: I’ll see you soon.

Luther 1x2

& Luther: Alice, you may be very, very clever. But you’re wrong. There is love in the world. So you lose.

& Reed: You might want to try answering your phone.
Luther: Get a reputation for answering phones and all they do is ring.

& Reed: So how about we finish this chat away from the edge?
Luther: D’you never do this?.. Come up to a really high place and wonder what it would be like just to fall?
    Reed: Fall or jump?
    Luther: Same thing.
Reed: I beg to differ. But, mostly I go home, watch America’s Next Top Model.
Luther: Don’t you worry you’re on the devil’s side without even knowing it?
Reed: No. Just let it go, John.
Luther: I already let him go. Just didn’t finish the job off properly, did I?
Reed: And nobody shed a tear.
Luther: That doesn’t make it right.
Reed: Makes it a little bit less wrong, though.

& Luther: Morning, Corinne.
Corinne: Any suspects, John? Off the record? ... You’ve got my number!
Luther: Yeah memorised. Six, six, six.
    Corinne: Direct line.

& Luther: Two schoolgirls are coming home from Sunday school one day and one turns to the other and says, “Do you believe in the devil?” The other one says, “Don’t be silly, of course not. The devil’s like Santa. It’s only your dad.” Ha-ha-ha. ... I always thought that was funny.

& Teller: Is any of this even true?
    Reed: Not even slightly.

& Zoe: Alice Morgan...
    Alice: A friend of John’s.

& Alice: Why does he put himself through it? What do you think compels* him to do it?
Zoe: He believes one life is all we have... Life and love. Whoever takes life steals everything.
    Alice: And do you agree?
Zoe: I don’t know. I think if he’s read a different book by a different writer, he’d have been a different man. He’d have been happier as a priest than...
    Alice: Than what?
    Zoe: Than what he is.
Alice: It must have been difficult for you. Impossible, really. How does anyone compete with a calling like that?..

& Luther: I need you to leave her alone.
    Alice: Brownie’s honour.

& Luther: One coffee doesn’t make us friends.
